- "I say we fight!"
- ―Raddus
Admiral Raddus was a Mon Calamari male from the planet Mon Cala. He was an officer in the Mon Cala planetary defense services, commanding those forces during the 18 BBY Imperial invasion of Mon Cala and eventually evacuating many city ships to evade the Empire. He became one of the first Mon Calamari to join the growing Rebel Alliance, soon commanding its fleet as part of High Command. In 1 BBY, Raddus was involved in Operation Fracture, an intelligence mission that intended to gather information about a suspected Imperial weapon. The operation revealed that the weapon was a planet-killing battle station called the Death Star, and rebel Jyn Erso testified to the Alliance that her father, Imperial scientist Galen Erso, had built a weakness into the superweapon for the rebels to exploit.
Alliance High Command, much to Raddus's chagrin, deemed that a mission to retrieve the Death Star plans would be too dangerous to approve. Jyn, however, took a band of rebels calling themselves "Rogue One" and assaulted the security complex on the planet Scarif where the plans were kept anyway. When Raddus heard of this development, he prepped his flagship, the Profundity, to join her. This prompted the rest of the fleet to be approved for deployment, and when they arrived, Raddus ordered Blue Squadron to reinforce Rogue One on the ground, with the rest of the starfighters defending the fleet and engaging the Star Destroyers.
Under Raddus's leadership, the Alliance's hodgepodge fleet was effective at battling the destroyers and TIE fighters. The admiral was able to disable one of the Star Destroyers, so when Rogue One pilot Bodhi Rook contacted the Profundity to explain that they needed Scarif's now-closed shield gate to be broken open in order to transmit the plans, Raddus could shove the disabled ship into a second, destroying them both along with the gate when they fell toward the planet. Erso successfully transmitted the plans to the Profundity but was killed by the Death Star itself, and just as the fleet began to jump away to hyperspace, Sith Lord Darth Vader arrived in his Star Destroyer Devastator, disabling Raddus's ship and killing him and everyone on board.
Biography
Defending Mon Cala
Battle of Dac City
- Telvar: "We are on the same side, after all."
- Raddus: "The giant battleship you parked in orbit around our planet suggests otherwise."
- Lee-Char: "Enough, Raddus."
- ―Mon Cala trade negotiations[6]
Raddus was a Mon Calamari male[4] born around 66 BBY[2] in the waterworld of Mon Cala's northern colder polar regions. He served as the long-standing mayor of the city Nystullum in Mon Cala's north[5] as part of its government[7] and as an admiral in[8] the monarchy's[6] Mon Cala planetary defense services,[8] advising King of Mon Cala Lee-Char and working with defense commander Gial Ackbar.[5] Two of his aides in Nystullum were Shollan and Caitken, who served with him on the defense staff.[1] A senior member of the defense services, he was often present at court.[10] At some point, he was awarded a civic crest for planetary defense.[11]

