Hero Overview

Everything in this world runs in a loop… As for the truth… that’s on you to find out. So no matter how strange or spooky things might look on the surface, maybe all they point to in the end is a small and simple secret. In the end, I’m just the Moon. The real Sun is long gone.
~ Buer to the Traveler.
Wow, this place is hopping with activity. The sun shining makes the sandy beaches here glow like the embers of a Pyro Slime… And next to the cool, sparkly water, what a view! If only the desert sand and the jungle rain could get along like this, that would be perfect.
~ Buer upon visiting the Golden Apple Archipelago.

Buer, also known as the Dendro Archon, Nahida, Lesser Lord Kusanali, the Physic of Purity, and the God of Wisdom, is a major playable character in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.

Buer was the God of Wisdom and Dendro Archon who resided over the nation of Sumeru after the death of her predecessor Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. As the youngest of the Seven Archons, Buer was initially crushed by the expectations of her duty until she was forced to overcome her sense of inferiority in the face of adversity.

She is voiced by Ling Hua in Chinese, Park Shi-Yoon in Korean, Yukari Tamura in Japanese, and Kimberley Anne Campbell in English. Campbell also voiced Typhon in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and Hayase Nagatoro in Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro. Tamura also voiced Qiqi from the same game, Nanoha Takamachi from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha and Rika Furude from Higurashi: When They Cry.

Appearance

Despite her advanced age, and perhaps due to her status as being the youngest of the Archons, Buer tended to take the form of a female child. In her child form, she had pale skin, vibrant green eyes, and long pointed elf-like ears that drooped downwards slightly. Her long light silver hair had light green ends and was tied into a side ponytail on the left side of her head.

Personality

When the Traveler and Paimon first meet Nahida in the Sabzeruz Festival samsara, she presented herself as an elusive and secretive individual. She voluntarily left ruling the city to the sages, though like in cases with the samsara, she would intervene as best she could if they stepped out of line. She also suffered from very low self-esteem as a result of the way the sages treated her. However, following the downfall of the sages, their exile to Avidya Forest and the cleansing of Irminsul, many of these traits have either minimized or vanished. She now openly wanders around the city, when she has time, and interacts with her people and has an overall far more genuinely cheerful view of herself.

Despite her previously difficult circumstances, when she spoke to people she rarely revealed her sadness. She almost always maintains a gentle and kind demeanour when she speaks to others, and treats everyone as equals. However, she admits that her social skills and understanding of human interaction needs work, and she's prone to slightly eccentric speech and behaviour as a result. She also professes a fondness for analogies and frequently makes use of them when attempting to explain things to others. Like many in Sumeru, she believes in helping people come to answers on their own, particularly regarding heavier truths, rather than providing all the answers. As a result she's also prone to peppering her speech with a mixture of analogies and subtle clues about things she wants others to learn. As the God of Wisdom, Nahida's most notable traits are her exceptional intelligence, knowledge, and planning. She's capable of creating extremely thorough, multi-layered plans and can even be a little manipulative if the situation calls for it. She's also capable of making plans in a pinch, as shown when she bartered with Dottore. Perhaps most of all, Nahida is skilled at realizing when her intelligence is required and when her kindness is required, or both.

History

Creation

Buer is the reincarnation of the late Rukkhadevata, the original Dendro Archon. During the Cataclysm 500 years ago, an abundance of monsters spawned from the Abyss had ravaged the entire Teyvat. Rukkhadevata did not participated in the war between Khaenri'ah and the Gods, instead she went to protect the Irminsul, a white tree connected to the Ley Lines of the world and the source of the Dendro element's power. The Cataclysm had caused a great distress to Rukkhadevata, in which the forbidden knowledge which invaded the roots had already corrupted her mind despite the numerous attempts to purge its impurities.

In a last ditch attempt, the only way for her to end the impurities is to eliminate her very own existence. Before her death, she created a reincarnation of herself albeit in a form of a young girl known as Kusanali by cultivating the purest branch of Irminsul, wanting the world to forget of her. After the birth of Buer, she was eventually discovered by jealous Akademiya Sages who placed her within the Sanctuary of Surasthana to be imprisoned for 500+ years to the present upon realizing that she didn’t had the potential strength that matched for creator and predecessor, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. However, Kusanali's confinement didn't completely stop her from being able to physically interact with the world since she had the ability to project herself into other peoples' dreams. A few instances of this had been recorded, such as saving Aaru Village by granting the exiled scholar village keepers her powers, reducing the damage it took from earthquakes.

