Capyper

Capyper (カピパー Kapipā?) are a type of mascot popular within the Noragami universe, especially with children.

Appearance

The Capyper are creatures that appear to be based on the capybara rodent. Unlike the real animal (which is a quadruped), Capyper stand and walk on two legs. They have yellow fur and long, oval-like faces with exaggerated jowls, a small mouth, and small, rounded ears.

Workers at Capyper Land who wear Capyper costumes typically have the addition of red overalls, brown boots, and large, white gloves. Depending on their role, they may wear additional clothing, such as pirate costumes.[1][2]

Capyper Land

Capyper Land (カピパーランド Capipaa Rando?) is an amusement park centered around the mascot. It seems to contain numerous rides, concession stands, and merchandise stores. They also run a light parade, titled the Elekiter Parade, in the evening before closing.[1] Some of their merchandise includes snow globes, headbands with ears attached, alarm clocks, clothes and undergarments, stuffed animals, and key chains.[3]

Synopsis

History

Not much is known about the Capyper franchise other than that it seems to be aimed towards families and children. According to the franchise lore, long ago, the ancestors of Capyper lived far away on a small island nation. Much of the population was wiped out by a plague, until one Capyper pointed toward the rising sun on the horizon and claimed they would find a land with food, warmth, and happiness abundant. The surviving Capyper then swam across the ocean in pursuit of this destination, and only one couple arrived. Their descendants now populate the new kingdom of Capyper, Capyper Land.[3]

The mascot was first mentioned in Chapter 4 where Yato gives Yukine a Capyper jacket but Yukine rejects it. It is mentioned in Chapter 29 when Hiyori's friend wants to go there with Hiyori, their other friend, and three guys so she can hook up with Fujisaki, though she ends up dating someone else. They go to Capyper Land in Chapter 30 where Hiyori begins to forget Yato and Yukine and Fujisaki kisses her while they watch the light parade. Hiyori goes again in Chapter 41 when Yato wants to cheer her up. Merchandise can be seen in Chapter 42. It is mentioned again in chapter 46 when Father teases Yato about going to Capyper Land with Hiyori and kissing her.

Trivia

  • The Capyper franchise is similar to the Walt Disney Franchise in that it has a family-friendly amusement park and merchandise centered around a rodent mascot. Like the real-world Tokyo Disney Resort, Capyper Land is also located in Chiba.[4]
  • Yato is known to be a big fan of Capyper, to the point where he believes them to be actual mystical creatures.[3] Kofuku seems to be a fan as well, as stated in Stray Stories Chapter 1.