In 18 BBY,[12] the Galactic Empire sent Ambassador Telvar to Mon Cala to ostensibly negotiate a trade deal with Lee-Char. Telvar tried to make it seem like they were all on the same side, though Lee-Char was unconvinced that the deal would benefit anyone but the Empire. Raddus, who was in attendance at the meeting, retorted that the Imperial-class Star Destroyer orbiting the planet did not imply partnership. After Telvar had left, Lee-Char was concerned that the meeting had not gone well, with which Raddus agreed, harshly criticizing Telvar and the Empire and suggesting they secede right then. Lee-Char maintained that such a decision went beyond Mon Cala, referencing his Jedi advisor, Ferren Barr. Before Raddus could respond, an Imperial shuttle flew in overhead.[6]
Ackbar went to greet the shuttle, which carried Sith Lord Darth Vader and several Inquisitors. As[6] he[13] questioned their authority to be there, Telvar's shuttle exploded, leading the Empire to quickly give up their diplomatic efforts.[6] Ground forces galore were deployed, and though the Mon Calamari fought back, the Dac City landing platform soon fell to Imperial forces. Raddus, Lee-Char, Ackbar, and other Mon Calamari and Quarren met to discuss how to repel the attacks, as all aboveground settlements were sustaining assaults. Lee-Char had ordered all residents to evacuate underwater, which Raddus saw as a surrender of sorts, but Lee-Char felt it was strategic to preserve as much life as possible.[14]
As the others left to command planetary defense, Lee-Char tried to reason with the Empire's Governor Wilhuff Tarkin. The governor gave no room and advised the Mon Calamari to surrender at once. After the call, Lee-Char told Ackbar and Raddus via hologram to give up defending the surface and to enact his non-diplomacy plan. Just as Vader and the Inquisitors reached the king and began to interrogate him about a Jedi on Mon Cala, aquatic creatures sprung up from the oceans, destroying the settlements and sending Imperial forces into the waters.[14]
Under attack, underwater
- "Better than sitting here waiting to die. Some of us might make it through. We can return another day to liberate our home."
- ―Raddus
Raddus headed resistance efforts in the south while keeping Mon Calamari reefships in the polar regions. Tarkin warned Colonel Bergon not to underestimate Raddus's tactical skills.[13] Indeed, Raddus repurposed the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet to be a fortress in which his forces could be protected, thanks to the fleet's powerful deflector shields. The shields held strong, which Raddus had expected, and he admitted to a commander that he hoped, to a certain extent, that the Imperials did not give up their attack and kept engaging with the Mon Calamari.[8]

However, the Star Destroyers above began an orbital bombardment of Mon Cala, quickly destroying five cities in the north. Raddus surmised that the planet's curve would buy them some time as they were in the south, but he knew that once the Empire reached them, their shields would eventually give. He instructed his forces to continue fighting until he signaled for the cruisers to scatter. Meanwhile, Lee-Char had come to the conclusion that since Barr had initiated the violence by assassinating Telvar, if he ordered a ceasefire, the Imperials would respect it. Raddus was shocked when he heard the command to stand down, but Tarkin continued the bombardment without mercy.[8]
Raddus decided to take matters into his own hands, ordering all cruisers to launch even with the understanding that some would not make it past the Imperial blockade. He hoped that a people of the sea could perhaps also fare in space.[15] Raddus, one of the first to join the Rebel Alliance,[16] quickly[5] led the city ships, or MC-series star cruisers, to join them. The Alliance's leader, Senator Mon Mothma, noted in a file titled "Short Notes on the History of the Rebel Alliance Navy" that their arrival had been a "shocking boon" and perhaps undeserved as the rebels had been relatively unsuccessful in resisting the occupation of Mon Cala,[17] though the planet's resistance had strengthened the rebels.[16]
Fish of the fleet
- "My aides Caitken and Shollan have assembled this on my behalf. Know this: we are scraping by on smaller vessels until we get the heavy hitters online. The Alliance is not yet ready for a fleet engagement against the Empire."
- ―Raddus, in a report to Mon Mothma
Becoming an officer for the Alliance, Raddus advocated for smaller hit-and-run attacks on the Empire and then disappearing, moving from base to base to detract attention.[16] Mothma considered Raddus to be the Alliance's most important military officer.[19] Sometime between 5 BBY and 4 BBY,[20] rebel general Davits Draven sent a report to Mothma concerning other rebel factions[18]—he[1] noted that while Raddus and his bloc had joined the larger Alliance, other Mon Cals, commanded by Faa-Char, were still acting on their own. Draven argued that Raddus's actions had branded all Mon Calamari as traitors in the eyes of the Empire.[18]

