Tessario, best known as Tessario the Tiger and later mockingly known as Tessario the Thumb, is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He was a Volantene sellsword from the Free City of Volantis and was employed by Lord Unwin Peake to be the captain of the Fingers, the personal guard of Unwin and later Lord Thaddeus Rowan.
Appearance
Tessario had tiger stripes tattooed across his face and back, implying he once served as a tiger cloak, a member of the city guard of Volantis.
Personality
Tessario the Tiger was foul mouthed, brash and quick tempered. He is also aggressive and quick to provoke as he murdered Ser Robin Massey when the two were quarreling.
Biography
Nothing is known of Tessario's past, but as he bore tiger-stripe tattoos across his face and back, he is indicated to have served as the city guard of Volantis as a tiger cloak.
He was eventually employed in the service of Lord Unwin Peake during the early reign of King Aegon III Targaryen. After Unwin became Hand of the King, he names Tessario as the captain of the Fingers, the personal guard Lord Peake and later Thaddeus Rowan. Mushroom mocked Tessario as Tessario the Thumb in reference to the name of the Unwin's guard. Tessario is considered by Maester Yandel to be the most likely suspect in the death of King Aegon's first husband, Queen Jaehaera Targaryen, who mysteriously died when she threw herself from a window to land on the iron spikes below Maegor's Holdfast, causing her to slowly die an agonizing death. Though it was deemed a suicide, it was suspected that she was murdered by Lord Unwin or even his bastard half-brother, Ser Mervyn Flowers, who guarded the door to the queen's bedchamber at the time of the incident. it was also suggested that he simply stood aside so he could let Tessario kill her.
Tessario the Tiger got into a quarrel with Ser Robin Massey over a horse that both men wished to purchase, which resulted in Tessario killing Ser Robin. As the latter was one of the knights King Aegon III wanted to name to the Kingsguard, which was undone by Lord Unwin, he came to greatly resent Tessario and the Fingers.
Tessario was banned from the Mermaid by Roggerio Rogare when Tessario struck one of the prostitutes there. After the events of the Secret Siege, Tessario was named by Lord George Graceford as being involved in a plot against House Rogare. He was arrested at a tavern near the River Gate, trying to gain passage on an Ibbenese whaler to flee to the Port of Ibben. Under torture and interrogation, he confessed to wanting the Rogares dead, stating he did it for gold, girls and vengeance, being promised the manhood and life of Roggerio and ownership of his brothel. When asked who promised him this, he refused to give out an answer and just silently grinned. He was tortured more and named several other names before dying, although Lord Unwin Peake was not one of the names he gave up.
