A virtual YouTuber, or VTuber for short, is a YouTuber that uses a (usually anime-inspired) computer-generated avatar instead of their real face. VTubers often host livestreams where they play video games or react to media online.

The first entertainer to coin the phrase "Virtual YouTuber", Kizuna AI, began live-streaming in late 2016 and her popularity started a trend within Japan and later worldwide. By 2020, there were over 10,000 VTubers.[1] VTubers have been used as government representatives in Japan and have been involved with major advertising campaigns and breaking livestream-related world records.

Currently, the most subscribed VTuber worldwide is Gawr Gura, who has over 4 million subscribers as of April 2025.[2]