Between 4 BBY and 3 BBY,[21] Raddus sent an assessment compiled by Shollan and Caitken of the fledgling Rebel Alliance Navy, which at that point was primarily comprised of Braha'tok-class gunships, Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvettes, Alderaanian cruisers, Pelta-class frigates, and GR-75 medium transports. Raddus gauged that without larger, heavy-hitting vessels, the fleet was not ready for a major engagement with the Empire.[18] He made regular reports on the fleet's status.[19]
By 2 BBY,[22] Raddus was the fleet commander of the navy, with Colonel Anj Zavor as his liaison.[18] At some point, he questioned a rebel-aligned individual of their loyalties.[23] He was part of Alliance High Command when Mothma resigned from the Imperial Senate and officially brought rebel factions together—she acknowledged in a journal entry that views like Raddus's, which necessarily involved fighting, clashed with those such as Senator Tynnra Pamlo, who advocated for working within the Imperial system to find peace.[18] Ackbar also joined the Alliance, clashing his methodical style with Raddus's aggressive strategy.[24] By 1 BBY,[25] Raddus had dozens of grandchildren.[17]
Planet killer
Interesting intelligence
- "If she's telling the truth, we need to act now!"
- ―Raddus
The Profundity, the former civic governance tower of Nystullum, acted as Raddus's flagship, one of the first such vessels converted for war. In his role as fleet commander, Raddus was not often present in the rebel bases on the moon Yavin 4[1] or the planet[26] Dantooine[5] as he was mainly stationed in the Telaris system,[27] though he did sometimes come when High Command required him there[1] and also joined via hologram.[7] He was also part of the Rebel Council that made up the oversight committee for Operation Fracture[17] in 1 BBY,[3] which hoped to extract Imperial scientist Galen Erso so he could testify to the Senate regarding a weapon the rebels suspected the Empire was creating. As the operation progressed, Raddus communicated to Mothma that a U-wing extraction was probable and that Blue Squadron, Red Squadron, and Green Squadron were ready to be deployed, as was a slightly depleted Gold Squadron. He felt that the navy could provide whatever support Fracture and its leader, Captain Cassion Andor, required.[28]

Sometime later, Mothma received intelligence that the weapon, which they suspected to be a "planet killer," was at the moon Jedha—this concerned Raddus, who offered to move a long-range cargo freighter to the mission if needed.[17] Indeed, Andor shortly after sent a message to the Yavin base informing them that the Holy City on Jedha had been destroyed and updated them on Erso's location. Blue Squadron ended up joining Andor's mission, meeting up with him at the planet Eadu and assassinating Erso. Andor soon returned to Yavin, bringing with him Jyn Erso, the daughter of Galen, who testified to the Rebellion about her rebel history and her father.[9]
During the debriefing, Raddus asked her about her involvement with the extremist rebel Saw Gerrera, which she was able to answer to the admiral's satisfaction.[17] When the discussion reached the weapon, whose power was now known thanks to Jedha and whose name was revealed to be "the Death Star," some Alliance leaders voiced that surrender was the only option in the face of such a threat. Raddus, on the other hand, proclaimed the need for swift action if Jyn, who claimed that her father built a fatal weakness into the weapon, was telling the truth[9]—that "if" was hard for her to hear as she had thought he supported her.[17] Jyn then gave a speech proposing that the Rebellion stage a raid on the planet Scarif, where the Death Star plans were held. While Raddus and some others supported her drive to fight, most of Alliance High Command was against the idea.[9] Instead of fighting, the Profundity was set to escort the under-maintenance cruiser Tantive IV to the planet Tatooine so that Princess Leia Organa could recruit exiled Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi.[27]
Raddus the Rogue Rebel
- "Red and Gold Squadrons, attack formations. Defend the fleet. Blue Squadron, get to the surface before they close that gate."
- ―Raddus
Soon after, a rebel soldier frantically informed Raddus that Jyn Erso and many others had commandeered a stolen Zeta-class Heavy Cargo Shuttle. Raddus surmised that they were heading to Scarif to steal the Death Star plans and ordered that the Profundity be prepared for departure, inspired by the belief in the Rebellion that the group, calling themselves "Rogue One," maintained.[29] Once Mothma heard of Raddus's decision, she knew there was no stopping him after all that Mon Cala had been through.[30] The fleet was quickly scrambled, with Raddus having already contacted all capital ships close enough to Yavin and Scarif.[17] He communicated to Mothma a summary of the various forces he expected to have once they made it to Scarif.[18] Just before they made the jump to hyperspace, reports came in of explosions on Scarif.[29]

