YangYang

Yangyang (Simplified Chinese: 扬扬; Korean: 양양), born Yang Yang Liu (Simplified Chinese: 刘扬扬), is a Taiwanese singer and songwriter. He is the main rapper and main dancer of the Chinese male idol group WayV. Despite debuting in 2019, he was only introduced as a member of the South Korea-based male idol group NCT and its sub-unit NCT U during the NCT 2020 project. He is also part of WayV's second sub-unit WayV-TEN&YANGYANG.

Early life

He was born and raised in Taiwan, but moved to Düsseldorf, Germany with his family at the age of 11. He attended ISR International School on the Rhine, an international school where German and English were both used. In school, he was required to learn another additional language, and he chose to learn Spanish over French.

He flew back to Taipei just to participate in the Global Audition for SM Entertainment held in February 2016. He started his training in June of the same year, moving to South Korea.

Career

Pre-debut

He was introduced as a member of the SMROOKIES SR18B on September 15, 2018[1]. He is SM Entertainment's first and only Taiwanese artist (an in extension, an artist coming from Europe).

WayV

The formation of WayV was announced through the group's official Weibo account on December 31, 2018[2], though the group's existence had been alluded to during the NCT 2018 promotions.

He debuted with WayV as the group's main rapper on January 17, 2019, with the digital release The Vision.


For WayV's Rainbow V project, he created a dance performance with Lucas and Hendery. The concept was fashion and freestyle dance, and the music they used was Post Malone's "Wow."

On August 17, 2021, with YangYang, Ten debuted as a member of the sub-unit WayV-TEN&YANGYANG, with the digital release Low Low.

WayV was not considered a part of the NCT brand until the promotions for NCT 2020, marking Xiaojun, Hendery, and Yangyang's official debut in NCT and in South Korea.

Yangyang participated in promotions for the song "Misfit" for NCT RESONANCE Pt. 1 and 90's Love for NCT RESONANCE Pt. 2.

Yangyang featured on IMLAY's 3rd album DYSTOPIA which was released on February 19, 2020, with the title track "Asteroid."

Personal life

His family is composed of his father, mother, and older sister. His family owns a dog named Nian Nian. His family is still living in Düsseldorf, Germany, though they occasionally go to Taiwan. The reason for the move to Germany is due to his father's business with IT company branches in Taiwan and Germany.

Trivia

  • He can speak five languages: Mandarin, English, German, Korean, and a little bit of Spanish.
    • He thinks in Mandarin and English.[3]
    • During fansigns, when fans ask him to write something in Chinese and he doesn't know how to write it, he will either ask their manager how to write it or type the character on his phone and draw it on paper.[4]
  • In the new dormitory, he has his own room, but shares the unit with Kun and Ten. He has three fish as pets, which he call by the names "Fish 1", "Fish 2", and "Fish 3". He believes giving the fishes names is meaningless because they won't respond to it when they are called.
  • In the old dormitory, he shared a room with Kun and Xiaojun. The room has a computer, which they use to play games.
  • During his trainee days, he shared a dormitory with Kun, Lucas, and Hendery.
  • His English name is also Yangyang, and he used this when he was living in Germany. Pre-debut, fans speculated his name to be Yangyang Fisher, though of course this was proven to be false.
  • He decided to audition for SM Entertainment after seeing a dream of himself standing on stage, but it wasn't his life dream to be an artist. Through the experience of watching SMTOWN LIVE WORLD TOUR VI in SEOUL on July 8, 2017, he knew exactly what he wanted, and started to seriously engage in the life of a trainee.[5]
  • He doesn’t have a nickname because people thought YangYang was already a nickname. He wants to be called Xiao Yang (Chinese: 小羊, Little Sheep).
  • During Moonwalk promotions, he was nicknamed the Annoying Orange by his fellow members.
  • It's speculated that he has been a fan of EXO before debuting, as he was seen wearing an EXO cap in pre-debut photos.
  • Although he's not tall, he was good at basketball and won an MVP in a game against other schools when he was in school. He is also confident in other ball games such as soccer and handball.
  • Yangyang's mother once gifted the other WayV members with t-shirts with Nian Nian printed on them.
  • He's called the Boss Maknae of WayV, especially because he likes teasing the older members, particularly Kun. Yangyang thinks Kun is kind because he accepts his jokes well.

  • When you search his name in Korean, Yangyang County (a place in Gangwondo) pops up, so he's disappointed by it.

    • He calls himself "yangyang_x2" because his name has different variations. The members call him Yángyáng (proper tones, both second), while his mom and Ten call him Yǎngyáng (third tone, second tone). In Germany, he's called Yángyang (second tone, neutral tone), while in English, it's pronounced Yengyeng.
    • He is learning boxing.
    • His role models are SHINee's Taemin and Travis Scott.
