Sandora

Sandora (サンドラ) is a boss character from Cannon Dancer, serving as the first boss in Stage 3.

Sandora is a large creature that lives in the blazing desert of Cabil. It's a monstrous animal with a body covered in a hard brown exoskeleton with black markings and two clawed extremities, somewhat resembling a crustacean. It has a long neck ended in an elongated head with three small green eyes, and a big mouth covered in sharp teeth. As the area it inhabits in the desert is strewn with human skeletons and skulls, it appears prisoners of the Federation are left here to be executed, devoured by the roaming monster.

After being betrayed by Jack Layzon, Kirin ends up in this place to be executed, chained to a rock as Sandora approaches. Sandora starts by devouring a small Scorpion on top of the rock Kirin is chained to, but before it can proceed to eat Kirin, he breaks free and quickly takes the offensive, eliminating the monster.

Information

Sandora is a very simple boss, as it only lunges forward at Kirin in an attempt to eat him. Sandora extends its head forward and tries to coup Kirin with its jaws, then retreats back and repeats. It can alter the angle of its lunge attack to pursue Kirin if he's crouching down or jumping up, but otherwise Sandora doesn't do anything else or moves away from its position. It's weak point is its head. A good strategy is to bait Sandora into attacking high and proceed to strike at its head while it is lunging at nothing.

Besides Sandora, the other hazard to watch out for are the desert worms constantly appearing from behind it. Worms come crawling from the right side and lunge toward Kirin very quickly, although they don't track Kirin's position. There are two ways worms attack: The first way is to come crawling from behind Sandora until reaching the center of the screen, after which they shake for a moment before shooting forward like an arrow. In the second way they come from high above, bounce up at the center and then shoot forward at mid-height. The first type can be either jumped over or killed mid-flight with little issue, while the second can only hit Kirin if he's at the peak of a jump. As they spawn constantly, they can become a nuisance to dodge, specially while also keeping an eye on Sandora's attacks.
