Sonic the Hedgehog 3

In 1974, a project titled "Project Shadow" was shut down by the Guardian Units of Nations due to the danger of Shadow the Hedgehog. Considered too dangerous and an invaluable asset, Shadow was placed in cryostasis on Prison Island, located in Tokyo Bay, by then-Captain Walters. He awakened fifty years later when his cryo-pod suddenly opened thanks to Gerald Robotnik.

Shadow headed to the Japanese mainland, learning that G.U.N. has been following him after perching atop the Rainbow Bridge. Shadow descended from the bridge and raced towards Shibuya Crossing, Shibuya, where he bumped into a pedestrian that reminded him of a friendthat had passed away. Through digital billboards, Shadow learned he had been in cryo-sleep for fifty years. Before he had time to process this information, a team of armed G.U.N. soldiers and Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department officers surrounded Shadow. However, they were all easily defeated by Shadow.

After Shadow laid waste to G.U.N.'s forces and those of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's, Team Sonic was asked by GUN to assist them in taking down Shadow. They flew into Tokyo from a ring portal and later jumped out of the G.U.N. helicopter carrying them into the city. Landing on Shibuya Crossing, the group came face-to-face with Shadow, who scaled a pile of destroyed vehicles. Knuckles enthusiastically went first to battle him, but was kicked into a nearby stand.

Sonic and Tails then tried to regroup with Knuckles and take Shadow down. Shadow disposed of Sonic's teammates and lifted the latter upward, slamming him back down into the street. He afterwards hopped on a motorcycle as Sonic came to and warned the group not to follow him. Sonic recklessly went after Shadow anyway, weaving through traffic. Sonic clung onto the motorbike as Shadow avoided level crossing borders via teleportation and drove up the Tokyo Skytree. Their chaos energy-charged fists met above the Tokyo skyline, causing a brief blackout. Cuffed to the bars atop the building Sonic was freed by Tails, who suggested they regroup in the Chao Garden.

After being defeated by Shadow, Team Sonic regrouped with Commander Walters at the Chao Garden. There, Walters explained Shadow's backstory and history with GUN before he and Team Sonic were attacked by Flying Eggs. Before he passed, Walters gave Team Sonic one of the keycards to the Eclipse Cannon. Suddenly, Agent Stone in disguise managed to disable the robots before fleeing. With Team Sonic pursuing, while Director Rockwell and G.U.N. arrived at the Chao Garden and believed that Team Sonic was behind the attack.

Team Sonic then chased Agent Stone back to the Mecha Crab. There, Team Sonic discovered that Doctor Eggman was in fact still alive and now in a newly depressed and lazy state. However, Eggman soon snapped out of it when he discovered his Badniks were being used by someone else. Begrudgingly, Eggman, Stone, and Team Sonic formed an alliance with each other to seek out Shadow and the Eggman imposter. Using a Ring Portal to get to the lab Project Shadow was conducted in.
