He was portrayed by Andy Serkis
History
Kino's life before incarceration is unknown as is the reason for his arrest. By the time of Cassian's Incarceration at Narkina 5 in 5BBY, Kino only had two hundred and forty-nine days remaining of his sentence and he served as the floor manager of Unit Five-Two-D. Kino was the one to introduce Andor to the way the prison operates, assigning him to Table Five.
Later on, as the inmates were heading back to their cells, A brief discussion would begin between the inmates regarding the Empire's new Public Order Resentencing Directive and the recent heist on Aldhani, Kino would become angered by another inmate. Melshi, who told Andor that their sentence numbers didn't matter as they wouldn't leave anyway, Kino would order Melshi to stop talking and get aggressive towards him. Kino would then calm down and return to his cell. 31 shifts later, his night was interrupted by the sounds of electricity, as fellow prisoner Veemoss had committed suicide via the electric floors.
During their work the next day, Ulaf would suffer with an injured hand, Andor would switch places with him, earning praise from Kino. Later on as they were all heading back to their cells, Kino and his unit would be caught by an unexpected delay, as the other inmates began speculating what happened and communicating with the prisoners on other bridges, with mention of an incident on level 2. Kino would try to keep his men calm and quiet as the lights begin to go out, attempting to justify it as the power cutting out, eventually going on to dismiss his men back to the cells as the sirens blair. During the night, Andor would ask him if he'd ever planned escaping. Kino refused to answer, telling Andor that the best way to survive is to not think of escaping.
Later on during a shift, Ulaf would suffer from a stroke and collapse. By the time they had to return to their cells, Kino and Cassian would wait behind with Ulaf whilst waiting for a medic. Once the medic arrived, her announced that Ulaf had no chance of survival and asked for Kino and Cassian to hold him down for euthanisation, letting slip that no-one would be getting out of the prison. Both Cassian and Kino would ask if the medic knew what happened on level 2, and they would be told that the floor was zapped and 100 men were killed over a released prisoner being mistakenly sent to level 2 rather than a different prison, and were told that once they serve their sentence, they'll be transferred rather than freed. This information was enough for Kino to finally help Cassian with his escape attempt, informing him that the level was guarded by no more than twelve guards.
The next day, when Ulaf's replacement arrived, Kino and the inmates would strike. Cassian and Birnok would disable the lift as it was going down, while Kino and the other prisoners would throw whatever they could at the guards above. The guards retaliated by activating the electric floors, Kino ordered the inmates to get onto the tables and tried to do so himself but couldn't get up in time, fortunately Andor had caused a water leak which short circuited the floors, barely saving Kino who would then order the remaining prisoners to charge the elevator and climb up. After making their way up, Kino and Cassian make their way towards the command centre, taking the guards there hostage. Cassian forces the guard to shut off the floors and urges Kino to make a speech, Kino proceeds to speak over the intercom, telling the inmates that the floors have been shut down and the facility is under their control ultimately telling the inmates that there is one way out and they should make a run for the exits, helping anyone lost or disoriented. The two join up with the escaping prisoners and reach the exit, a large drop into a body of water, Kino reveals to Cassian that he can't swim, and as Cassian gets caught up in the crowd and falls into the water, Kino's fate is left unknown.
Quotes
“ | My name is Kino Loy. I'm the dayshift manager on Level Five. I'm speaking to you from the command center on Level Eight. We are, at this moment, in control of the facility...
(Cassian: Is that the best you got?) ...How long we hang on, how far we get, how many of us make it out, all of that is now up to us. We have deactivated every floor in the facility. All floors are cold. Wherever you are right now, get up, stop the work. Get out of your cells, take charge and start climbing. They don't have enough guards and they know it. If we wait until they figure that out, it'll be too late. We will never have a better chance than this, and I would rather die trying to take them down than giving them what they want. We know they fried a hundred men on Level Two. We know that they are making up our sentences as we go along. We know that no one outside here knows what's happening. And now we know, that when they say we are being released, we are being transferred to some other prison to go and die, and that ends today! There is one way out. Right now, the building is ours. You need to run, climb, kill! You need to help each other. You see someone who's confused, someone who's lost, you get them moving and you keep them moving until we put this place behind us. There are 5,000 of us. If we can fight half as hard as we've been working, we will be home in no time. One way out! One way out! One way out! |
