Marion

Marion is a railway steam shovel from The Island of Sodor who helps co-manage Cliffstone Centre Quarry.

Personality

Marion is an enormously enthusiastic steam shovel hailing from the Clay Pits of Brendam! A self-propelling railway shovel, Marion's favorite thing to do is digging...with her second favorite thing being talking about digging! Her talkative and high energy ways may get on the engines nerves at times, but she's got a heart as big as her bucket! While she can make a mistake or two, she is very competent at her important and dangerous work on the railway, and her digging and organizing expertise (she is able to shunt with her front and shift heavy rock and slates to be shipped off to sea with her shovel after all) makes her the perfect co-leader of the Cliffstone Centre Quarry crew!

Technical Details

Basis

Marion is based on a rail mounted Marion Model 40 Revolving Steam Shovel. However, unlike Marion, the actual steam shovels were not self-propelled. Many of these steam shovel types were used in the construction of the Panama Canal, with some of them still in place at the bottom of portions of the canals and reservoir that provide water to the canal and locks.

The only remaining steam shovel is a Model 91, which was taken out of service in 1949. It resides in Le Roy, New York, USA on caterpillar treads.
