Fake, also known as Fake Kirin (偽麒麟) or Doppelganger (ドッペルゲンガー)[1], is a boss character in Cannon Dancer, faced as part of the boss rush during the final stage.
Fake is a supernatural copy of Kirin created by Slaver from his reflection as another obstacle to protect herself after feeling Kirin's murderous intent against her. Fake appears as an identical copy of a full-powered (black pants) Kirin except for having a darker, grayish skin tone and a green sash. Fake fights by performing some of Kirin's kick-based basic attacks in their full-powered plasma-extended form, but he doesn't use Kirin's other skills such as the Slide, shadow clones or Fatal Attack.
Fake appears after Kirin has defeated Gamran in Saskiraf. Kirin runs into a reflective mirror-like surface at the top of the area, flanked by the statue from Herio's garden. By Slaver's power, the reflection comes to life and jumps out of the mirror to attack Kirin, but he is finally destroyed.
Information
Fake fights using a few basic attacks in a repeating pattern that's fast and chaotic enough to caught people off guard at first. Starting the battle, Fake will jump constantly on the area, back and forth, while performing the first two attacks in Kirin's Aerial Chain. The first kick is done when Fake is on the low end of the jump, and always comes with the extended crescent arc of plasma, while the second kick is done at the apex of the jump, and comes without extension. Fake will most of the time jump back and forth in an arc, but sometimes he can also jump straight up as well. Besides this, every so often Fake stops jumping, standing on the ground to perform several plasma-enhanced roundhouse kicks forward at Kirin's position.
In general, it is best to keep a safe distance and strike at Fake when he's at the cusp of a jump, when his attack is weakest. As he's constantly jumping around, the air throw is also a viable option, although difficult to land without getting hit from one of Fake's kicks. The sliding throw is also usable, most effectively if timed as Fake touches ground from a jump. An effective strategy is to use the shadow clones (if available) and throw moves to trap him in a loop.
Attacks
- Aerial Kicks: Fake performs the first two strikes of Kirin's aerial chain combo. He does the reverse heel strike as he jumps up, often times coming out close to the ground as a result. The attack includes the large crescent-shaped plasma arc, so its reach is quite big. Fake then performs the rotating kick at the apex of the jump. The attacks doesn't include the plasma arc, so its shorter range makes this the best moment to start a counter-attack.
- Roundhouse Kicks: Fake stops jumping around, stands idle on one spot as he performs several plasma-enhanced Roundhouse Kicks. Fake performs a random number of kicks in succession in front of him before resuming his jumping. The kicks' range is quite large in front of him, but the move is only effective if Kirin is standing idle on the ground. It's best to avoid it and await for Fake to start moving again.
Trivia
- This boss is similar to the appearance of the boss-version of Hien in Strider 2 when playing in Hien Mode, as both appear using the same sprite as the originals except with black clothes and a darker skin tone.
