Bone King

“If you won't be polite and get crushed by the Walls of Punishment, then we'll just have to destroy you the old-fashioned way.”
— The Bone King to Kai and Wyldfyre, "Wyldly Inappropriate"

The Bone King (also known as the Green Bone Leader[1]) is the ruler of the Greenbone Warriors.

History

Background

At some point before Garmadon's banishment, the Bone King reigned as the ruler of the Underworld until he would be forcibly dethroned by Samukai and imprisoned in a mystical prison beneath the Sea of Sand.[2] Five Bone Weapons were required to unseal his prison and free him.[3]

One day, while training in a basement beneath the Sea of Sand, the ninja came across the Bone King and his army of Greenbone Warriors, who, as it turned out, were looking for bone weapons.[3] After many battles, the Greenbone Warriors captured all five bone weapons and freed the Bone King. The Bone King then launched an attack on Ninjago City to begin a new era of Skeletons. The ninja discovered a way to defeat the Bone King by taking his bone weapons and locking him again in his mystical prison beneath the Sea of Sand.[4]

Presumably, the Merge freed the skeletons from their prison, leaving the Bone King and his Greenbone Warriors without a home. He and a small group of warriors then relocated to a forest.

Wyldly Inappropriate

Kai and Wyldfyre found themselves ensnared within the Walls of Punishment, when an opportunity for escape presented itself through the intervention of the Bone King. In exchange for their freedom, the Bone King requested the return of their precious gems, assuring them that he would release them upon compliance. However, Kai maintained that they were devoid of the gems, explaining that their recent halt in the forest was solely for the purpose of rest. Wyldfyre's disparaging remarks towards the Greenbone Warriors provoked the Bone King's impatience, resulting in the reactivation of the walls. As Kai and Wyldfyre successfully evade the confines of the Walls of Punishment, the Bone King asserted that if they refuse to comply, he will resort to more conventional means of eliminating them.

Kai denied having the Greenbone Warriors' gems, but the Bone King demanded their immediate return. Reluctantly, Wyldfyre decided to comply and gave away the gems. The Bone King expressed regret for not punishing them, but Kai proposed that returning the gems should be seen as a fair resolution. However, Wyldfyre couldn't resist pulling another prank and burned the Bone King's hand when he tried to shake on their agreement. Kai and Wyldfyre escaped on Heatwave, while the Greenbone Warriors threw their swords at them but failed to hit their target.

Trivia

  • The fact that the Bone King seems not to recognize Kai, whom he has already encountered several times as an enemy, means either that he simply doesn't recognise one of the ninja (just like Gulch not recognizing Zane), or that the comics he appeared in are non-canon.
  • He is the eleventh character to have a cape in the sets, the first ten are Lloyd (in his child form), Chen, Morro, the Time Twins, Harumi, Wu, the Blizzard Sword Masters, Akita, and Mammatus.
  • He wears a cape in the sets, but not in the show.
  • The bone in his bone crown is white in the sets, but tan in the show.
