Ja'rod

Ja'Rod was a villainous Klingon first mentioned in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Sins of the Father.

In the 2340s he was the head of the House of Duras. Upon assuming leadership of the House he had considered changing the House name to House of Ja'rod but decided against it as his son Duras would likely change it back to the House of Duras when he took charge. His House had been rivals to the House of Mogh for generations. Ja'rod was considered to be the House of Mogh's leader Mogh's greatest rival.

By the 2340s Ja'rod was already in league with the Romulans. It was not long before other Klingons began to suspect that someone had betrayed the Empire to the Romulans, and Mogh was assigned a mission by Imperial Intelligence to track the traitor down. Realizing the traitor was someone assigned to the Khitomer Outpost Mogh traveled to Khitomer with his wife Kassin and son Worf. Their younger son Kurn was left behind in the care of Mogh's friend Lorgh in order to ensure the survival of the House of Mogh if the worst happened.

When the Romulan Empire launched an attack on Khitomer, Ja'rod transmitted the outpost's codes to the approaching Romulan fleet, who then lowered the shields and began an orbital bombardment of the outpost. Kassin discovered that Ja'rod had betrayed his fellow Klingons and shot him dead. Worf wound up being one of the few survivors, and was adopted by a human Starfleet officer after being convinced that Ja'rod's friends would target Worf if he remained in the Empire.

In 2367 the Klingons managed to capture a Romulan vessel that contained evidence regarding the Romulan attack on Khitomer. The data on the ship included Ja'rod's codes which had enabled the Romulans to lower the outpost shields and kill approximately 4,000 Klingons. Believing that to reveal the truth and require Ja'rod's family to face the music under Klingon law would split the council and cause a civil war, the High Council decided to alter the records and blame Mogh for the attack. What they did not count on was that Worf would hear of this in the Federation and come back to defend his family honor. After realizing what was going on, Worf chose discommendation to stay alive, and kept Kurn's true bloodlines hidden until the time was right.

The truth eventually did come out after Duras died in disgrace, and Ja'rod's daughters failed in their attempt to take over the Empire. Knowing that Ja'rod and his family worked with Romulans to take over the Klingon Empire caused many Klingons to revile the name of Ja'rod and his family.

Trivia

Ja'rod never appeared on screen. The image of Ja'rod used in the Star Trek Customizable Card Game was a composite of the images of his children that was created in Photoshop.
