Plot

Warning: plot & spoiler details are listed below.

The Rare One

As Nate watches television, his mother comes in dressed in conspicuous clothing. She sheds them to reveal that she had done so because she had just bought a whoopie pie (Curry Bread in the original) from Banter Bakery, which Nate says that bakery has the chef being noted as an absolute perfectionist with his crafts, selling none that's no less than perfect. The reason Nate's mother got one was because she stood in line for a long time, then praised his mom for her commitment.

After he happily eats the food his mother got him, Whisper mentions the occurrence of rare Yo-kai, though resorts to his pad when asked by Nate. He eventually pulls out info on the Noko, a snake-like Yo-kai noted for its jumping prowess. When Whisper turns away to fiddle with his pad, a Noko appears behind Whisper in view of Nate, vanishing as soon as Whisper turns around to look at Nate. Once his back was turned, the Noko reappears, only this time, another one accompanies it.

While Whisper keeps looking away back-and-forth, several more Noko appear until Whisper explodes in irritation, sending all the Noko in the room flying. Ignoring some Noko that bounced off of him, Whisper continues his point of the rarity of the Noko, despite the fact a Noko just replaced itself with his pad. Afterwards, A Noko offers a Yo-kai Medal to Nate, unsuspecting of Whisper.

Yo-kai Manjimutt

After being annoyed by Whisper's sleeping habits at home and on the way to school, Eddie tells Nate and Bear that there is a rumor going around which is of a "human-faced dog" that resides in Springdale. After Eddie shows a photo of what it looks like, Nate and Bear doesn't believe at first but Katie steps in to say that she has seen it last night.

Katie saw it while she was coming home from school during an evening, whereas she mistakened it for a lost puppy but screamed in fear when it looked at her. While this gets the others scared, Katie said that she didn't get a good enough look at it, but knew it was no ordinary dog. From Katie's explanation, Nate thought to himself that it may she may have seen a Yo-kai.

Later on in the evening, Nate goes on to fearlessly find the human-faced dog. Whisper assumes that he's acting this way because he wants to save Katie from the human-faced dog, to the point of even impersonating a possible outcome between the two. Whisper warns him to be more careful because Katie saw the human-faced dog without a Yo-kai Watch and says that it's rumored to be powerful and can turn anyone into them when it bites an unsuspecting human.

They both notice a regular dog walking down the street, which turns out to be the human-faced dog they were looking for all this time, who introduces himself as Yo-kai Manjimutt. At first, they're unsettled by his appearance, but he turns out to be gentle, yet depressed about being a human-faced dog. Nate asks it's because of how he's scary-looking he is.

Nate's reasoning makes Manjimutt feel even more depressed, leaving him to sit in a corner but Nate asks him why he's feeling that way. At first, he disapproves Nate of still calling him a "human-faced dog", which makes him feel sad about his appearance but after that, Manjimutt goes on to tell his story.

Afterwards, Manjimutt goes to an oden stand where he orders a drink and urges Nate to sit with him. After ordering some drinks for the others, Nate notices that the man running the stand could see him further revealing that everyone else can normally see him. After they drank some of their beverage, Manjimutt tells Nate and Whisper about how he became a Yo-kai.

Manjimutt was originally an average business man that one day lost his job due to his business having budget cuts. He was so depressed that he ended up drinking at the oden stand, feeling too embarrassed to face his wife anymore in the process. On the same night, he mindlessly danced around in the streets (getting drunk in the original) and carelessely crashes into the pile of wooden boards while a toy poodle was in sight, turning him into Yo-kai Manjimutt.

Despite Manjimutt being turned into a Yo-kai, he thought of it as a good thing and liked his new look, hoping he would gain traction with people who likes dogs, but everyone thought of him as scary, except for the man running the oden stand, making Manjimutt feel extremely depressed about himself. Manjimutt wanders off to another area in sadness, only for two policemen find and arrest him.

Nate and Whisper find Manjimutt being arrested by the police and hurriedly hands him his Yo-kai Medal before he gets handcuffed and escorted into the police car, where Nate blankly accepts it into his collection.

Here Comes Roughraff

During a school cleanup session, Bear runs to Nate and tells him about Eddie's unusual change in behavior. Eddie is shown as rebellious-looking than usual with his underpants and socks more visible, and plays pranks on the teachers, leading Nate to think that a Yo-kai is on the loose. Nate and Whisper follow Eddie around outside of school who keeps acting this way, leading him to use the Yo-kai Watch and find Yo-kai Roughraff.

