Red Bloon Types
Lead Bloon Types

Bloons are the main "enemies" in the Bloons Games.

In Bloons and its sequels, all bloons, Red, Blue, Green and Yellow (and also Pink in Bloons 2 Spring Fling) will pop with one hit by a projectile, no matter which color. Some bloons also activate special abilities, such as spewing a spray of 8 tacks (Tack Bloon) or releasing a bloon trapped from a glass jar (Helium Bloon).

In the Bloons Tower Defense Games and Bloons Super Monkey as well as Bloons Pop!, Bloons come in different layers, taking multiple hits to pop them depending on layer except red bloons. Bloon is a play/pun on the word Balloon. Beginning in Bloons TD 5, and extending to Bloons Monkey City and BTD Battles, bloons are able to spawn with two different types of abnormal statuses, Camo and Regrow. BTD6 added Fortified to the list of possible statuses. These make bloons harder to pop and bloons can have any combination of statuses they can have individually, or none at all.

  • Camo: Can only be hit by Towers that are stated as having Camo detection, either by default or through upgrades. DDTs have a similar property by default, and BTD4 had a specific Camo bloon instead of the Camo property.
  • Regrowth: After losing layers, will regenerate layers to full health over time. Cannot apply to blimp layers, even in the case of the DDT.
  • Fortified: Allows the Bloon to take extra damage before its outermost layer gets popped. Only applies to specific bloon types such as Lead, Ceramic, and MOAB-Class Bloons.

Each Bloon may contain special Bloon Properties that give them special properties, such as immunity to certain attacks or possessing more health than normal. Different Bloon types also have different Bloon Speeds, moving faster than, slower than, or equal to the speed of the standard Red Bloon. Unlike most enemies of other tower defense games, Bloon Layers are the underlying structure of "health" of most bloon types, except multi-HP bloons such as Ceramic Bloons and MOAB-Class Bloons.

As of October 2021, there are 130+ different types of Bloons.

Quick Answers

What are the different types of Bloons in the Bloons Games? toggle section
In the Bloons games, there are more than 130 unique Bloon types. The Bloons Tower Defense series uses color to denote different Bloon layers, quantified by the Red Bloon Equivalent (RBE), indicating the hits a Bloon and its 'children' can endure. Notable Bloon types include Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Pink, Black, White, Purple, Lead, Zebra, Rainbow, Ceramic, MOAB, BFB, and ZOMG Bloons.

What special abilities do some Bloons have in the game? toggle section
Activated abilities, or special abilities, first appeared in Bloons TD 5. These abilities enable towers to execute special attacks or provide assistance, controlled by the player. Some abilities have a duration, while others have instant effects like freezing all bloons on screen. Notable abilities include the Portable Lake Pro's tentacle that lashes bloons, and the Ninja Monkey's ability to duplicate itself. Each ability requires a cooldown period post-use.

What happens when a Bloon is hit by a projectile in the Bloons Games? toggle section
In the Bloons games, the effect of a projectile hitting a Bloon varies. A Spiky Bloon releases a bouncing spiked ball when popped, which may trigger a chain reaction. A Frozen Bloon emits a unique sound when hit by a non-damaging attack. Additionally, Bloons can be sacrificed, sold, or transformed into a Paragon.

What is the role of Bloons in Bloons Tower Defense Games? toggle section
In the Bloons Tower Defense series, Bloons serve as the primary opponents. The games' main objective is to halt Bloons from reaching the exit by popping them with monkey-based towers. Bloons may have unique abilities, adding an extra challenge to the gameplay. The franchise, originally a single-player browser game, has grown into a comprehensive series with sequels, spin-offs, and mobile versions.

What is the significance of the different colors of Bloons in the game? toggle section
In Bloons, each Bloon color signifies different speeds and difficulty levels. Blue Bloons, appearing from Round 3, are faster and tougher to pop than Red Bloons. Green Bloons, first seen in Round 6, surpass Blue Bloons in speed. Yellow Bloons are the game's fastest, while Black Bloons, matching Green Bloons in speed, resist bombs. White Bloons bear similarity to Black Bloons. In Bloons Pop 3, popping occurs when three or more Bloons of the same color match, leading to chain reactions.

Bloons Tower Defense series

THE ONE

The Bloons Tower Defense series introduces bloons in a different way to pop them. Unlike the Bloons in previous Bloons games, different colors of bloons contain different layers of bloons, represented by a term called Red Bloon Equivalent (RBE). The Red Bloon Equivalent of a bloon is how many hits the bloon and its "children" can take before being completely destroyed. For example, a Red Bloon has an RBE of 1, but a Blue Bloon contains a Red Bloon, meaning its RBE is 2. A Green Bloon contains a Blue Bloon which contains a Red Bloon, so its RBE is 3 and so on. Starting from Black Bloons, White Bloons, and Purple Bloons, each bloon may contain at least two children once the individual layer is popped.

