The Axe is a melee weapon that sports a shorter reach, greater durability, and does a lot more damage than a Board With Nails.

Crafting it requires an Axe Blade, which is rarely found in containers and chests throughout the map, or more conveniently, can be bought from Vendors. An Axe can be found in the destroyed house on the way to Doctor's House.

Strategy

The Axe is the melee weapon with the highest damage dealt per hit. It is capable of killing a Huge Dog in one hit and killing most enemies in two hits.

With Sharpened, an Axe can easily execute a dormant Red Chomper in two hits before it can attack. Note that one extra hit is needed to finish off the upper body.

As with the Shovel, Better Materials and Sturdy Blade upgrade effects are cumulative, not just additive, making the Axe approximately 5 times more durable than one without upgrades.

Except for the Staff, The Three sell all components required for crafting the weapon, though it takes three days to purchase enough Tape. However you can find an axe in the Doctor's house, you should almost never have to craft one as this is available before workbench level 6.

Trivia

  • One Axe lies inside the locked chest near Wolfman camp. Combination is random and must be manually guessed or hacked by looking for "combination" inside the save file.
  • Prior to Alpha 8.0, the Axe and Shovel had identical crafting and upgrade requirements other than the edge, so the player had a choice of primary weapon once they reached that point. Currently, the Axe now requires a workbench level that can't be reached until Chapter 2, while Shovel has been made into a much slower weapon.
