Zenon Zogratis, also known as Zeno in the VIZ Manga translation, is a major antagonist of the Black Clover franchise. He is one of the three main antagonists (alongside his older siblings Dante and Vanica) of the second saga.
He is a member of the Dark Triad, who takes over the Spade Kingdom and becomes one of its generals. He is also the youngest brother of Lucius, Dante, and Vanica Zogratis. Like his siblings, he is a host of the highest-ranking devil, Beelzebub, granting him dangerous power.
While Zenon is just as sadistic as his siblings, he is far different from them, as Zenon is mainly concern with mainitaining order within the Spade Kingdom and genuinely believes that the plan to unleash the devils around to save human race is the best course of action. He is the arch-nemesis of Yuno Grinberryall and the Golden Dawn Squad.
He is voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki (who has also voiced Shiva in Record of Ragnarok) in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Zeno Robinson in the English version.
Appearance
Zenon is a tall, stern-looking man with black, but untidy hair. He possesses a scar similar to his brother, but this one is on the left side of his forehead, as it extends down to his cheek, and is in the shape of a cross.
His outfit is similar to that of his siblings, which consists of a dark-colored jacket with a huge fur collar around his neck. The fur collar also possesses the logo of the Spade Kingdom on the back. The jacket is held together by a small belt and wears a suit underneath. He also wears a set of belts around his waist and wears black pants with boots.
When Zenon enters in 55% of his devil power, he sprouts out large horns from his head and a black wing from his left side. The mark on his face also expands, covering more of his face when he enters in this form.
Personality
Zenon presents himself as a quiet, but sinister man. Like his siblings, he is highly devoted to his kingdom and does whatever he can to protect it and benefit its military strength. Though he is a man of few words, his actions speak words for the type of person he truly is; a cold-hearted, ruthless man, who is determined to expand his forces and gain power through invasion and attacking his foes.
Unlike Vanica and Dante, Zenon is not cruel and evil for the sake of it. His intentions of using the Tree of Qliphoth is a means to save humanity by restarting it as a whole and resurrecting everyone with undying bodies. Zenon believes that his actions will ensure the benefit of the Spade Kingdom and in turn, humanity as a whole. It's for this reason however that he believes emotions and determination mean nothing without having access to the power and strength of achieving goals in life.
Likewise, he is very arrogant, having very little tolerance for those that he views as weak, including his subordinates, who he deemed as useless following their defeats. However, unlike his siblings, he doesn't appear to enjoy the thrill of combat like they do and instead prefers to end his battles quickly instead of drawing them out, even if his opponent puts up a decent fight. Nevertheless, he doesn't hesitate to brutalize his opponents, as he takes delight in doing so.
As a child, he was very similar to Yuno, competing with his best friend Allen to become the Commander of the Spade Kingdom defense force. His determination to achieve his goal initially led him away from his family's tradition of making pacts with Devils, but when he was confronted by a Devil in a dungeon, he ultimately rationalized it was too dangerous to risk letting it escape and reluctantly killed his best friend to destroy the devil. The loss of Allen and his powerless against the devil influenced Zenon belief that only absolute power matters in the end.
History
Background
A few years ago, the Spade Kingdom was ruled by the peaceful royal family known as House Grinberryall. However, the family was attacked and murdered by Zenon, along with his siblings. The three then took over the kingdom and formed the Dark Triad, where they ruled the kingdom. side by side.
Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle Arc
Years later, Zenon lead an attack on the Diamond Kingdom where he took out the majority of their forces with no effort, including their generals. Three Black Bull members, Vanessa, Luck and Magna were there to witness and noted how dangerous this man truly was, as Luck himself sensed his cold aura and refused to fight him.
As six months pass by, Zenon is later seen in his kingdom, where he is attending a meeting with the rest of his siblings.
Zenon later takes two members of the Dark Disciples with him, Gaderois Godroc and Foyal Migusteau, where they travel to the Clover Kingdom and lead an attack the Golden Dawn base, with the intention of capturing their captain, William Vangeance. Alecdora Sandler, one of Golden Dawn's seniors, attempt to protect his captain, but he is easily defeated by Zenon.
Zenon then proceeds to continue his massacre on the base as he reveals how he wishes to claim William so that they can use his magic for the Spade Kingdom. Zenon easily defeats the Magic Knight and expresses his wish to collect William's World Tree Magic for the Spade Kingdom. Zenon manages to capture the captain with his bone capture, but the remaining Golden Dawn mages, Letoile, Klaus and Yuno, try to stop him.