Below are the different layers of Bloons in the Bloons Tower Defense:

Abilities

Camo Bloons

In Bloons Tower Defense 4, the Camo Bloon was a unique bloon type of RBE 11 (the in-game RBE says 9 and it takes away 9 lives rather than 11 when leaked), containing 2 Pink Bloons, and can be "accidentally" popped by towers without camo detection. In Bloons TD 5, however, any bloon lesser than a M.O.A.B. may have a camo attribute. Bloons Monkey City has the D.D.T., which is a fast-moving, camo, explosion-immune, MOAB-class bloon. Any bloon with this attribute may only be targeted by certain towers unless under the influence of a 0/2 Monkey Buccaneer with the Tier 3 Pirate Cove building, Radar Scanner Monkey Village or the BTD5 Special Agent Meerkat. First camo bloon comes at round 24 (it is a green in BTD5).

There are three types of tower that can pop Camos without upgrades: the Ninja Monkey, the Dartling Gun and the Spike Factory. Other towers may require upgrades to detect Camo Bloons, or require assistance of a Radar Scanner close by. You can remove the camo status with a X/3 Mortar Tower, a tier 4 Ice Fortress, foam from an 3/X Engineer, a 3/X Sub when submerged, or a projectile from a Ninja upgraded to Counter-Espionage. Unlike in BTD4, even if the splash damage from an explosion or a projectile with enough pierce hits a Camo Bloon, it won't be popped unless the tower in question has Camo detection.

Regrow Bloons

In Bloons TD 5, any bloon under the rank of a M.O.A.B. may have this attribute which causes them to gain back lost layers over time (hence its name). Ceramics do not regrow their outer shell one layer at a time, instead they regrow the entire shell in one go, and cannot regenerate a damaged shell.

No layers over its original may be gained. Bloons on a higher tier than Pink may multiply, unless on a late round where Freeplay rules exist. For instance, a Black Bloon gets popped into 2 pinks, which turn into 2 blacks, and if both get popped they become 4 pinks, and so on. This caused a problem where players could get infinite amounts of money by using Tempest Tornado wizards to endlessly pop and blow back bloons which they regrew into more bloons and had a strong defense in the back (like a Sun God) to avoid losing the game. This was called Regen Farming and was fixed in an update for BTD5 Flash and also for BMC Flash. It is still possible to do on Deluxe and iOS Versions of Bloons TD 5, but this method of Regrow Farming was never was possible in Bloons TD 6 and was mostly patched for Bloons Adventure Time TD in later updates.

A form of regen farming that does not exploit glitches or bugs is the use of Tempest Tornado and the Supply Drop ability. As long as the bloons are not completely destroyed and the round is dragged out so that the ability will continue to recharge, this will help players gain large amounts of in-game cash fairly easily. Note that Regrow Farming is far less effective in BTD6 due to the fact that income-producing abilities have a cap in usages per round, have full initial cooldowns for such abilities, and are capped in a 3-minute time basis per round.

In Bloons TD Battles 1, if the player sends a MOAB-Class bloon with the regrow property, the child ceramics will contain regrow, but no child MOAB-Class will possess regrow properties itself.

Fortified Bloons

FortifiedIcon

In Bloons TD 6, a bloon that is a Lead, Ceramic, or a M.O.A.B. Class Bloon, may have have a fortified attribute which allows bloons to have "armor" that allows them to take more hits to pop. The Fortified layer of an ordinary bloon does not pass on to its children when popped. For example, a Fortified Ceramic Bloon pops into two normal Rainbow Bloons, as Rainbow Bloons cannot have the Fortified ability, and they do not regenerate the fortified property when they become ceramics again. M.O.A.B. Class Bloons can also be Fortified, making them much stronger and generally more dangerous. Fortified MOAB-Class Bloons can pass on their Fortified ability to its children, until its Fortified Ceramic Bloons from them are popped.

In version 1.0 of Bloons TD 6, purple bloons could be fortified due to an oversight, though they only came out in freeplay after round 100. Fortified purples were removed in version 2.0.

Zombie Bloons

Low qualtiy zombie bloon icon placeholder

First appearing in Bloons Adventure Time TD, a zombie bloon is another type of bloon. When a zombie bloon is popped, it will leave behind a gravestone at the location where the red bloon layer was popped. During the next round the gravestone will release a non-zombie version of the base bloon at its location. The new bloon can have camo, regrow, and fortified properties as well. The zombie bloon somewhat returns in Bloons TD 6 as an unpopped bloon for the Necromancers: Unpopped army and the Prince of Darkness upgrade for the wizard monkey (X-X-4+). Unlike the zombie bloons, the unpopped bloon will work for the monkeys instead of against the monkeys.

Shielded Bloons

BATTDRegrowShield

First appearing in Bloons Adventure Time TD, shielded bloons are regular bloon variants that take a few hits to destroy their shielded layer, revealing the regular bloon once the shield layer has been destroyed. Just like their BSM2 counterparts, it makes bloons more durable, but unlike BSM2, they do not cause attacks to not pierce through them.

