Big Egg

The Big Egg[note 1] is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a massive mech built by Dr. Eggman which was used during the climax of Sonic Superstars.

Appearance

The Big Egg is a giant, heavily armed robot whose size stands several times larger than Sonic the Hedgehog. It is built in the image of its creator, sharing many visual parallels with the Death Egg Robot. It is mainly colored red and orange with a black underbelly. The head facial-like features are taken from Eggman's own appearance, namely: a blue mouth/teeth, a brown moustache, a red-pointed "nose", and two dark-blue visors resembling Eggman's pince-nez sunglasses. A bent gray metal piece above "Eggman's glasses" shape the mech's "horns" which bears a resemblance to the maedate on a Japanese kubuto. The mech's torso is equipped with three satellite dishes which can move freely on their own. The mech's arms have a blue hexagonal field which end in black "hands" with pointed spikes sticking out.

History

After venturing through the time-reverted Egg Fortress Zone, Dr. Eggman confronts Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Trip in the massive mech although the heroes were seemingly successful in destroying the mech. However, Eggman activates his time-reversal device, reverting its destruction and attacked the heroes once more. In the end, the mech was defeated once again by the heroes, forcing Eggman to retreat from the scene using his jetpack as his mech exploded and was destroyed.

Powers and abilities

The final boss has many built-in abilities. The cockpit is designed for the Egg Mobile to dock and interface with it. Its entire body can spin in 360 degree movements. An important form of its locomotion is to use the Rocket boosters in its feet to fly. The large spiked "hands" are designed to cause massive damage to structures, especially the catwalk-like paths that surround it. Missile launchers on its head can launch two different types of missiles: a small explosion type and a large explosion type. The horn on its head control the plasma ball emitters that come down from the ceiling. The hexagonal plates on its forearms can control gravity in the vicinity within the Egg Fortress, creating a zero-g environment when needed. The three dishes on its torso can be realigned and fire large laser blasts. Using an unknown devise, the mech can generate laser walls around itself.

Battle

The Big Egg is the boss of Egg Fortress Zone Act 2, and is the overalll 21st and final boss in the Story Mode of Sonic Superstars. It is fought by Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy or Trip.

Boss guide

After reaching the second checkpoint from Egg Fortress Act 1 and entering the room, a cutscene will play where Eggman will arrive in his Egg Mobile. He will taunt the player before flying away as the ground crumbles, leading the player(s) into the boss arena. Once inside, a cutscene will play as Eggman descends in his Big Egg.

The Big Egg uses the following attack pattern:

  • The Big Egg launches a wave of missiles into the air before landing on various points of the ground near the player. Upon contact with the ground, the red missiles explode while the blue missiles will erupt into pillars of flames. The player can jump or spin into the blue missile to launch it back at Eggman. Hitting them while the front or side of the Big Egg will result in it being deflected off the Big Egg's hands or armor (respectively). The player must continuously move until they are behind the Big Egg's rear, then hit the blue missile which will successfully damage the mech; it is the only way to damage the boss for the first phase. As the fight progresses, Eggman will only fire one blue missile per wave, giving the player less opportunities to attack. The yellow Chaos Emerald's power can be useful to give the player more time to track down the blue missile. After three waves of missiles, or after the player hits the mech, Eggman will proceed to use the next attack.
  • After the first group of missile waves, the Big Wave generates numerous laser walls surrounding mech, then extends them away from the mech after a short yellow flash. The player must find a gap to avoid taking damage from the walls. If more damage is taken, the laser walls cover a larger area where the only gaps the player can use are either narrow or are airborne, requiring the player to jump at the right time in the case of the latter.
  • Eggman repeats his missile attack from before.
  • After the second group of missile waves, Eggman smashes the platform, launching the player into the air, while the platform segments crumble for a short while. This also creates a bottomless pit which will instantly defeat the player if they fall into it. Meanwhile, plasma balls will also rain from the sky which the player must dodge. The destroyed segments of the platform will eventually respawn.

After this, the Big Egg's will encore the attack pattern. Once the Big Egg has received 6 hits, the next phase will begin. Most of the time, the Big Egg will chase the player to the right while the platform is destroyed. If the player falls into the pit where the Big Egg is at, they will be instanly defeated. The platform is also uneven as it also has raised stairs-like formations, which may trip the player as they are trying to avoid the Big Egg's attacks.

The Big Egg's attacks used in this phase are as follows:

  • While chasing the player, the Big Egg will try to smash the players with one of its hands. After a couple of times, the Big Egg will lift both of his hands before bringing them down. Provided that the player survived by going all the way to the right side of the screen, the Big Egg will be dazed for a short while, giving the player an opportunity to hit it by jumping on the mech's head.
  • The Big Egg remains still and activates a zero-gravity field while sending waves of yellow plasma orbs towards the player that will damage them. It is possible for the player to damage Eggman by floating all the way to the Big Egg's head, then activate their Spin Attack by pressing the jump button to hit the head. If the player opts to try to attack the Big Egg, they will need to be relatively quick as the zero-gravity field will eventually deactivate after a short while, causing the player to potentially fall into the gap and die. An easier method to hit the Big Egg in this attack is to preemptively use Emerald Powers like Bullet and Ivy, or using Tails' flight to reach the space above the Big Egg's head before the zero-gravity field is activated. This safely positions the player (since the plasma orbs will never fire in that direction) and be ready to attack the mech's head as soon as the zero-gravity field is activated.
  • Afterwards, the Big Egg chases the player while emitting an array of lasers from its satellite disks. The player must look for when it flashes before avoiding the lasers by jumping (or not accidentally jumping if the laser is fired from one of the two higher satellite disks).
  • After taking enough hits, while chasing the player, the Big Egg crouches low, extend its arms and spin them around. These arms will reach the platform and will damage the player if they touch the arms.

After six more hits, the fight will end. To finish the fight once and for all, activate the Avatar power to give the two final hits to finish the fight.

Trivia

  • The structure of this boss is similar to that of the Giant Eggman Robo's, the robot starts by attacking from the background, and once it is hit enough, it will chase the player until it is destroyed.

Notes

  1. While not listed in any instruction manuals, the audio files of Sonic Superstars refer to this boss as "bigegg."
