History
Past
At some point, Balloon met Ann and they have been close friends ever since. However, Shupeal learned of his existence and destroyed the entire town they resided in to get him, forcing them to flee. Shupeal then managed to capture Ann and used her as bait to lure Balloon to him.
During the confrontation, Balloon was shot by Shupeal, but he managed to fly away.[1]
Romance Dawn, Version 2
While flying through the air with his injury, Balloon crash landed on Luffy's dinghy, creating a hole in it. Luffy used Balloon to plug the hole, but when he saw Shupeal's ship approaching, he tried to fly away again, fighting against Luffy's grip. At Shupeal's request, the young pirate brought Balloon aboard, and he was placed in a cage. He watched as Luffy insulted Shupeal and he and Ann were thrown into the brig.
Sometime later, Ann and Luffy escaped their cell, and Ann returned to the deck. She reassured Balloon that she would be coming to free him, to Balloon's joy. He watched as she took one of the pirates hostage and recovered the key to his cage, cheering for joy when she came over to lock it; however, she was shot from behind by Shupeal, causing Balloon to jump backwards in shock. He continued to watch, mouth agape, as Luffy defeated Shupeal.
However, during Luffy's subsequent explanation of his abilities, Balloon was taken from the cage by Shupeal, who leashed him with a rope and flew into the sky. Balloon was pulled away against his will as Shupeal destroyed the ship and left. Still on the ship, Ann rescued Luffy from drowning, and the young pirate launched himself into the air after Shupeal, landing on Balloon's back. From there, Luffy jumped onto Shupeal's broomstick, breaking the rope tying Balloon and allowing him to fly away so Luffy could punch Shupeal, knocking him into the sky.
With Shupeal gone, Balloon took Luffy's head in his beak and carried him back to the ship's wreckage, where he reunited with Ann. The two of them flew off, saying their goodbyes to Luffy.[1]
Trivia

- In One Piece, there is a scene where Luffy accidentally gets himself caught by the giant bird Pinky. The way Pinky caught Luffy in its beak is similar to the way Balloon transported Luffy back to Ann.[2] The title page of the manga chapter in which this scene happens also shows several small "Balloon" like birds.
