“ | 4 new tracks including the EXTREME Tar Pits and 2 Daily Challenge Vaults have just been added to Bloons TD 5! From Beginner to Extreme, two of them available in Co-op mode, there's a bunch of new content to fill up time over the Christmas break. | ” |
~ Ninja Kiwi's description |
Tar Pits is an Extreme track in Bloons TD 5. It is unlocked at Rank 60 in the Flash version, or Rank 50 in other versions.
Overview
Tar Pits consists of five circular pits of tar, all surrounding a large body of water. Each path starts from within a tunnel, circles one of the pits, and exits into the same tunnel, creating five short, disconnected paths across the map.
In the Flash version, the Bloons alternate between taking the paths clockwise and anticlockwise every other round, and towers can be placed inside the tar. In the Mobile version, the Bloons only take the path clockwise and towers cannot be placed inside the tar.

Trivia

- This is arguably the hardest track in the entire series due to its high number of short paths. In the Mobile version, it is even harder due to the fact that towers cannot be placed inside the tar.
- Other candidates for hardest track are Bloontonium Lab, Monkeys vs. Bloons, Triangle of Insanity, Down the Drain, Crypt Keeper (without Reverse Mode), Bloody Puddles, and Ravine.
- Due to its difficulty, and before its addition to Bloons TD 6, many theorized it would be impossible to clear on C.H.I.M.P.S. in BTD6 due to its severely short tracks across a wde range. Eventually, it received a spiritual successor in Spa Pits, which contains a secret that restores the track to its BTD5 Mobile variant. As expected, C.H.I.M.P.S difficulty is currently impossible.
- Beating the map in its secret form and with NAPSFRILLS rulesets would also earn the player a hidden achievement, albeit with some looser restrictions.
- This track makes a cameo in the background of stages in Helium Heights in Bloons Supermonkey 2 Mobile.
- One of the developers said that this map was almost impossible to complete NAPS on Hard difficulty.
- Technically speaking, it is possible to complete the track on Hard NAPS by using free towers from Quests, as the original definition of the challenge does not take free towers into account. However, it has never been completed without free towers.
- Tar Pits (as the secret form of the BTD6 map Spa Pits) is one of the few BTD5 maps to return to BTD6, along with Park Path.
- This is one of the two tracks which has both five entrances and exits. The other one is Bloody Puddles.
