Bee

Bees are a form of wildlife living in the wilderness of Oddworld. Abe finds out that Elum especially likes their honey, and gets easily distracted by it. They are found in the Monsaic Lines, Scrabania, and Paramonia, along with probably many other places throughout Oddworld. However, Abe doesn't like the bees, and the bees do not like Abe.

Gameplay

RElumBeesRockart

Bees either live in a honey vase or a nest. If the nest is disturbed or Abe passes by a swarm hanging around the vase, then they will chase him for a limited time. Being caught in the swarm will decrease Abe's health, and will eventually kill him. Bees also attack Paramites, which can serve as a useful distraction for Abe from both the bees and the Paramite. The bees will disturb Elum, although they will not kill it. The bees are often needed to stop Elum being distracted by honey. After enough time, the bee swarm will fly upwards.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

In Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, if Abe is attacked by the bees, he will flail his arms in a circular formation. He can still move, but Abe's grunting sound will start to rise up in pitch as he looses his health. When Abe's grunting sound gets too high, he will die. It is the only mechanic that can kill Abe that does not do so in one hit.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty

In Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, bees will remove birds from Abe's halo every half second he spends inside the swarm. While Abe is in the swarm, he will try to swat the bees around his head using his hands, while repeatedly screaming 'ow'. The bees can be distracted by giving them to natives, Paramites, or Elum. The natives will also swat bees around their heads, though they will never die from it.

Oddworld: Soulstorm

Sanctum Bee Hive

The bees in Soulstorm do not appear in the gameplay, and only appear in the Sanctum's cutscenes. Unlike their appearances in previous games, these bees appears somewhat domesticated, living in vase-like bee hives as opposed to the more natural and misshapen ones found in Paramonia and Scrabania, and they do not attack Abe on sight.

The Keepers used the bees as a way to measure the ecological and spiritual health of Mudos: the more polluted the environment, the less honey the bees would make. A lake of honey lies in the centre of the Sanctum, and a device that could give the Mudokon messiah the knowledge kept in the memories of the Keepers laid at the base: when the fate of the world was in the balance, the device would reveal itself and it would be time to prepare for the arrival of Abe.

Notes

  • In Abe's Oddysee, the bees can be used with a glitch to skip Paramonia and Scrabania during an any percent speedrun.
  • In New n Tasty, Mudokons that get stung by bees will occasionally say “No, not the bees, not the bees”, referencing a deleted scene from the Nicolas Cage movie The Wicker Man.[1]