Ghost Bloons

Ghost Bloons

First (and exclusively) appearing in Bloons Adventure Time TD, ghost bloons are an attribute that prevents physical damage like swords and bombs from damaging the bloon. This attribute can also be applied to MOABs, BFBs, and ZOMGs. It can be considered the opposite of the Purple Bloon.

Bloons series

In the Bloons games, there are 23 Bloon types, many of which also have special effects, such as exploding or dropping a spiked ball when popped. Usually, they are popped in one hit regardless of type or color. Other effects include providing an extra dart or a boomerang to throw. In later Bloons games, there are also bloons that require multiple hits to pop, like the Helium Bloon which floats up after being touched once, then it can be touched again before popping.

Abilities

Shielded Bloon

Shield Bloon Red BSM2M

Shielded Bloons made their debut in Flash Bloons Super Monkey 2's 1-4 stage. In the middle of the bloon is a lightning symbol. These bloons take several hits to pop their outer layer, before revealing non-shielded children. Super Monkey cannot move through these Bloons. No weapon relying on Pierce can pierce through a Shielded Bloon, with a few exceptions. Exceptions include weapons relying on Energy (BSM2 Mechanic) instead of Pierce, and in Mobile, a few Powerups, Shard Storm, and Thunder Wings.

Phasing Bloon

Phasing Bloons vanish out of sight every few seconds, causing them to be unable to be targeted. They otherwise look the same as a normal bloon. They are the equivalent of Camo Bloons in the BTD series.

Bloons Pop!

In Bloons Pop!, the bloons from Bloons TD 6 up to MOAB are available in the game, along with all three bloon properties in that game plus Shielded Bloons from other games and a few exclusive bloons. BFBs (each named as "The Behemoth") and ZOMGs re-appear in this game as "Boss Bloons", despite not being a true Boss Bloon.

Bloons Card Storm

In Bloons Card Storm, Bloon cards are one of the three types, and serve as the main offense against the opposing hero. After being played, Bloon cards prepare to attack the opponent based on a turn delay value they have. Once the delay is over, the Bloons attack the hero. A Bloon's health and attack are the same, except for Double Attack Bloons, which have twice as much attack as they do health. Playing a Bloon also grants Bloontonium, which can be used to play hero abilities. Some Bloon cards also have special abilities, and they are effected by many Powers.

Health

In most games, blimps have the base set of health until ramping occurs during Freeplay mode.

MOAB-class bloon Health Red Bloon Equivalent (RBE)
M.O.A.B. 200 536/613/616/856/700/1800/10158
B.F.B. 700 2,884/3,164/4,824/8,500/17,500/16,291/4,000
Z.O.M.G. 4000 16,656/27,296/81,980/6,000
D.D.T. 400 (BTD6), 300 (BMC), 450 (BATTD) 816/1256/924
B.A.D. 20,000 (BTD6), 15,000 (BATTD), 14,000 (BTDB2) 55,760/98,360

In Bloons Monkey City, blimps have less health than normal. BMC Flash cities have blimps that start with slightly more health on Bloon Dunes compared to the first city Grassy Pass.

City

Bloon Health

City 1 66% of normal blimp health
City 2 80% of normal blimp health

Ramping

Starting in Bloons TD 5, bloons and blimps gain health and speed in freeplay mode.

In Bloons TD 5, the speed multiplier can be calculated by this formula: maximum(6.6 * (waveNumber - 85) / (200 - 85), 1). In BTD5 Flash and BTD5 Mobile, speed starts increasing on round 103. See also Freeplay Mode for more details for other games in the series, specifically BTDB, BMC and their mobile counterparts.

  • For bloon health, see the table below:
Round Blimp Health
86-115 1.5x health +2% per round
116+ 2.1x health +5% per round

In Bloons Monkey City after round 30, the bloons get a 25% (15% in mobile) increase in health and 5% increase in speed for each round until round 103, at which point it becomes exponential and uses the BTD5 speed formula alongside the 5% per round. As of May 5, 2016, boss bloons also receive the speed increases starting on boss level 31, although this buff has only been confirmed on the Flash version.

Previously it was +2% speed and health per round from 81-115, then it was +5% per round from that point onwards without the speed increment changing. As of now, the blimps gain further speed and health starting from Round 101.

Income

Main article: Money#Income Multipliers

In the standard Bloons TD series and Bloons Monkey City, popping a bloon earns money, $1 per individual bloon popped. For example, a Green Bloon that is fully popped gives $3, $1 from popping it into a Blue Bloon, $1 from popping it into a Red Bloon, and $1 for popping it to nothing. An exception is from certain bloon types such as BTD6 Bloonarius Minions and regrown Regrow Bloons (see Regrow Farming/Bloons TD for details). After a certain round, the cash gained from pops decreases. Income per pop can be increased by all Generates Bonus Income Per Pop Bonus Income Per Pop sources such as Monkey Town and bloons affected with the Gold status effect.

Quotes

Balloons are a totally separate thing to Bloons! One is a harmless children’s toy, the other is a rubbery death-being obsessed with eliminating all monkey-kind!
