Plot

Yo-kai Espy

Nate encounters Espy when she was inspiriting Katie and had her read Nate and friends' minds to correctly guess what they were thinking with an increasingly unnerving smile (including Eddie's dream of being a musician). Increasingly unnerved, the boys keep trying to hollow out their thoughts. After school, this Yo-kai cornered Nate, who was accompanied by Jibanyan and Whisper and was aiming for home due to an urge to use the "porcelain throne", and Nate finally revealed the troublesome Yo-kai, also freeing Katie from her inspirit, the latter going elsewhere, none the wiser.

After some time of dealing with Espy's annoying mind reading abilities, Nate's body reminds him of his original train of thought before Espy arrived, which revealed Espy was not able to turn off her powers and blushed fiercely at the inappropriate thoughts Nate suddenly had. An idea was soon born and began concentrating especially hard on a thought, Nate thinking of repeatedly pulling his pants up and down, which Espy was forced to be subjected to, and eventually was ejected from the area out of sheer mortification, leaving her Yo-Kai medal behind for him to take.

Trivia

  • This is the first episode to reuse animation scenes from previous episodes. Footage from EP001, EP002, EP008, EP015, and EP017 were recycled.
  • After Jibanyan's Chocobars were dropped by Peckpocket, he makes an expression similar to Myame from the anime MyameMyame.
  • The scared expression that fictitious girl character in the manga resembles Kazuo Umezu from the manga series Watashi wa Shingō, which has become a pop culture parody in other Japanese media.
  • The realistic depiction of Komasan in the manga bears strong resemblance to Shadowside Komasan.
  • The scene of Peckpocket stealing Whisper's Yo-kai Pad in Recap Time is a reference to Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons in Looney Tunes.
  • Komasan's flashback display various Yo-kai that he never interacted onscreen.
  • This is the last Season 1 episode for the English dub, and to be dubbed into languages like German and Russian.
  • In Cartoon Network UK and Ireland airings of the episode and SpaceToon airings in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, the part where Nate pulls his pants up and down was cut.
    • In United Kingdom and Ireland, it was cut to Nate rushing to find a toilet.
    • Though in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, less of that scene is shortened and was cut to Jibanyan and Whisper fainting.
  • This is the second episode wherein Roughraff ends up having a duel with the Yo-kai of the segment that lasted all day. The first being in EP003 with Manjimutt.

Dub Differences

  • In the original, Whisper states that Espy is known for "I really like that boy; I have been found out" incident. The dub changes it that Espy does the "Pick a card" trick.
  • Whisper denied that Nate looks funny, and only thought of it when taking a glance, which Nate gets upset. This was changed to that he thought Nate looks handsome for a human, with Nate saying he's making it up.
  • In the English dub Nate was singing when thinking of himself changing his pants, rather than mumbling to himself in the original.
  • In Recap Time, Whisper needed his Yo-kai Pad back as he needed the information, with Nate stating that he don't know it after all. In the dub, Whisper states he can't let anyone know about his secret, with Nate stating he already knows it.

Errors

  • Nate was surprised that Jibanyan was hoarding the chocolate bars, even though Nate knew about it since EP005.
  • The title scroll for "Yo-kai Espy" cuts off mid-screen in its exit animation.
  • English dub; Lulu is incorrectly referred to as Lucy.
