Mottled[1][4] is a Sea King.[2] It is one of the six Sea Kings that speak to Shirahoshi when she fully manifests the power of Poseidon.[5]
Appearance
Mottled is a large Sea King that resembles a massive moray eel. Its dorsal fin is light blue while its body features a signature black and white mottled pattern.[2]

Mottled seems to be relatively peaceful for a Sea King. Like its fellow Sea Kings, it respects Poseidon (Shirahoshi) as its queen and responds to her call. It also values Noah and intervened to stop Luffy from destroying the ship, as it awaits the "promised day" when the the ship will be used.[5][3]
Abilities and Powers
As a Sea King, Mottled is one of the largest and most powerful creatures to inhabit the ocean. Its sneeze is shown to have enough power to propel a ship like the Going Merry over a noticeable distance.[2]
It is shown to be quite intelligent by way of conversations it has with its kind and Shirahoshi.[5][3]
History
Arabasta Saga
Reverse Mountain Arc
When the Straw Hat Pirates accidentally sailed into the Calm Belt, Mottled and other Sea Kings, including Birdy and Googly-Eyed, emerged from the sea. The Going Merry ended up on top of Mottled, who appeared confused as it could not see the ship. Mottled then sneezed, sending the Going Merry flying back into East Blue waters.[2]
Fish-Man Island Saga
Fish-Man Island Arc
Mottled was one of the Sea Kings unconsciously summoned by Shirahoshi when Luffy was attempting to destroy Noah to save Fish-Man Island. Mottled and five others of its kind—Birdy, Googly-Eyed, Underbite, Scales and Topknot—took ahold of the ship's chains, halting its descend. Conversing with Shirahoshi, the Sea Kings explained that she was their sovereign and had called them. After Shirahoshi left to save the fainted Luffy, the Sea Kings talked amongst themselves. They noted that it had seemed as if Luffy had heard their voices, something that previously occured with Gol D. Roger. They then wondered if Noah could be repaired before the "promised day". After pulling Noah to the Sea Forest, they swam away.[5][3]
Anime and Manga Differences
In the manga, Mottled sneezes seemingly unprompted (if not tickled by the presence of the Going Merry). In the anime, Apis intentionally causes it to sneeze by pulling out one of its nose hairs.[2]
In the manga, Mottled was not present during the Roger Pirates' descent into Fish-Man Island, and did not experience being heard by Roger and Oden firsthand. In the anime, it and Underbite were both added to the scene, and witnessed the event directly.[6]
