Q-5D

The Q-5D is a prototype multi-role combat aircraft available to China. It first appears in Wargame: Red Dragon.

History

The Hongdu Q-5D (NATO reporting name "FANTAN") is a twin-engine, single-seat, supersonic multi-role combat aircraft developed by Hongdu for the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force. Based on the Nanchang Q-5, itself based on the Mikoyan MiG-19, the Q-5D is an advanced variant of the Q-5 family, featuring compatibility with laser targeting pods, FLIR and Low Light pods, and laser-guided munitions. It has been provided a HUD, GPS and INS navigation as well as chaff and flare dispensers.

Overview

The Q-5D is a moderately priced prototype strike platform available to Chinese and Red Dragon decks. It has been provided good ECM (30%), an internal 30mm cannon, two PL-7 AAMs for self-defense, and two LT-2 laser-guided bombs. The LT-2 features the same explosive power as the NATO Mk 84, but is laser-guided, and highly accurate. The type can be used against armored columns and infantry to extraordinary effect, and this weapon system alone makes the Q-5D worth the relatively inexpensive 115 points per aircraft cost.

The Q-5D's chief drawbacks are its lack of a long range missile and relatively low speed. The latter keeps the Q-5D in the kill zones of SAMs and AAMs longer, while the former prevents the Q-5D from defending itself except at very close range. Nevertheless, the LT-2's power and accuracy, combined with fair ECM and helicopter hunting capability provided by the PL-7 make the Q-5D a very cost effective multirole platform.
