Scales[1][4] is a Sea King. It is one of the six Sea Kings that speak to Shirahoshi when she fully manifests the power of Poseidon.[2]
Appearance
Scales is a large eel-like Sea King. Its body is completely blue and covered in scales, with a light green beard under its chin and two large tusks protruding from its mouth. It has two fins part way down its back and a long dorsal fin traversing its body.
Personality
Like its fellow Sea Kings, Scales respects Poseidon (Shirahoshi) as its queen and responds to her call. It also values Noah and intervened to stop Luffy from destroying the ship, as it awaits the "promised day" when the the ship will be used.[2][3]
Abilities and Powers
As a Sea King, Scales is one of the largest and most powerful creatures to inhabit the ocean.[2]
It is shown to be quite intelligent by way of conversations it has with its kind and Shirahoshi.[2][3]
History
Past

About 26 years ago, Scales and Topknot were swimming through the ocean when they passed by the Roger Pirates' ship descending. The two Sea Kings discussed the upcoming birth of their sovereign, and the birth of another sovereign in a distant sea. Their conversation was heard by Roger and Oden, surprising the two Sea Kings.[5][6]
Fish-Man Island Saga
Fish-Man Island Arc
Scales was one of the Sea Kings unconsciously summoned by Shirahoshi when Luffy was attempting to destroy Noah to save Fish-Man. Scales and five others of its kind—Mottled, Googly-Eyed, Underbite, Topknot and Birdy—took ahold of the ship's chains, halting its descend. Conversing with Shirahoshi, the Sea Kings explained that she was their sovereign and had called them. After Shirahoshi left to save the fainted Luffy, the Sea Kings talked amongst themselves. They noted that it had seemed as if Luffy had heard their voices, something that previously occured with Gol D. Roger. They then wondered if Noah could be repaired before the "promised day". After pulling Noah to the Sea Forest, they swam away.[2][3]