Raddus and Blue Leader General Antoc Merrick discussed strategy before they reached Scarif.[31] Rogue One's ground assault was well underway by the time the fleet arrived in the Scarif system. As squadron leaders reported in,[9] Raddus considered their enemy's defensive firepower and reflected on, among other reasons to fight, how little of a chance Mon Cala would have if the Death Star survived.[17] He ordered Red and Gold squadrons to assume attack formation[9] and engage the two Star Destroyers[17] and for Blue Squadron to reinforce Rogue One on the ground before the shield gate closed.[9]
Strategy at Scarif
- "What's going on down there, Lieutenant?"
"Unknown, sir. We can't raise them. All rebel frequencies are blocked."
"Keep trying. Engage those Star Destroyers and let's start probing that shield!"
"Yes, sir!" - ―Raddus and Shollan
Along with assignments for the starfighter squadrons, Raddus's strategy was for two thirds of the fleet to each support Red and Gold Squadrons and for the remaining third to defend the flank to preserve an escape route. The Profundity was to cover Blue Squadron and target the shield gate. The admiral felt that the plan, which he cobbled together based on engagements at the locations Nexator and Carsanza, was a bit simple but the best that could be done with the time constraints. He watched his holodisplays and viewport to see Hammerhead corvettes sustain Imperial fire and Blue Squadron losing a fighter as they rushed to help Rogue One.[17]

As the battle progressed, the Empire blocked all rebel frequencies, preventing the rebels from knowing what was happening on Scarif itself,[9] at which Raddus swore when he learned of it. He ordered his starfighters to hit the Star Destroyers and the shield gate hard, the latter of which had closed, in an attempt to buy Erso and her team time. Raddus was able to limit the Star Destroyers' effectiveness by hitting them from all sides, forcing them to spread their firepower.[17]
Dozens of TIE fighters joined the fighting, rocking the Profundity and damaging its shields down to fifty percent. Raddus had no intention of turning back, urging that the fleet press the attack.[9] In response, he pulled the Profundity back in order to stretch the Empire's fighters. His forces, however, were making but a dent in the shield gate as their losses abounded.[17] He had gone in merely hoping to buy Rogue One time, but now that Rogue One was trapped below, he needed a victory rather than a draw.[32] Looking for an opportunity to shift the battle's tide, Raddus noticed that he could move ships to distract the Star Destroyer Persecutor. This opened a lane for Gold Squadron to fully immobilize the destroyer, after which Raddus redirected his forces to continue berating the other destroyer, the Intimidator, along with the shield gate.[17]
Plans and plight
- "Rogue One, may the Force be with you. All ships, prepare for jump to hyperspace."
- ―Raddus
When Rogue One pilot Bodhi Rook called from below that destroying the shield gate was vital to transmitting the plans, Raddus had an idea: he called up the Hammerhead corvette Lightmaker to shove the Persecutor into the Intimidator,[9] at which the Lightmaker's captain, Kado Oquoné, was angered at first but then accepted as the necessary move. With a skeleton crew after evacuating nonessential personnel,[17] the corvette wrecked them both, breaking open the gate as they fell[9] and turning the momentum in the battle toward the rebels.[32] Raddus quickly moved the Profundity close to the shield opening and brought forces to defend it, knowing that they would not have long before the shield regenerated. He took a brief moment to decide that he would name his great-grandchildren after Oquoné and his crew.[17]

Soon after, the Profundity began receiving a transmission from Scarif,[9] and after confirming the data at Raddus's request,[17] Shollan announced that they had secured the plans. The Death Star itself then emerged from hyperspace and targeted the base at Scarif. Raddus wished for the Force to be with Rogue One and took a brief moment of silence before commanding all rebel ships to jump to hyperspace. Many successfully did so—however, the Profundity was incapacitated by the Star Destroyer Devastator,[9] which Raddus had recognized as Darth Vader's. He requested a damage report but knew that they had no chance of escape,[31] so he ordered the Tantive IV, which had been undergoing repairs while docked with the Profundity, to take the plans and escape,[17] giving the rebels a chance even if he would not live to see it through.[31] The Profundity was destroyed,[3] with Raddus and all his subordinates aboard perishing.[19]
Legacy
Legendary rebel
- "Ackbar lives, but Raddus is… gone. He died to ensure the destruction of a great Imperial war machine. It's a long story…"
"A great one, Raddus. We had such hopes." - ―Organa and Lee-Char

