- "Alderaanians are about to die. It would be nice if they did so knowing their princess gives a damn. I must say something […] "
"You already know what to say, Leia. Have you even noticed that I've stopped addressing you formally? No "ma'am"? No "your highness"? I did it because you threw everything away for Tula. That reminded me of all your other sacrifices, and those made me think of your achievements." - ―Princess Leia Organa and Evaan Verlaine
A princess was a member of a noble family.[1] "Prince" was a typically masculine equivalent of "princess."
History
Princess Sicatra of Bethune and Prince Colden of Firevale were partly responsible for a bloody battle between their peoples during the High Republic Era.[5] The Jedi Rael Averross served as the lord regent of Pijal for Princess Fanry.[6] Roola was a Hutt princess who ruled the moons of Syvris before she was kidnapped by the Hutt gangster Pashda, who had been contracted by the Mon Calamari Basz.[7]
Although she was the daughter of a defrocked Jedi Knight and a senator[1] of humble origins,[8] Leia Organa became a princess following her adoption into the Royal Family of Alderaan. She was referred to by her title alongside her first name, as Princess Leia,[1] and formally addressed as "your highness" in the first instance and then as "ma'am" by those who recognized her as a princess of her own right[4]—including during her time in the Rebel Alliance after the Galactic Empire destroyed Alderaan.[9] If not for the destruction of Organa's adopted homeworld, her son Ben Solo would have been born as the Prince of Alderaan.[10]
During the Rebellion's war against the Empire, Princess Leia and fellow Alderaanian Evaan Verlaine rescued Alderaan's survivors. As the Alderaan Flotilla hid from the Empire, Princess Leia continued serving as a commander in the Rebellion but endorsed Verlaine to stand for a fair election as Alderaan's princess.[4] In later years, Organa would eschew the title of princess in favor of the role of general in the Resistance against the First Order, allowing only her close friends to use the title.[11] In fact, the title no longer carried much political weight in a New Republic determined to uphold democratic ideals.[12]
