Arbiter-General Huaiyan, also known as the Flaming Heart, is a supporting character in the 2023 science fantasy turn-based tactical role-playing video game Honkai: Star Rail.
Huaiyan was the Arbiter-General and Furnace Master of the Xianzhou Zhuming, known as the "Flaming Heart." He was the oldest native of the Xianzhou Alliance, and the only one known to have an elderly appearance. A master craftsman, the Flaming Heart trained numerous talented artisans throughout the years. Despite his repeated attempts at retirement, Huaiyan always returned to duty when his wisdom and experience were required.
He is voiced by Haojia Li in Chinese, J. Michael Tatum in English, Jo Min-soo in Korean, and Tadashi Miyazawa in Japanese. Tatum also voiced Erwin Smith in Attack on Titan, Tenya Iida in My Hero Academia, Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist, Fuegoleon Vermillion in Black Clover, and Klein Sieben in RWBY.
Appearance
Despite being a human native of the Xianzhou Alliance, Huaiyan had an outwardly elderly appearance. He was short with a large round face, large ears, and a large round nose. His yellow eyes drooped downwards and he had bags under his eyelids. He had long light grey hair tied into a topknot, a long bushy beard, a bushy moustache, and bushy eyebrows.
Synopsis
Cursed Swords of Hanguang
Sometime after Yingxing's fall from grace, Huaiyan took on a pupil named Hanguang. Hanguang proved to be his most talented new artisan since Yingxing, and was immensely passionate and ambitious. He desired to create swords that could be used by anyone with complete mastery, regardless of their level of training. To that end, he forged blades and imbued heliobi into them. The heliobi inside Hanguang's swords could move independently of their wielders and, through their ability to absorb emotions, lend the skill and valor of their previous wielders to their current ones.
Hanguang's blades became famed across the cosmos for their potency, leading to him receiving many commissions. However, overtime the swords absorbed the anger and bloodlust exhibited by their owners on the battlefield. As such, they became "cursed swords" that infected their wielders with the negative emotions of their forebears. Despite the dark affect they could have, which became public knowledge, many foreigners still desired the power offered by Hanguang's cursed swords. The number of heliobus cursed swords Hanguang forged eventually reached 1382.
Inevitably, the continued creation of cursed swords led to disaster. One day, when the Flamewheel Forge was particularly busy with visitors from afar, the congealment of chaotic emotions present led to the cursed swords running rampant. A massacre ensued, with many master artisans and civilians being slaughtered. Even Hanguang and his partner were killed by the cursed swords. General Huaiyan managed to arrive on the scene just in time to save the life of Yunli, Hanguang's young daughter. The crisis was eventually averted, but not without significant casualties.
Raising Yunli
After the incident, Huaiyan decided to adopt the orphaned Yunli. He raised her as though she was his grandchild, dotting on her and training her in martial disciplines and craftsmanship. Yunli grew to resent her father for the catastrophe he caused, and resolved to hunt down and smelt every cursed sword he had forged. Though she lived to serve and protect the Zhuming, Yunli was a headstrong and opinionated child with a large appetite who caused Huaiyan frequent trouble.
Powers & Abilities
Powers
- Longevity: Like all humans native to the Xianzhou Alliance, Huaiyan was the possessor of a boon of longevity provided by the Aeon of Abundance Yaoshi. The boon of Abundance granted the people of the Xianzhou with biological immortality, meaning their aging process stopped upon reaching adulthood, though they could still be killed by external methods. However, as a result of their boon from Yaoshi, all Xianzhou humans inevitably succumbed to "mara," a degenerative mutation that caused the brain to deteriorate and cells to rapidly grow. Huaiyan was the oldest known Xianzhou human, having lived for thousands of years without succumbing to mara. Uniquely, he had an elderly appearance despite his biological immortality.
Abilities
- Leadership
- Master Artisanship
- Master Fighter
- Master Teacher: Huaiyan was an excellent teacher, having taken on and mentored countless apprentices over the millennia. Whenever he personally tutored an individual, regardless of the field, that protégé would go onto become one of the foremost practioniers of said field. For instance, those trained in martial disciplines by Huaiyan had a tendency to progress to the "Flamewheel Octet," an unofficial group of the Zhuming's top Cloud Knights, and those trained in artisanship often became the Furnace Masters of other Xianzhou ships.