The Alliance was ultimately able to use the stolen plans to destroy the Death Star in the Battle of Yavin, before which General Jan Dodonna led analysis of the plans in Raddus's place. Admiral Gial Ackbar took over as the commander of the Alliance fleet, and Raddus came to be a rebel legend for his sacrifice,[32] inspiring others to join the Rebellion.[34] In 1 ABY,[35] Ackbar and Organa mentioned Raddus when trying to convince Grand Admiral Dors Urtya of the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet to help the Rebellion. Urtya reminded them that Raddus had died for the cause and that King Lee-Char remained in Imperial captivity, unwilling to ask all of Mon Cala to make the same sacrifice.[36] Ackbar later opined to Organa that Raddus would have been quite excited at the capabilities against the Empire held by the fleet they were building up.[37]
The rebels decided to stage a prison breakout to free Lee-Char and inspire the Mon Calamari. Upon reaching him, they discovered that he was poorly and kept alive by machinery only. He was able to speak, asking if Raddus was among the rebels' number—Organa confirmed that he had been but had died a hero, and Lee-Char acknowledged the admiral's greatness.[33]
Cruiser namesake and historical figure
- "Although the rebel fleet under Admiral Raddus had the benefit of surprise, and Raddus was a far better military commander than his adversary Admiral Gorin, an examination of the opposing forces suggests that the two Imperial Star Destroyers guarding the planet—the Intimidator and the Persecutor—should not have been fought to a standstill and then subsequently destroyed along with the shield gate."
- ―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
By 4 ABY,[39] Draven's report on rebel factions, Raddus's reports on the fleet and on Scarif forces, and Mothma's notes on rebel leaders were among the documents compiled in The Rebel Files, a collection of non-electronic records, by rebel Hendri Underholt. Thirty years later, members of the Resistance movement against the First Order, which included rebel veterans, annotated the files when they were rediscovered. Admiral Ackbar concurred with his predecessor's assessment that the rebel fleet had not been ready for a major engagement and expressed surprise at the size of Raddus's forces at Scarif, particularly as he only had one heavy battleship. Ackbar also noted that when he took over as fleet commander, the navy was severely underequipped, and he had been unprepared to take Raddus's position.[18]

In building its fleet, the Resistance acquired an MC85 Star Cruiser from the New Republic. Ackbar personally petitioned to have it be renamed the Raddus from Dawn of Tranquility in honor of the fallen admiral, hoping that they, too, could rise up against insurmountable odds.[40] Ackbar had come to better respect his colleague in the years since his falling in battle.[24]
Raddus was also mentioned in an artist's journal's section on Mon Calamari, which was restored, expanded, and displayed at the Graf Archive[41] at some point no earlier than 34 ABY.[42]
Historian Beaumont Kin later wrote about the Battle of Scarif in[38] his[7] 35 ABY[43] book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire. He argued that Raddus had been a far superior commander to the Empire's, Admiral Gorin, but that the Imperial forces still should have been able to better defend themselves from the surprise rebel attack. Drawing from both Rebel Alliance and Imperial Archives, he noted that the rebels' success had sparked weeks of discussion within the Empire.[38]
Personality and traits
- "We can't just give in!"
- ―Raddus
A pragmatic[1] and careful tactician, Raddus believed in incorporating odds and numbers into strategy, removing emotion from the equation.[16] He developed his outlook from his home oceans, whose polar cold temperatures were said to make natives' blood run thicker—Raddus enjoyed this reputation, having no interest in social pleasantries when interacting, instead acting stern, gruff, and dour in the interest of practicality.[1] He found it challenging to adjust to having non–Mon Calamari be part of the Profundity's staff.[17] Raddus avoided concerning himself with politics[44] and had no patience for diplomacy[45]—Rebel Council meetings, full of deliberation instead of action, frustrated him,[5] though he tried to remain amicable during them.[19]