Whisper explains about Roughraff's inspiriting effects whom causes innocent children to enter a stage of rebellion, sporting a meaner look and attitude which makes Nate worried even more about Eddie. Roughraff runs away from Nate, but Eddie is still acting rebellious with Whisper explaining that Roughraff must be defeated to end the effects of Eddie's inspirit.

Nate and Whisper chase down Roughraff, who runs away like a motorcycle until they eventually stop near a riverbank, leaving Roughraff has no other choice but to fight him. Nate summons Jibanyan to use as combat, but Jibanyan is startled and nervous by Roughraff's appearance. Roughraff jumps while Jibanyan tries to attack, but he lands on Jibanyan and causes the two to be fused into Baddinyan.

The unexpected occurrence surprises Nate and Whisper, scaring that Jibanyan has turned towards a stage of rebellion. Despite their warnings, they cringe at his bad habits such as eating two Chocobars in one go and before dinner, and in bed while not caring to clean up the wrappers, and not bothering to clean his teeth or wash his hands after eating.

Fearing they have no other options, Nate summons Manjimutt who surprisingly has his prison bars and toilet brought along with him. Whisper uses his swirl to break open the lock, while Nate orders Manjimutt to fight off Roughraff, resulting in him being scared to do so. Nate motivates Manjimutt to talk Roughraff out of the problem, which gets him to do it, but is suddenly punched in the face.

Manjimutt eventually retaliates, by getting back up and both fight against each other while they make insults for a long time before they both eventually stop. They laugh off their actions and unexpectedly form a friendship with each other. It was until the next day that Eddie went back to normal and Manjimutt was sent back to jail.

Manjimutt: Part 2

After the events of the previous segment, Manjimutt is given some dinner in his jail cell and hopes he will get out while the police officer hopes that he has learned his lesson. While Manjimutt contemplates, he notices the police officer reading the newspaper containing a career for a hair stylist, and hopes to get a job when Manjimutt is released.

Trivia

  • Baddinyan does not give his medal to Nate and wasn't registered in the Recap Time, most likely due to choosing to not befriend Nate unlike Roughraff.
  • This is the last Recap Time segment to have a video runtime scroll at the bottom.
  • The scene at the beginning of the Recap Time is reminiscent to the intro of the 1979 Japanese action drama Tantei Monogatari.
  • When Jibanyan and Roughraff fuse into Baddinyan, Nate said that Jibanyan had "gone to the dark side" in the English dub, which is a well-known reference to Star Wars.

Dub differences

EP003RemovedScene
  • Inconsistently, the Curry Bread was renamed to a "Whoopie Pie", as the food item appears in the games under the original name.
  • The length of time that Nate's mother spent in the queue lining up has been made vague, when the original version has her say she waited for 5 hours.
  • The sound of a clock ticking is added when Whisper was failing to bring up a rare Yo-kai name.
  • The "human-faced dog" (or HFD for short) was originally a creature in urban legend called jimmenken, following closer to Manjimutt's original youkai design basis.
  • Manjimutt's "old man gag" scene and pun, which is a wordplay on ossan (オッサン) and the person on the 1,000 yen banknote is removed in the English dub, likely because it was too hard to translate.
  • Due to the fact that children's television standards have restrictions on alcohol and drugs being featured, the sake Manjimutt was drinking was renamed to toilet water despite it still overflowing like an alcoholic beverage, and his drunken dance prior to him becoming a Yo-kai was explained as insanity borne out of grief.
  • Manjimutt saying that he has to pee when he leaves the oden stand is muted in the English dub, although his mouth still moves as he leaves.
  • Manjimutt had two daughters mentioned in the original, but was changed to just one.
  • The police arrested Manjimutt due to him drinking too much in the original, but was changed to simply due to him being the human-faced dog that was scaring everyone.
  • In the original, Eddie's butt is shown when he begins acting rebellious. This was covered up in the English dub, yet foolishly the dialogue referring to it is not, as Bear still says 'butt-crack'.
    • A similar yet separate paint edit is made for South East Asian markets and dubs, albeit with part of his crack still visible to match the literal dialogue translations.
  • The title card for Manjimutt: Part 2 and as well as the textual teaser at the end is removed, even though the jingle at the end is kept.
  • In Recap Time, Nate is rather bored of Whisper talking about Manjimutt, and wanted to hear about Roughraff and Noko instead, with Whisper responding the Noko is more rare. This was changed in the dub, as Whisper is more concerned about where Nate got the Noko medal.

Errors

  • When Manjimutt pours some juice into Nate and Whisper's glasses, the glasses are drawn smaller than usual.
  • It is shown that Roughraff emerges from Baddinyan after Nate goes on to summon Manjimutt, yet near the end, Baddinyan is still shown despite Roughraff already "un-fusing" from him.
