Detective Eric Matthews is one of the main protagonists of the Saw franchise. Serving as the main protagonist of Saw 2. A supporting character in Saw 3 and a Major character in Saw 4.

He's portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg who also played Detective Lipton in Dead Silence.

History

Eric is a cop that is pulled into the Jigsaw case when one of his informants is killed in a Jigsaw trap. Likewise, he has a lot of trouble keeping his temper under control, which damages his relationship with his son and might account for his habit of rigging investigations to guarantee convictions. Later on, Jigsaw kidnapped his son. Eric was extremely worried and didn't hesistate to get him back by any means necessary. Unfortunately, all that was required of him was to be patient.

The entire pogression of the interrigotiation make Eric losing his temper, while Kerry wanted to assist and ensure his mind, his co-workers try to isolate both Mathews with the killer instead. When he saws his son is on the verge of being killed, Eric beats up John Kramer, force the serial killer to lead him to where his son is. When they arrives, Eric was warned by John but he ignores it, charging inside and tries to sreach for Daniel. Unfortunately, he encountered a fight with Amanda and was trapped inside the bathroom, where he discover the corpse of Adam. Eric smashes his foot from his chains and find Amanda again, this time almost killing her, but failed to as he falls down and chant "You're a not Jigsaw!" to raise the anger.

He was then later trapped, totured for 5 months by Hoffman, who brought him out to play another game. He wanted to kill himself, but then discovers that his collegue, Daniel Rigg is on his trial to save him and the two others. Eric was given a choice, he choose not to sucuide but instead prevent Rigg from killing all of them. However, Rigg hot headed nature leads him to charge to the door. Eric tries to shot Rigg to stop him, but failed to as the ice blocks crushes his head.

Trivia

  • Likewise, him and Marcus Banks are the only two Saw heroes to be authorities throughout the in-story series who had a lot of arrogance and wrathfulness throughout their out of control behavior that would eventually cost them their allies, families, and their own lives making them tragic fallen heroes, corrupt officials, and overall anti-heroes.