Scarif was a difficult battle for Raddus to lead. Inspired by the thought of standing up to tyranny as siblings together and of saving Mon Cala, he was forced to make tough choices, including sending the Lightmaker on a one-way trip to break open the shield. As Mon Calamari had far more offspring than humans, many of whom did not live to come of age, Raddus was not as devastated at the deaths of individuals, though he anticipated that the deaths of hundreds would come to haunt him. Nonetheless, he remained calm throughout the battle and was of the opinion that a great commander should feel each loss emotionally but not let it cloud their judgment.[17]
While watching the Death Star laser destroy Rogue One, Raddus was able to keep his composure but was still quite emotional. Sacrificing everything so that the Rebel Alliance might fight on was the ultimate source of pride for Raddus, having been able to contribute his particular tactical skillset to the cause.[27] Raddus had gray skin with a dark complexion, yellow eyes, and stood 1.9 meters tall (6 feet, 3 inches). His chromatophoric skin helped him camouflage.[1]
Skills and abilities
- "I want one-third of the fleet each supporting Red and Gold Squadrons. That should force those Destroyers to engage. The remainder will protect our flank; when the Empire brings in reinforcements, I don't want our escape route cut off."
- ―Raddus explains his strategy at Scarif
Raddus's tactical prowess allowed him to redirect Imperial forces during their invasion of Mon Cala to where he needed them. He was talented at managing both ground and space engagements.[5] As an experienced and strategic leader, Raddus was effective at commanding the rebel fleet,[46] and historical analysis of Scarif found that he had far out-commanded Gorin.[38] He had earned the monikers "Raddus of Mon Cala," "Raddus of the Floes," and "Raddus of the Clutch of Zadasurr and the Spear of Tryphar" across his career.[17] Highly intelligent and strong, he was not Force-sensitive.[47]
Equipment
- "We must return to the Profundity and prepare for departure."
- ―Raddus
Raddus carried a DH-17 blaster pistol[48] along with a coded[49] waterproof datapad that contained his orders.[46] He wore a blue rebel naval uniform[50] with his civic crest affixed to a vest. He also had black shoes.[46] The Profundity served as his flagship after Raddus escaped the occupation of Mon Cala with it—it was one of the first city ships to be refitted as a war-able capital ship.[5]
Behind the scenes
Development and production
- "Raddus was described by Gareth [Edwards] as being quite old, quite large, portly, strong personality, able to command the rebels, and be a decisive voice. We felt Winston Churchill fit that bill."
- ―Creature designer Neal Scanlan
Raddus was created for the Anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,[9] released on December 16, 2016.[52] He simultaneously appeared in Alexander Freed's novelization,[17] Matt Forbeck's junior novel of the film,[31] and Jason Fry's young reader book Star Wars: Rogue One: Secret Mission,[16] all published the same day.[53] Prior to the film's release, footage of Raddus was first showcased in a reel of Rogue One footage revealed at Celebration Europe on July 15 of that year.[54] His name was first unveiled on a trading card in 2016 Topps Star Wars: Rogue One Series 1[55] on September 30.[56] In the original script, screenwriter Gary Whitta had Admiral Ackbar leading the attack on Scarif, but Raddus was created to fill the role once Ackbar appeared in[57] the 2015 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[51]

Director Gareth Edwards described Raddus as portly with a strong personality, so creature designer Neal Scanlan and his team landed on Winston Churchill,[51] the British Prime Minister during World War II.[58] Martin Rezard and Adam Brockbank produced concept art of Raddus,[59] using wartime photos of Churchill as a reference to create Raddus's jowly face. The team decided to introduce Mon Calamari with entirely different skin tones than Ackbar and others had had in the 1983 original trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi to show that Mon Calamari, like humans, came in different races. Raddus, unlike Caitken and Shollan, was also set apart from Ackbar in terms of his shape, with stronger features and bone structure. Scanlan described him as "more like a pike than he is a perch," while Ackbar had been "goldfishy."[51] Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo noted that having the grayscale Mon Cals be from colder, polar regions while having colorful skin tones be from tropical parts of Mon Cala worked with Raddus's no-nonsense attitude.[60]
Raddus was played in costume by Paul Kasey, who wore a suit and animatronic mask,[51] the latter of which was supervised by Gustav Hoegen.[59] Kasey studied Churchill's wartime speeches to get a feel for how to portray Raddus's body language.[51] He described working on Rogue One as a "complete joy," and while he could not see or hear anything while in the costume, he could communicate with puppeteer Patrick Comerford, who controlled Raddus's head during production. Comerford was able to relay direction to Kasey, who also mentioned that he enjoyed being able to get into character during shooting.[61]