Meeting the Traveler and Dunyarzad

Nahida first met the Traveler when they were looking for Dunyarzad Homayeni in the Birmastan medical ward. They have the Traveler use Canned Knowledge containing a day's worth of events involving the samsara, which the Traveler was trying to escape from, while Nahida tries to delay Dunyarzad's illness. Failing to find information, they enlist Dehya's help and take her to see Dunyarzad. The Traveler explains the situation, allowing Dehya to make a connection involving the samsara to the Akasha terminals, which can extract information from the subconsciousnesses of others to create a singular hive mind as one pleases. Although they weren't completely out of the woods cutting off their terminals, they still notice that the Akasha had to be involved. Nahida brings the Traveler to Dehya who points out they were currently inside a dream state as Dehya points out that the sages can't replicate her swordsmanship in each loop. The following morning, the Traveler tried to leave the city, failing to return while their memories of it were erased upon exiting the boundaries, with Nahida modifying the Traveler's Akasha Terminal the day after.

After that, Nahida notices that Dunyarzad was nearly killed by the dream harvesting, but gives the Traveler a solution to escape the samsara, by finding the host of the dream and waking them up. Nahida plans to leave the city with the dreams in hand but doesn't specify even more. They head to the stage of the Dance of Sabzeruz to look for Nilou, and pointed out the original colored Padisarahs in front of her, unintentionally waking her up from the dream, also caused by the Traveler attempting to stop the Sages leading to them freezing revealing that they were just puppets as they wouldn't subject themselves to the samsara cycle. The Traveler wakes up in the real world to find Dunyarzad starting to get better with a Nahida-controlled Katheryne, where she reveals that she returned with a fragment of Dunyarzad's consciousness upon walking out to the city which was too weak to be harvested by the Akasha, so she exhausted her power to sustain it until the samsara was broken, leading to Nahida to investigate what caused the sages to step out of line. She reveals that Dunyarzad had been suffering from Eleazar, which could only be dispelled by fixing the Irminsul's withering.

The Contingency

Nahida begins her plan to dig out the Sages' secrets, first by going through one of their closest subordinates, Setaria, a scholar from desert side that had guilt from having to work for the sages and their inability to help them. Planning to make Setaria reflect on her guilt, she takes them to her colleagues and gives the Traveler her powers to take control of one of them. Posing as a believer of King Deshret, they find out that the resurrection of the deceased deity was a misinformation campaign to trap unsuspecting people into having their dreams harvested for the Sages' God-Creation Plan. Before Setaria could inform on the trio for their "heretics," the Traveler takes control of one of the members, forcing them to admit their guilt, as well as making her spill out information that the former outcast Zandik/Il Dottore had set foot in Sumeru. With The Doctor now knowing of what happens, he controls all the peoples' Akasha Terminals, only to be tranquilized by the Dendro Archon. Shortly before The Doctor recaptures Nahida, she burned the solutions to overthrow the corrupt Sages in the Traveler's mind, saying: "Even in a moonless night, a shower of starlight can still drown out illusions and lies." This prompts the Traveler to set out for the Great Red Sand and seek help from the Eremites.

Rescue from Confinement and Battling the False God

The Traveler, with the assistance of the two Akademiya officials who opposed the Sages, Alhaitham and Cyno, Isak, the Eremites led by Dehya, team up to rescue the Dendro Archon after finding out that her very presence is to save Irminsul after it was contaminated with forbidden knowledge through Rukkhadevata; Alhaitham designs a modified terminal made to communicate with Nahida and arranges the Traveler's arrest, allowing them to free Nahida, then obfuscates insanity to placed a modified fake order they created with some lost tools, setting the sages on a blind pursuit for Kusanali, Isak leads the guards to an ambush placed by Dehya and her rallied Eremites, after Nilou activates the order by performing at the Akademiya's entrance, culminating in Cyno apprehending Azar in the Sanctuary of Surasthana, leading to Nahida's release. Dehya picks up the Traveler from the Sanctuary of Surasthana. With the plan a success, the Traveler visits Nahida, who now knowing of the full degree of the damage, revokes the Sages' access to the Akasha. Remarking on the intricacy behind the Akasha Terminal, Nahida creates a bigger one to help communicate with the false god's consciousness and reach them. Therefore, the Traveler and Nahida go to the factory to look for the operator of the false god, Scaramouche. Upon them finding the machine, Scaramouche challenges them to a fight.

