Needlous is an enemy in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. It yields the Needle ability when inhaled.
Physical Appearance
Needlous is a small little larva-like enemy with yellow and dark brown (black in artworks) stripes running along its small, slug-like body. Its body has eight sharp pointy spikes along its back. It has small, beady black eyes. When curled up to a ball, four of its spikes will be present.
Games
Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Needlous replaces Togezo from Kirby's Adventure. On a regular basis, it moves around slowly, but will occasionally curl up into a ball and roll vigorously at high speed when approached.
Kirby: Canvas Curse
Needlous acts the same as before; it appears in Stages 1 and 2 of Wonder Lilane, Frozen Fantasy, and Mad Mechanism.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Needlous's black stripes are now more of a brown color. Needlous also appears in the New Challenge Stages in Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition; it appears in the Smash Combat Chamber and Magolor Race EX.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Needlous retains its behavior from the 2D games. However, a Needlous that strikes a wall mid-roll will bounce off and change direction.
Etymology
Needlous's name is a portmanteau of "needle," referencing its spiky body; and "louse," referencing its appearance. Alternatively, the name's ending may simply be the -ous suffix that is used to change a noun to an adjective describing something that possesses that noun.
Trivia
- Needlous is most likely based on the Lophocampa maculata species, commonly known as the Spotted Tussock Moth Caterpillar.
- Needlous's tactic of rolling around as a spiky ball later appears as one of Needle's moves in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
