"You are a general. I am a commander. You stand higher in military hierarchy."
Senior Captain Thrawn, undercover as a commander, to Jedi General Anakin Skywalker[29]

General was a senior rank in various armies, including the Imperial Army,[6] the Grand Army of the Republic,[2] the Separatist Droid Army,[5] the Alliance Army,[8] the Resistance Army,[11] and the First Order Army.[11] Generals were part of an army's hierarchy, as opposed to admirals, who had a high role in a navy.[6] While some nations in the Unknown Regions used the rank of general, others used the equivalent title of "generalirius."[10] Abediah Viess led a mercenary army of warrior-kin as a general.[13] The Unbroken Clan syndicate also made use of the rank,[24] as did the Troik tribe of the planet At Achrann.[28]

Gungan leader Boss Nass was so impressed with Jar Jar Binks' role in bringing the Gungan and Naboo people together that he promoted Binks to the rank of Bombad General. The clumsy Binks was one of the commanders of the Gungan Grand Army during the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo.[30] During the Clone Wars, the rank of Jedi General was bestowed on the Knights and Masters of the Jedi Order, giving them authority to lead the Galactic Republic's military forces.[31][32][33] Grievous was once a feared general of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[34] In the months following her purported death at the Battle of Jakku, Captain Ciena Ree was nominated for the Distinguished Medal of Imperial Honor by Flight Commander Nash Windrider, who explained that he had it on good authority that several Imperial generals, admirals, and captains also intended to recommend the late Ree for the same award.[9] Armitage Hux was the highest-ranking general in the forces of the First Order, subservient only to Supreme Leader Snoke and his apprentice Kylo Ren.[11] Poe Dameron promoted his friend Finn to general, after the retired general Lando Calrissian reminded that they had each other—and that was how they won.[35]