Unfortunately for them, while they were able to beat Gaderois and Foyal, Zenon was able to beat them in the end. Zenon was most impressed with Yuno as he noted his strength and left him to die after demonstrating 55% of his power on him. It was later revealed that William used most of his power on shielding his squad members instead of fully attacking Zenon, who commented that Willian could have made some difference if he used his power at full instead of protecting the weak. William replied that his duty as a Captain was to shield everyone in the Golden Dawn squad, who had accepted him no matter what he became of, before the fight between them ended up in defeat.
Later, after Asta and Yami Sukihiro defeated Dante Zogratis, Zenon ambushed Yami before he had a chance to apprehend Dante, before subduing him and showing a severely injured William in front of the Black Bull squad members. Finral escorted Dante but was confronted by the Black Bull squad members, with Finral using his Spiral Magic to deviate Zenon's Bone Magic, causing Zenon to realize his power being damaged because of Yuno's attack.
Whilst being curious over Finral's ability, Zenon decided to retreat with Yami as his captive. Vanessa attempted to use Fate Magic to rescue Yami, but Zenon bashed Rouge easily, whilst Asta became too weak and injured that Liebe refused to lend him power any longer to keep Asta alive. In the end, Zenon used his devil's Spiral Magic and teleported himself, Dante, Yami and William away.
Spade Kingdom Raid Arc
Zenon later arrived in Spade Kingdon's castle, where Morris (now an ally to the Dark Triad) was curing Dante and enhancing his flesh. He then asked Morris about Dante's condition as well as other business Morris was attending to.
Later, the resistance of Spade Kingdom, that was aligned with Nacht and Magic Knight Captains from Clover Kingdom, arrived to fight the Dark Triad and accused them of regicide and oppression. However, Zenon then summoned an artificial Demon God created by Morris and denounced the resistance members as citizens of Spade Kingdom, before he announced the start of ritual to create the Tree of Emptiness. However, the artificial Demon God was soon met with a fierce attack from Mereoleona Vermillion.
Powers and Abilities
Zenon is a skilled and merciless Spade Kingdom magician that uses Bone Magic and enhances himself with a demon, and wiped out the 90% of Diamond Kingdom and half of the Golden Dawn squad of Clover Kingdom, in a span of half a year. Zenon has proved himself to be a skilled and powerful mage who even drove Luck, a hot-blooded fighter, into horror. In his first battle in the Diamond Kingdom, he eliminated an army alone, defeating all of its milliants including two of its Eight Shinning Generals. His power is enhanced by the possession of Beelzelbub, and he can use at least 50% of its power to defeat Yuno and William Vengenace.
While the rest of the Zogratis siblings are equally poweful, Zenon happens to be the most skillful of the trio, being able to organize his attacks very well and use strategies and tactics to overwhelm his enemies, unlike Dante and Vanica, who prefers using raw strength over tactics. It's even revealed that besides Lucius himself, Zenon is a better host than his older siblings, having the most potential than those two. because of this that Zenon is arugably the most difficult opponent to defeat.
Powers
- Bone Magic: Zenon's magic allows him to create and manipulate bones at his will. These bones can come in various shapes but Zenon forms them into sharp, spear-like objects that are capable of skewering and piercing through human flesh. The bones also possess regenerative healing abilities, allowing Zenon to regain and reuse his bones. He can also craft and mold these bones into weapons such as swords.
- Spatial Magic: Utilizing the powers of his devil, Zenon can use this magic to control and manipulate the elements of space itself. He can use Spatial Mana Domination to entrap magic spells and his opponents in spatial cubes that negate their magic property entirely He can also create portals for teleportation. At full power, this magic is even capable of erasing space itself.
Abilities
- Devil Possession: Like his siblings, Zenon is a host of a high-ranking devil and thus has access to the powers of said devil. He can only use up to 80% of his devil's power but with 55% alone, he is able to destroy an entire Magic Squad with little effort. The more power he draws from, the more powerful he becomes, in addition to his appearance changing drastically, closer to that of a devil. With the gate of the underworld now open, Zenon can fully draw in 100% of his power.
- Devil Bargain: As a result of offering his soul to the devil, Beezlebub, Zenon transformed into a devil himself, greatly increasing his magic power and spells.
Trivia
- According to the official character file, Zenon's current age remains unknown.
- Zenon has no form of interests or hobbies in particular.
- Zenon's past of losing his best friend, Allen, might be a redition to Yūki Tabata's original script on Yuno's fate. In the earlier concept, he once planned to be killed Yuno off early in Chapter 7, until his editor talked him down.
- Zenon represents the element of Machiavellianism of the Dark Triad, for his ruthless determination to obtain his goals no matter the cost.
