Hey grandpa. Today was cool. I fought a big supervillain for the first time ever. I got a costume. It's awesome. It's a lot like the one dad used to wear. You'd like it... I mean, if you liked dad's costume... I don't know. I wish I got to meet you. I know you did bad stuff sometimes... But dad talks about you like you were the coolest. My real dad isn't the biggest fan... anyway... I'm kind of the new Invincible now. Which is pretty cool. Feels funny, that name... Especially because it's something I know I'm not. My dad's out there... fixing the universe. I think about that every time I look up at the stars... because each little dot of light in the sky is a place he's made better. I look up and see all he's done.
~ Markus' reflections to his grandfather Omni-Man's grave.

Markus "Marky" Murphy, later known as Invincible, is a minor character in the Image Comics series Invincible.

Being one of the only Viltrumites left on Earth after his father Mark Grayson's takeover of the Empire, Marky shortly began operating as the superhero Kid Invincible to live up to his legacy. Unfortunately, Marky came to unhealthily worship his father, putting him on an unreachable pedestal and himself on the dirt.

This unhealthy worship would only worsen after learning about his origins as the aftermath of a sexual assault, coming to the conclusion that he was cursed with being "bad" and that he was only a burden to Mark. This worship eventually turned into hatred, culminating in a violent altercation with his father.

Biography

Background

Marky was the result of Anissa's sexual assault on Mark Grayson shortly after his return from Mohawk Mark's dimension. Sometime after his conception, Anissa met a human named Scott Murphy and, against all odds, fell in love with him, presumably as a result of her time on Earth finally taking a toll on her Viltrumite pride.

As the years rolled by, Anissa's tough exterior began to soften up due to Scott and especially Marky's love, which inspired her to sacrifice herself on the final battle against Thragg. In her final moments, Anissa apologized to Atom Eve for what she had done to her husband, but admitted to not regretting it at all, as she wouldn't have birthed Marky if it wasn't for it.

After learning about his existence, Mark would track Marky down and explained what his relation with him was alongside a rundown on his legacy. Mark allowed Marky and his family to stay behind on Earth as the rest of the Viltrumites left the planet in hopes that he would have a similar childhood to the one he had.

As the Murphy family saw the Viltrumites leave the planet, Marky became confused as to who consider his "real" father, until Scott quickly reassured him that everything is still the same between them; only that he had an extra space dad. Marky hugged Scott, claiming him to be his real dad.

Although originally indifferent, Marky would soon become fascinated by his father's actions as Invincible, even researching about The Invincible War and Omni-Man's deeds, which was seemingly encouraged by Mark.

Marky would also receive frequent visits from his extended family, even coming to meet his half-sister Terra Grayson, who wasn't particularly pleased about his existence just yet.

Kid Invincible

After manifesting his powers and accidentally breaking Terra's tablet during a visit, his new grandmother Debbie took Marky out for a surprise. The two walked to Art Rosenbaum's old clothes store and Marky assumed that she just wanted to buy him clothes. However, her true intentions became much clearer once he was face to face with Art, who revealed himself to be the one who made both Omni-Man and Invincible's suits. Excited, Marky hugged Debbie and thanked him for her blessing at such a young age, which she justified by saying that his Uncle Oliver was significantly younger than him when he first started.

Now donning a new iteration of his father's Invincible suit, Marky soared the skies in celebration, only to spot a major battle happening in the city. Marky quickly joined the battle against Vengeance, a renegade member of the current Guardians of the Globe who had become consumed by darkness, receiving commendations from the team. After receiving a brutal blow from Marky, Vengeance began overcharging with darkness and expelled Darkwing II from his mouth, which apparently shows that his powers were related to the Shadowverse.

Monster Girl explained to him that Darkwing had been missing since his sacrifice in the Invincible War, to which Marky responds that he was familiar with it, referring to Invincible as his father. The rest of the Guardians weren't exactly shocked judging by his costume design, but did ask him if he was taking over the Invincible mantle, to which Marky decided that he was going by "Kid Invincible" for now.

Meanwhile, somewhere else, Angstrom Levy's son steps out of a portal and vows revenge towards Mark Grayson for the murder of his father. While not shown on-screen, it is heavily implied that Angstrom Jr. and Markus had a rivalry similar to their fathers'.

Somehow, Markus would eventually find out about the true nature of his conception and began seeing himself as a burden to Invincible, with his twisted worship of him turning into a seething hatred. He began comparing himself with Terra, whom Mark seemingly loved more than him and actually allowed to live with him.

Confrontation with his Father

Decades later, Marky would eventually have enough and somehow track his father down on space. He would engage with him on a brutal confrontation, where Marky admitted to having the full intention to kill him. Although eventually he came to his senses and was subdued, Marky apologized to his father and admitted that he felt like he was forever doomed to be "bad" due to being born out of a sexual assault.

Mark reassures his son, telling him that he was mistaken; he did not leave him on Earth to get rid of him, but to allow him to have a normal life just like he had, and that he was proud for everything he had done for the Earth. Mark tells him that, with enough time, which they had a nearly unlimited amount of, they would endure and see past this misunderstanding as a family.

Although the resolution of Marky's plotline isn't seen, it is heavily implied that he was accepted into the royal family and became an active agent of the Viltrum Empire.

Trivia

  • Markus' suit is heavily reminiscent of Target Mark's, an Alternate Mark Grayson seen during the Invincible War. Given how Art already had his suit planned out, it's likely that it was based on a scrapped design for Invincible's original suit that Target Mark happened to get.
