In XDefiant, abilities are faction-specific passive or active upgrades that affect regular gameplay. Three types of abilities exist, being the Ultra, Activated Ability and Passive Trait. In Ranked, abilities are restricted to only one player during the match.
Ultras are the strongest form of ability available to a faction, with the potential to significantly change the outcome of a match. Ultras charge the slowest out of all abilities, being only able to be charged by earning score. Ultras cannot be affected by EMP Grenades nor Hijack, but can be affected by Lockout. Dying once the Ultra has been used will result in losing the Ultra, resetting its progress to 0%. The Ultra cannot be changed. Switching factions will reset the progress of the Ultra.
Activated Abilities are the most commonly used ability, with the potential to significantly change an individual gunfight. Activated Abilities charge the fastest out of all abilities, being able to be recharged over time after 20-40 seconds, depending on the ability. Activated Abilities can predominantly be affected by EMP Grenades and Hijack, as well as Lockout. Each faction has two available Activated Abilities to choose from.
Passive Traits are abilities that are always active, and thus have no lifetime or recharge time. Passive Traits are not affected by EMP Grenades, Hijack or Lockout. The Passive Trait cannot be changed.

Patch Notes
- Players now receive notifications for destroying specific enemy abilities (such as Spiderbots, Scrap Turrets, Mag Barriers, etc.).
- Corrected an issue in Ranked mode preventing PC keyboard users from confirming their pre-selected Ability if a teammate has the same faction pre-selected.
- Kill assists weren't contributing to a player's ultra charge, but now they are.
