~ Jaime Lannister writing Vargo Hoat and Zollo's responsibility for the loss of his sword hand in the White Book. |
Zollo, also known as Zollo the Fat, is a minor antagonist in Brienne Tarth's and Jaime Lannister's POV storyline in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series.
He is a Dothraki and a member of the infamous sellsword company known as the Brave Companions, whose members consist of unsavory, barbaric, and savage criminals from across the world and were led by Vargo Hoat.
Zollo is infamously known for amputating Jaime's sword hand on Hoat's orders. Following the latter's partial descent into insanity due to an infected ear, Zollo, along with many Brave Companions, were forced to scatter across Westeros, becoming fugitives in the process.
In the TV series Game of Thrones, Zollo was cut all together, and his role in amputating Jaime's hand was given over to Locke, an original character of the show who served as a Bolton man-at-arms.
Appearance
Zollo is fat in appearance.
Personality
Jaime considers Zollo to be one of the worst members of the Brave Companions. In addition, like his fellow sellswords, Zollo is very sadistic and malicious. His sadism and malevolence can even make him lose control himself to the point where he would disobey Vargo Hoat's orders just to fulfill his desires. An example is when he seeks to rape Brienne Tarth against Hoat's wishes.
Biography
A Storm of Swords

Zollo was among the Brave Companions when they captured Jaime Lannister and Brienne Tarth near Maidenpool. Though Brienne tries to explain to Vargo Hoat that she is also serving the Starks through House Tully, this was ignored though, and Hoat just orders Zollo and Rorge to savagely beat Brienne to silence her. Later, when Jaime tries to bribe Vargo Hoat with the promise that his father, Lord Tywin Lannister, will pay him well in exchange for Jaime, Hoat seems to accept it, but he tells Jaime that he has to send Tywin a message first.
Because the Brave Companions had switched over to House Stark after a deal with Lord Roose Bolton has been made, Vargo Hoat had realized that he had underestimated Lord Tywin and fears that if Roose betrays Robb Stark and sides with the Lannisters, then they would be handed over to the Iron Throne to be punished for their betrayal. Seeking to instigate a conflict between Roose and Tywin, as he so believed that the latter would presumably blame the former for the Brave Companions' barbarism under Lord Bolton's command, Hoat orders Zollo to amputate Jaime's sword hand while Urswyck and Shagwell held Jaime down, and Jaime screamed in agony as Zollo cuts off his hand with his arakh.
One night, after days of traveling and upon nearly reaching Harrenhal, while Brienne Tarth was asleep, Zollo, together with Shagwell and Rorge, snuck up on her in an attempt to gang-rape her just for their own sadistic enjoyment, despite being ordered not to. However, they get into an argument over who gets to rape her first. Their attempt was eventually thwarted when Jaime yelled "SAPHIRES," which was loud enough to get Vargo Hoat's attention, thus saving Brienne.
Later, after the Brave Companions had made several failed raids, Zollo was one of the many who remained behind at Harrenhal. He watched as Brienne was thrown into a bear pit after she bit off Hoat's ear. When Jaime, accompanied by Steelshanks and his men, returns to Harrenhal to rescue her, Zollo is among some of the Brave Companions who are outraged that their "entertainment" is ruined. When Zollo angrily raised his whip, he was ordered to stand down by Vargo Hoat, who knew that Steelshanks would overpower him as the latter's men outnumbered Hoat's men.
In White Sword Tower of the Red Keep, while adding an awkward update on his entry in the White Book, a tome that records the deeds of every Kingsguard knight, Jaime writes that he had lost his sword hand to the blade of Zollo the Fat.
A Feast for Crows
As his ear became infected due to it being bitten by Brienne, Vargo Hoat was left half-mad and in agony, which in turn caused him to lose his authority over the Brave Companions. As Ser Gregor Clegane and the Mountain's Men sought to retake Harrenhal, Zollo and the rest of the Brave Companions were forced to flee and separate into different small groups, while also abandoning Vargo Hoat at the Mountain's mercy. Each of them scattered across Westeros, though what became of Zollo is unknown, along with Togg Joth and Three Toes.
Later, at Harrenhal, while Jaime thinks to himself that the Stranger had made off with Hoat before he could even have the chance to deal with him, he knows that Zollo and the rest of the Brave Companions are still out there somewhere in Westeros.