A veteran voice
- "So it wasn't until I got to Disney's ADR stage and met with [supervising sound editor] Matthew Wood, who recorded me, that I found out the real name of the character, Admiral Raddus. And then he said, 'Oh, it's this Mon Calamari,' and he showed me a picture and I thought, 'That's the character I saw in the sizzle reel!' Because the sizzle reel had come out, and you had seen glimpses of things, but you didn't know who was who or what was what."
- ―Stephen Stanton

Veteran Star Wars voice actor Stephen Stanton provided Raddus's voice, combining Churchill with actor George C. Scott's interpretation of[63] US Army general George S. Patton, who also served in World War II, from the 1970 film Patton.[64] Stanton had no idea the voice was for Star Wars when he turned in his audition, only finding out when his agent informed him he got the job. Sound editor Matthew Wood showed Stanton a picture of Raddus when he went in for the first of two recording sessions, and he recognized his character from a sizzle reel that Lucasfilm had released for Rogue One.[63]
While recording his lines, Stanton worked with Wood, who showed him the footage he was recording over and explained his scenes' context. Direction came remotely from London, while Stanton, Wood, and the sound team were in Burbank, California. Recording after filming was completed, Stanton had to match his performance to the emotion and physical swaying of the Profundity in Raddus's scenes. He never saw the full script, and for Raddus's line of "Rogue One, may the Force be with you," he did it wild without matching to a shot, so seeing the end product in the theater was emotional for him once he understood the line's weight. Stanton felt it was extra special to voice a major film character, particularly a new one who, as Story Group member Matt Martin described to him, "saved the Rebellion." He also appreciated all of Rogue One's connections to the first film,[63] 1977's Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[51]
Through an extended trailer for Andor Season 2 shown exclusively at Star Wars Celebration Japan on April 18, 2025, it was revealed that Raddus would be making an appearance within the second season of Star Wars: Andor.[65] The next day on April 19, Stanton himself would publicly confirm Raddus's return through a social media post on Twitter.[66]
Inconsistencies
- "If they're attempting what I think they are, they're going to need our support."
- ―Raddus in Rogue One Adaptation 5, while on Yavin

There is a slight inconsistency across sources regarding Raddus's decision to bring the Profundity to reinforce Rogue One.[5][29] In the film itself, when Private Tenzigo Weems tells Mothma that Raddus plans to join them, he says, "He's returned to his ship. He's going to fight."[9] A number of sources, including the June 2020[67] ninetieth issue of De Agostini's Star Wars: Build Your Own X-Wing magazine,[5] the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Geektionary: The Galaxy from A - Z,[27] and the 2019 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, New Edition, describe the Profundity as already having been "en route" to Tatooine to bring Organa aboard the Tantive IV.[68]
The August 2, 2017[69] fifth issue of Marvel Comics' adaptation of the film, written by Jody Houser, explicitly depicts Raddus as having been on Yavin when he decided to go to Scarif,[29] and Rogue One's junior novel notes that Raddus was in orbit above Yavin when he departed for Scarif.[31] Furthermore, the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO are still on Yavin when Mothma is informed of Raddus's decision,[9] yet they are present in the Tantive IV in A New Hope, directly after the plans were stolen.[70] Therefore, this article aligns with the latter interpretation of Weems's line and assumes that Raddus left for Scarif from Yavin.
Rogue One's novelization depicts the Profundity receiving the plans after the Death Star has arrived in the Scarif system,[17] but in the film, its transmission is complete before the superweapon emerges from hyperspace.[9] The 2018 reference book Star Wars: Alien Archive mistakenly refers to Raddus as a general.[41]
