Trading is a menu action a character can take in most Fire Emblem games.
Overview
All units have a limited inventory for them to bring various Weapons and Items to battle. Trading allows two units to reorganize their inventories with one another, swapping and/or giving items between two allies with no requirement of equivalent exchange.
As a Command action, Trading will cause the unit that initiates the command to use their turn. The initiating unit and their trading partner must be adjacent to each other to be able to use this command and the initiating unit can trade with both active units and units on standby. Completing a Trade does not immediately end the units turn. In some games, after Trading, a unit may still be able to attack, use an item, and use certain other commands. Movement is usually not allowed after Trading unless a Canto effect is applied to a character.
Trading can also be done between units who are being rescued and (in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 only) enemy units you've captured. Enemies in Thracia 776 could also trade items with each other although this is only at very rare times. In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, enemies trade usually vulneraries when they have low HP.
Trading is mainly used for the following tactics:
- Trading various healing items such as Vulneraries to injured allies
- Giving items Dropped by enemies to more applicable allies.
- Changing a unit on standby's weapon to a different one by reorganizing their inventory.
- Spreading the use of unique weapons and staves, allowing certain ones to be use multiple times.