Before the second phase, Nahida reveals that she had trapped Scaramouche in the samsara, using the data from almost everyone in Sumeru to empower a huge-sized Akasha terminal to attack the boss. The Traveler manages to overpower the false god, allowing Nahida to obtain the Electro Gnosis, causing a desperate Scaramouche to fall off the machine. With both Gnoses in hand, Nahida reveals her predecessor's last memory to prepare to clean her from Irminsul.

Erasure of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata and Bargain with Il Dottore

The Traveler steps into Rukkhadevata's final memory in Irminsul, with Nahida being to surprised to see it in an extremely contaminated state. They manage to head to Rukkhadevata’s consciousness, after the Traveler explains the Forbidden Knowledge to her which she connects to the Cataclysm and Deshret. Meeting the Greater Lord's lucid consciousness, they found out that Rukkhadevata had to be erased from Irminsul to put an end to the Forbidden Knowledge, after she explained how and why Kusanali was created in the first place. Nahida complies to erasing her creator off the records of Irminsul, therefore removing her from Teyvat's history. As a result, the Irminsul network in Sumeru is finally cleaned, and people are able to dream again, and forbidden knowledge is removed for good.

Returning to the real world, Il Dottore puts the Traveler to sleep and Nahida bargains with him; knowing that she can’t take on The Doctor, she threatens to destroy the Electro Gnosis to invoke the Heavenly Principles. Dottore falls for the trick, but Nahida plans to let him take the Electro Gnosis as long as he wipes out his other segments as it would bring disaster to Sumeru, to which he complies. He offers information about the sky in Teyvat being fake in exchange for her Gnosis. The Traveler would be invited to a victory celebration for the overthrowing of the corrupt sages and for saving the entire Sumeru region. Now being the Dendro Archon from the first place, she possesses the Traveler’s body to speak to the group, but would arrive in person much later. The next day, Nahida orders the Traveler to go to Fontaine and speak with its Archon, also revealing that the Traveler is Teyvat’s fourth descender while their twin is recorded in Irminsul through their visit in Khaenri’ah despite not originating from Teyvat either, promising to help them regardless of inquiries.

Interlude Chapter

Scaramouche, now under the Dendro Archon's custody, requests Nahida to erase information about himself from Irminsul, knowing that he had lived his entire life under a great misunderstanding stemming all the way from his second betrayal involving Niwa. So, Nahida and the Traveler take a trip down Irminsul to analyse the former Harbinger's memories. After watching what happened, the Wanderer plans to hunt down The Doctor for ruining his life completely, and asks Nahida to erase his past, causing him to return as the Wanderer, the player was tasked to teleport to Inazuma to monitor the changes. After their discovery revealed that the former Harbinger's actions were instead attributed to other factors alongside the events surrounding them, they return to Nahida who reveals that she had a back up of the true story behind the Wanderer, kept as an allegorical tale, which she made prior to his erasure. Now ready to confront his own past, the Wanderer re-emerges with an Anemo Vision and finally accepts who he is, returning to his old personality. The Traveler returns from Irminsul with the opportunity to name the player's Wanderer, who resumes his personal journey to find closure in his struggles.

Story Quests

After the shutdown of the Akasha System, scholar Moseis found himself confined in his own dream world after the Jnana Energy supply to his dream that contained the projection of his late wife who died from Eleazar, Emira which was made in his attempts to create a hyper-realistic interactive character. To his surprise however, he realized that he could drain the Jnana Energy off his subjects and harvest their dreams to sustain his reality through his "A Moment of Dreams" operation. When his test subjects would sleepwalk and get themselves in danger while empowering Moseis' dreams, Nahida joins the Traveler to investigate. While his subjects initially agreed with their offer to live with a dream copy of their deceased associates, Nahida refutes saying that he violated one of the sins of the Akademiya, leading to them to start waking from the dream, making it grow unstable. Moseis tried to overwhelm the group more and more monsters, but the instability led to the dream's projections turning into even more monsters including Emira. Nahida and the Traveler defeat them; and a defeated Moseis demands Nahida to leave him for dead in the dream world, but she refuses to comply saying that he won’t escape his punishment so easily. His consciousness was extracted from the dream and would be returned to his real body via Knowledge Capsule, now in the hands of the Matra.

