~ Ryan to John Kramer. |
Ryan is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Logan Nelson) of the 2017 film Jigsaw, he's a part of the very first group of subject John Kramer tested.
He was potrayed by Paul Braunstein.
Biography
Jigsaw
Background
When Ryan was young, he was a very extroverted person who drank with friends until long hours of nights. One day, while in a moving car with two of his friends, Ryan tried to get out via the hood. His best friend who was driving, tried to pull Ryan back in which made lose control of the vehicle sending it into another moving car. Ryan managed to get out before both cars exploded killing his friends and the other passengers.
He was the only survivor and knowing this - he lied arguing that the fault was in his friend driving the car rather than taking the blame when interrogated by police. However, despite lying about it, the guilt caused him to resorted to committing minor crimes such as selling credits that could not be paid, selling cocaine, not paying state taxes, and cheating on his two wives.
Because of Ryan's dishonesty, criminality, and murders, he was chosen by Jigsaw to be involved in his first game along with 4 others. Eventually, he was abducted and subdued by John Kramer and taken to the Tuck's Pig Farm along with the other test subjects with a bucket placed on his head.
Trials of the Murderers
Five victims wake up in a metal room inside a barn, chained by the neck. A recording from John explains that to escape, they must offer a blood sacrifice. As saws activate, pulling them toward danger, Anna quickly realizes only small cuts are needed. Following her lead, Ryan slashes his arm, freeing himself and the others as they are dragged into the next room.
Still bound, the group is confronted by a puppet displaying the word “Confess.” A tape reveals that Carly once stole an asthmatic woman’s purse, leading to her death. When she refuses to confess, syringes drop from the ceiling—one containing an antidote, another saline, and the last a deadly acid. As the chains begin to lift them, Ryan panics and stabs Carly with all three, inadvertently killing her but securing their freedom.
Desperate to escape, Ryan ignores a warning and steps into a razor-wire trap, shredding his leg. Meanwhile, Anna and Mitch become trapped in a grain silo set to bury them unless Ryan pulls a lever. Torn between saving them and preserving his leg, Ryan finally relents, freeing them but losing his limb in the process.
In the final test, a gravely wounded Ryan and Anna face John Kramer himself. He reveals that Anna murdered her infant and framed her husband, leading to his death. Placing a loaded gun between them, he declares it the "key" to survival. Anna, misinterpreting his message, shoots at Ryan—only for the gun to backfire, killing her instantly.
Death
After the test ended and Anna died Ryan begins to cry upon realizing that the keys to their chains were hidden inside of the gun, and destroyed when Anna attempted to shoot him with it. He notices that the green key coordinating with Anna's green lock has been bent and out of use and his coordinating yellow key and lock has been split in half. With no hope of escape, Ryan eventually dies of either dehydration or blood loss.
Post-Mortem
Ryan and Anna's corpses are decomposing in the Tuck's Pig Farm where John Kramer put them to the test with a 10 year+ time stamp as Logan.
Trivia
- Ryan shares his name with a minor character in The Final Chapter.
- Many commented that Ryan's death is extremely unfair as: after everything he had done, showing significant amount of remorse and choose to be a selfless person, he is left to suffer the consequences from Anna's actions instead, which put questions to John Kramer's morality system into question if it truly is genuine.
