To Be Human (人として Hito Toshite?) is the eighth chapter of the Centuria manga series.
Summary
After meeting up with Angvall, Joseph, and his father, Julian asks for them to get behind him as he faces the wood humanoid. The wood humanoid calls out Julian as an intruder, explaining to him that invading the forest is unforgivable for beings who belong to the sea and that it intends on killing both him and the baby. Julian becomes angered by this, telling the wood humanoid that it is the one who doesn't understand and that he will make him eat its words. Julain dodges the wood humanoid's wooden sword attacks and lands a hit that sends it knock back to a tree, much to Angvall's amazement as to how strong Julian is. The wood humanoid then fuses with the tree behind it to emerge from a tree near Julain to attack. Julain moves out of the way on time and throws a punch at the wood humanoid, only to puncture a hole through the tree after the wood humanoid relocates to the ground and tries attacking Julian from behind. After breaking the wood humanoid's arm with his knee and has it shift locations again, Julian reassures Angvall that he is fine after receiving a cut and determines that the best way for him to defeat the wood humanoid, after taking note of its ability to move underground and heal injuries, is to destroy it into pieces. The wood humanoid generates thorns from its sword and fires them towards Angvall, Joseph, and his father. Julian comes in to shield them and continues to do so as the wood humanoid constantly fires more thorns. After Angvall tells him that he does not have to keep protecting them, Julian has a flashback to when his master brutally abused one of his slaves and how he used to believe that helping others brought nothing good after also being beaten by his master for attempting to help the slave. Julian then tells Angvall that he wants to help the people he cares about, having come to the realization that helping others is what it means to be human after being helped by so many others, and charges straight through the wood humanoid's thorns while being fully aware of its limitations when attacking this way. Before it could fully merge with the ground, Julian grabs its arm, throws it upwards to thwart any chance of it escaping, and leaps in to throw a single punch that completely destroys the wood humanoid.
