— Flavor Text • Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe |
Stone is one of Kirby's Copy Abilities, debuting in Kirby's Adventure.
General Information
Stone is almost entirely a defensive ability—unless Kirby happens to use it above a foe's head. However, in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Stone gets a move called Stone Uppercut, which gives another way to use the power for offense. Stone is an easy way to beat bosses with minimal damage by simply dropping over the boss' head and staying in stone form until the boss moves away. It can also avoid devastating full-screen attacks, like Marx's black hole, however, it cannot avoid some of these devastating attacks in the more recent games. The hat is composed of a headband with five crystals, two horns, and rocks on top.
The Stone hat originally had the same design as the Ninja hat with different colors, but Kirby wears a different one as of Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It has a rocky appearance similar to Ice's. A similar brown hat was also intended for the unreleased Kirby GCN.
Stone is a Mode for Robobot Armor in Kirby: Planet Robobot.
Games
Kirby's Adventure and Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Stone debuts in Kirby's Adventure. Here, Stone only has two moves; transforming into a brown rock with eyes on it, and transforming back from this form. Stone is obtained from Rocky.
Stone returns in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, serving the same purpose, but Kirby now has a brown color and a hat; both of which were inherited from Kirby Super Star.

Kirby's Dream Course
With the ability to instantly halt Kirby's movement on the ground or in the air, Stone is an extremely useful Copy Ability in Kirby's Dream Course. If the player activates it with good timing, it can be used to set up an ideal shot from any spot, rescue Kirby from rolling off the course or into a hazard, or even to drop straight down into a hole from above (which makes a unique "clunk" sound). However, it is typically not kept for long, since defeating an enemy with a different Copy Ability will always immediately replace it. Unlike with Needle, Kirby will not hang onto inclines in Stone form; rather, he will slowly slide down them without any sideways movement. A few holes are designed around this behavior.
Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3
Stone reappears in Kirby's Dream Land 2, having the same moveset as Kirby's Adventure, but the amount of moves it has are expanded due to the inclusion of Animal Friends. Stone is obtained from Rocky and Blocky. Like in Kirby's Dream Course, Kirby will slide down slopes.
In Kirby's Dream Land 3, on top of Rocky and Blocky, Stone is also obtainable from Gansan and club-wielding Bukiset. The inclusion of ChuChu, Pitch, and Nago further expand Stone's moveset.

Kirby's Block Ball
Stone appears as oune of the four Copy Abilities in Kirby's Block Ball, once again obtained from Rocky. While using Stone, Kirby falls straight down, crushing blocks until Kirby hits the paddle.
Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra
Stone reappears in Kirby Super Star. Despite Kirby Super Star normally greatly expanding ability movesets, Stone only has one new move: Turbo Stone. Stone Kirby becomes brown with a hat resembling Ninja. Stone is obtained from Rocky, who is its Helper, as well as the rocks that appear during Fatty Whale and Wham Bam Rock's boss fights. Kirby Super Star is also the first game to give Stone multiple forms, rather than just a simple rock.
Stone remains unchanged in Kirby Super Star Ultra, except that the ability can now be obtained from Wham Bam Jewel's diamonds and more forms have been added to Stone.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Stone appears as one of the seven available Copy Abilities in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. In this game, Stone works differently: Kirby now turns into a statue of himself, and will allow Kirby to fall down ledges quickly, roll down slopes, and walk slowly, but Kirby cannot jump in this form. Stone can be combined with other abilities, including itself, to create Power Combos with new attacks and effects. Stone is obtained from Rocky, Cairn, Pompey, and Hack.

Stone is obtained from Rocky, Giant Rocky, Golem, King Golem, Master Hand's stars (in both his mid-boss and boss forms), and Crazy Hand's stars.

Kirby: Canvas Curse
Stone reappears in Kirby: Canvas Curse. Here, Kirby transforms into a rock that falls straight down and defeats every enemy below him. The weight of this ability means that Stone sinks below water and cannot ride up rainbow lines. Stone is obtained from Rocky.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Stone appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, gaining a lot of new moves, beyond just turning Kirby into a stone. Here, Kirby can perform an uppercut using a stone fist, and can increase the size of his stone form to create a shockwave. Stone is obtained from Rocky and Moundo.
In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Stone has the Spin and Mighty Uppercut moves from Kirby: Triple Deluxe.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot
Stone returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, having a similar moveset to Kirby's Return to Dream Land, but with two new moves: the Mighty Uppercut and Spin. Stone is obtained from Rocky and Blocky.
Stone reappears in Kirby: Planet Robobot, being mostly unchanged from Kirby: Triple Deluxe. However, the inclusion of the Robobot Armor allows for new moves to be executed with the armor, and on top of the methods from Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Stone can now be obtained from Clanky Woods' boulders, as well as the Bowser amiibo.

