Shiiho

"You wanna dig out my tush crystal, Yukine?!"
This article contains manga spoilers. Read at your own risk.

Shiiho ( (しい) () Shīho?) is Arahabaki's shinki. He is better known throughout Heaven by his monikers Shiigun ( (しい) (ぐん) Shīgun?) or the Plague of Locusts ( (こう) () Kouka?).[1]

Appearance

Shiiho has the appearance of a preteen boy. He has black hair and dark eyes. He wears a white kimono top with black stripes on the sleeves over a black gakuran. He also wears a pair of boots that reach his lower shins.[2]

When he is first seen in his human form, he has a scar traversing diagonally across the right side of his forehead. It is much smaller the next time it appears,[3] implying that it is most likely a scarred wound he acquired during the subjugation of Bishamon.[4]

Personality

Shiiho has a boisterous, teasing personality around his master and friends. However, Shiiho seems much shyer and more awkward when around adults he doesn't know well, such as the Seven Gods of Fortune.[2] He is protective of his master and somewhat combative. This is shown by how he yelled at Yato that he wouldn't lose to him again, but became much calmer and cheerier when Arahabaki assured him that Yato had not come to cause trouble.[4] Shiiho also seems to be rather blunt or crass.

Synopsis (Manga)

Yomi Arc

Shiigun is mentioned by Kugaha as "Arahabaki's troops". A few men on horseback are drawn in the background as a demonstration of his vessel form.[5]

Heaven Arc

Tsuiki is summoned by Arahabaki to help subjugate Bishamonten. However, at this point in time his human form is not revealed.[6] Part of Tsuiki's vessel– a single man on horseback– is stabbed through by Yato, who is demonstrating to Yukine that defeating one member of the army does little to harm Tsuiki as a whole.[1] Soon after, a cloaked Arahabaki rides one of Tsuiki's horses down to inform Shinatsuhiko of Yato's apprehension. Shinatsuhiko later tells Arahabaki to send Shiiho away, since he is damaging plant life on the Near Shore.[7] Arahabaki later arrives at the site of the completed Trial by Pledge, carrying an unconscious Bishamon. Shiiho remains in the background as a horse, implying he had carried them both there.[8]

Stray Arc

In his search for a new partner to defeat Father, Yato visits Arahabaki to see Nana. Arahabaki tells Shiiho that Yukine wasn't with him, hinting that Shiiho had wanted to meet him, even though Shiiho denies this. Shiiho appears flustered when Arahabaki pulls him over to say hello, but he quickly collects himself and says adamantly that he isn't going to lose to Yato again. He is bewildered when Yato responds by cooing at him and asking him to befriend Yukine if they ever do meet. The other shinki present seem concerned that Yato may be their master's enemy since he had gone against the Heavens, but Arahabaki says that it's fine. Shiiho take shis word, and then appears much cheerier as he gathers everyone for lunch.[4]

Ooharai Arc

Shiiho explains to Nana the purpose of the Great Purification, which he and Arahabaki would partake in together this year. He teases her for not being able to leave the mountain with them, and jokingly tells her not to sleep with her belly out before they leave.[9]

Shiiho is seen with Arahabaki as gods gather to prepare for their departure for the Great Purification. When they speak to the Seven Gods of Fortune (excluding Bishamonten, Ōkuninushi, and Ebisu), Shiiho awkwardly introduces himself. Hotei is surprised that a small-spoken child is the one who transforms into Shiigun/Tsuiki, while Benzaiten coos that she finds him adorable, and Fukurokuju and Jurojin also welcome him kindly. Shiiho blatantly asks where Ebisu and Ōkuninushi are, and then essentially says that the Gods of Fortune who are present are the less-important background characters, much to Arahabaki's distress.

Shiiho and Arahabaki are assigned to cleanse Bishamonten's patrol area. After Arahabki explains Shiigun's problem with borderlines, Benzaiten sends her shinki away with Shiigun. Murasaki asks Shiigun what he meant when he said that the other gods of fortune are background characters.[2]

Right before beginning their rounds for the Great Purification, Arahabaki rides one of Tsuiki's horses. Shiiho suggests that they try some of the local food. Arahabaki tells him they can just pick up souvenirs on their way back, but Shiiho bluntly says that he has bad taste in souvenirs. He excitedly says they stop by the bank, but they notice that strangely, there are no ayakashi around. Shiiho wonders if there are only small ones in the area, but they're stopped by a thin tendril in the sky. Two people, presumably other gods who are making their rounds, are caught in the same tendrils. It appears that these tendrils are part of Hagusa's Goodness Net.[10]

Final Arc

After the Goodness Net suddenly vanishes, Shiiho gleefully helps exterminate ayakashi, saving multiple gods in the process. One god expresses regret at ever referring to him as "pestilence". On the ground, Arahabaki uses another unnamed shinki– a small blade– to exterminate an ayakashi that Shiiho had missed since it was hiding underneath a car.[11]

Later, Arahabaki encounters the fires started by Kagutsuchi and has Shiiho use the Firefighting Incantation to help put them out. After Arahabaki discovers the reincarnated Kagutsuchi, Shinatsuhiko, and Yatagarasu, Shiiho interrupts by altering him of something strange he is witnessing. The furthest piece of his vessel form has encountered what seems to be a large, expanding lake. He is shocked when unfamiliar creatures emerge from the water and crawl onto the shore, exclaiming that there is something strange about them as they do not appear to be regular ayakashi.[3]

Skills & Abilities

Tsuiki-68
  • Vessel Transformation: As Arahabaki's vessel, Shiiho's name is Tsuiki ( (つい) () ). Tsuiki takes the form of an army of men on horseback. According to Yato, since Shiiho is split across so many parts, defeating one man or horse barely registers as a scratch to him.[6]
    • Flight: The horses are capable of traveling through the air as well as on solid ground.[6]
    • Pestilence: Tsuiki's horses carry pestilence.[2] Their footsteps are capable of causing plant life on the Near Shore to die.[7]
    • Mental borderlines: According to Arahabaki, shinki that are split into many parts have more difficulty maintaining a borderline.[2] Since Tsuiki is spread into an army of men and horses, he is at high risk of damaging the Near Shore.
  • Firefighting Incantation ( () () せの (じゅ) () Hifuse no juka?): Shiiho can recite a song to help douse flames.[3]

Trivia

  • The moniker Shīgun ( (しい) (ぐん) ) is likely in reference to his vessel form, since the character (ぐん) means "army, battle".[12]
  • The moniker Kouka ( (こう) () ) contains the character () , meaning "calamity, misfortune".[13] According to Yato, this nickname is used as an insult toward Shiiho.[1]
  • Shiiho's forehead scar is present in Chapter 76 and Chapter 104. However, it is absent during all of his appearances in-between these chapters.
  • While in his vessel form, the men on horseback chant "Om" ( (おん) On?), meaning "grudge" or "hatred," particularly in reference to having been wronged in the past.[14]