A message of help in the form of a Dendro-imbued object descends in the Sanctuary of Surasthana, putting Nahida on a journey meeting several Elemental life forms taking on the appearances of Fungi, one of which has a void that had to be recovered from to which she revives. The Fungus-like lifeform sends its fellows away, revealing that they were once part of a race of elemental species that lived until the Cataclysm, learning that the forbidden knowledge was involved in the apocalypse. They rescued more of the fellow Fungi lifeforms, revealing that the tainted elemental lifeforms eventually turned into Withering Zones. Eventually, they reached their own "home" which turned out to be the Dendro Dragon Sovereign Apep, the former ruler of Sumeru who didn’t agree with Archon rule by the end of the Archon War; who was already tainted by Forbidden Knowledge, in which its removal left a void within. They followed the Fungus mimics to The Chasm, where they witness them turning back into Oozing Concretions due to the Chasm Nail. Through a Grounded Geoshroom which made a deal with the Dendro Archon to protect the Fire-Seed they met, they obtain a Fire-Seed to restore Apep's heart. On the way to Apep’s Oasis, Nahida however uses the Fire-Seed on a group of organisms, leading to them congregating at the form of a Grounded Hydroshroom. Arriving at Apep's Oasis, they successfully purified the dragon by destroying the corrupt guardian entity inside of it. Apep explains to them his side of the story and how he came to inherit the forbidden knowledge, despite maintaining hostility to Nahida with the sacrifice of the Hydro Fungus mimic. The chapter ends on Nahida tending to the surviving Fungi mimics.

Powers & Abilities

Powers

  • God Physiology: Buer was one of the gods of Teyvat, an enigmatic race of beings who ruled over the human realm. The Seven Archons, all of whom were gods, drew strength from the worship of their followers and by extension the amount of control they exerted upon their subjects. Generally speaking, gods were tremendously powerful lifeforms who, at their full might, were virtually impossible for mortals to defeat one-on-one in a fight. However, due to her relative youth and her long absence from activity, Buer was a weaker combatant than other gods and even some mortals.
    • Dendrokinesis: All gods were able to harness immense amounts of elemental energy without the aid of an external source of power like a Vision. As the Dendro Archon, Buer was able to harness the power of the Dendro element to conjure and telekinetically manipulate plant life as well as to create Dendro energy, which she could use for a variety of purposes such as creating energy constructs.
    • Flight: By coating her body in Dendro energy and telekinetically manipulating it, Lesser Lord Kusanali was able to lift herself up into the air and levitate.
    • Immortality: The gods of Teyvat are blessed with longevity when compared to mortals, with the oldest known example being over six thousand years old. Kusanali, the youngest of the Seven Archons, was at least five hundred years old. Even when a god was killed, their willpower would remain imprinted on the world. The eternal nature of the gods was limited however, as a naturally-occurring process called erosion had the potential to gradually erode their minds until they inevitably lost their senses of self.

Trivia

  • Like the other gods of Teyvat, Buer was named after a demon detailed in the Ars Goetia, one of the five books that comprised the demonology grimoire The Lesser Key of Solomon. Buer was ranked tenth among the seventy-two demons described in the book and was one of the twelve Presidents of Hell. Commanding fifty demonic legions, Buer was a teacher of natural and moral philosophy as well as the usefulness of herbs and plants. He was also capable of healing the weaknesses of humans.
  • The name "Kusanali" likely references the "Kusanali-Jātaka," one of 547 poems chronicled in the Jataka tales that detail the previous births of Guatama Buddha. A tree sprite was encountered in the Kusanali-Jātaka.
  • Prior to Version 2.1 of Genshin Impact, the God of Wisdom was erroneously referred to using male pronouns rather than female pronouns in several localizations, including English.
  • Nahida’s Chinese and Japanese voice actresses both also voiced Theresa Apocalypse, a character from the video game Honkai Impact 3rd which, like Genshin Impact, was developed by miHoYo. Additionally, Nahida and Theresa Apocalypse have similar designs, as they are both characters with white hair and a small stature.
    • Nahida first banner with come with Naganohara Yoimiya's rerun. This could be Mihoyo make a dark humor to Zhuge Kongming (a Bubble-universe version of Theresa) death loop. One of her dead figure has her lifeless eyes show a reflection of firework, which in this case refer as Yoimiya, the firework maker.
    • Like Nahida being the reincarnation of Rukkhadevata, Theresa is also a clone of the late Kallen Kaslana in hopes of reincarnating her.
    • Nahida’s Japanese voice actress, Yukari Tamura, also voices Qiqi in Genshin Impact while her Chinese voice actress, Hua Ling also voices Klee.
  • Nahida is the first character to openly cry with tears on sceen.
  • The decoration between petals resemble Arabic letter nun (ن), which is an acronym for Nahida (Persian: ناهید Nahid).