Kirby's Dream Buffet
Stone appears as a Copy Food Ability in Kirby's Dream Buffet. Here, it is gained from Stone Chocolate. Its sole move transforms Kirby into a bar of chocolate and drops Kirby on the ground, creating a shockwave that knocks opponents back.
In the Super Smash Bros. series

In the Super Smash Bros series, Stone is Kirby's Down Special attack. He can only turn into his distinct rock form in Super Smash Bros., but in Super Smash Bros. Melee onward, the ability acts more like its Kirby Super Star variant, turning Kirby into a variety of heavy objects. These include his normal Stone form, a 100t Weight (reminiscent of the 8t weight), a narrow garbage block from Panel de Pon (in the floral style associated with the character Lip), a spiked ball (resembling a Gordo without eyes), and a Thwomp from the Super Mario series, using its design from Super Mario 64. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Kirby can take on the new form of a Sheikah treasure chest from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Kirby can change his stone using custom moves. He can now also use Grounding Stone or Meteor Stone. Grounding Stone allows Kirby to bury opponents that he lands on, but it takes longer for him to transform into. Meteor Stone gives a meteor effect to opponents hit by the attack, but it takes longer to transform out of.
Like in Kirby's own games, he's still invulnerable to attacks (except grabs) regardless of what he turns into. Unlike most games, however, Kirby can only stay in his Stone form for around 3 seconds, rather than indefinitely. The ability can be used to attack foes from above; Stone also slides down slopes, but Stone doesn't damage opponents when it slides. Starting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the attack can be broken; anything damaging enough to do at least 30% damage, despite inflicting no damage, can force him out of stone form with full knockback.
Statues
Names of transformations are taken from page 142 of the 20th Anniversary Kirby Dream Encyclopedia and from guidebooks for Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby: Planet Robobot; as such, any transformations added afterward do not have official names.

ストーン | Stone | 19930323 | 19930323 | ![]() |
Kirby's default Stone form has remained fairly consistent. Some games make the shape octagonal or rounded, where he instead rolls on slopes instead of sliding; in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Kirby transforms into a Kirby-shaped stone that can walk around or curl up into a ball when idle or to roll down slopes. Stone's color was originally orange in Kirby's Adventure before changing to pink in Kirby's Dream Course then becoming gray in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Stone changes back to orange in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land before defaulting to pink again in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror due to the inclusion of Spray Paint. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, it is now colored light brown before becoming more orange in Kirby: Triple Deluxe onward. In Kirby's Dream Buffet, the stone form is shaped like a chocolate bar with segments in a 2x3 grid and corresponds to Kirby's color. |

“ | Tiff: Kirby copied Blocky. Tuff: Yeah, and now Kirby's a Rock Star Warrior!” |
— Tiff & Tuff realizing what ability Kirby gained from swallowing a piece of Blocky • A Blockbuster Battle |

In the anime, Kirby keeps the traditional Stone hat from Kirby Super Star, but his skin turns stone-gray instead of brown. Surprisingly, the ability works more like the one from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, specifically the Stone Stone mix, allowing Kirby to turn into a giant, pink stone statue of himself which can walk and jump, albeit very slowly.
Stone Kirby is a copy ability that relies on pure defense and endurance with his only attack being to use his sheer bulk to crush enemies below him. In the transformation sequence, Kirby's skin changes to gray. A flash of light forms his hat and he puts it on.

Trivia
- In Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, this ability still turned Kirby brown, even in multiplayer. This was removed in later games to prevent confusion, eliminating Kirby's color-changing feature.
- Oddly, in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the icon was a Waddle Dee sitting on Transformed Stone Kirby. In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, it was Stone Kirby landing on a Waddle Dee. It was probably changed because the function of the ability went from a plain block to the round stone of most games.
- This also makes it the only ability in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land to get a different icon in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.
- In the credits of Revenge of the King and the original Kirby Super Star's Milky Way Wishes credits, the Mario statue is seen just before the credits finish. A real, 'flesh' Mario is seen at the end of Kirby Super Star's credits, however.
- In Kirby Super Star Ultra, if Kirby happens to morph into his Macho Statue form and he's on a slope, the statue will appear to actually be posing. When sliding, this form automatically changes to include different poses (two in Kirby Super Star) depending on how steep the hill is.
- Until Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Stone Kirby's hat was the same as Ninja Kirby's hat, just a different color. This was likely intended to evoke many other pop-cultural depictions of ninja that are able to instantly substitute themselves with common objects, such as rocks or logs, to conceal themselves and avoid attacks. (An example of this trope from a Nintendo game is Greninja's Substitute special attack in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U). The ability's appearance may have been changed out of concern that this connection was confusing or unclear to non-Japanese audiences, and/or to give the Stone ability a thematically wider variety of attacks.
- The Thwomp that Kirby can transform into in Super Smash Bros. Melee is based on Thwomp's design from Super Mario 64. The Stone's design was not updated for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, despite the fact that Thwomp's design had drastically changed several years before the game's release. The Stone's design was later updated in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U to reflect Thwomp's appearance in New Super Mario Bros. U.
- In the original Super Smash Bros., Kirby's only Stone transformation reflected Kirby's Stone transformation in Kirby's Adventure where he turned brown. In the rest of the Super Smash Bros. installments, Kirby retains this form, only he turns pink instead of brown.
- Stone is one of six abilities that has a voluntary form that makes the player invulnerable from nearly all damage; the other four are Leaf with its Leaf Hide, Ice with its Ice Block, Archer with its Camouflage, Smash Bros. with its Stone ability, and Sand with its Sand Hide.
- Every major update for Kirby Star Allies gave Stone new transformations based on the three waves of downloadable Dream Friends.
