~ Shin taunting Morgan Elsbeth after her failure to kill Ahsoka and Sabine. |
Shin Hati is a major antagonist in Season 1 and is set to return in Season 2 of the 2023 Disney+ series Ahsoka.
She is Baylan Skoll's apprentice, assisting Grand Admiral Thrawn in taking back the galaxy. Hati, along with Marrok, go on a quest to find Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren and Huyang. She is also Sabine's second archenemy.
She was portrayed by Ivanna Sakhno.
Appearance
Shin Hati is a human female with short white blonde hair, light blue eyes, fair skin, and dark eye shadow around her eyes. Despite not being a Jedi, Shin has a Padawan braid, or at least one similar to it. She wears brown and beige robes similar to a Jedi's as well with a dark cloak, however, she wore more vambraces.
Personality
Shin Hati is a very deadly, mysterious young woman who is more cold, and sullen compared to her master. She and her master operated within the shadows, abiding their time. They appear to be self-sufficient mercenaries. Baylan and Shin work in coordinated tandem smoothly. Her relationship with her master is more trusting and earnest, deviating from the deceitful nature of Sith duos. She is impulsive and eager to grab power by any means necessary. Shin is also very calculated, impatient, but she's a seeker. She also developed a rivalry with Sabine Wren since besting her in their lightsaber duel on Lothal. She is also incredibly ruthless, having slaughtered the entire New Republic security team while Morgan was being transported for her trial on the command of her master without any show of remorse or guilt.
She possessed the Sith's lack of mercy and the camaraderie of Jedi. Her wide eyes and dead stare offer a range of facial reactions that make Shin more intimidating and feral, yet she also toys with her prey when she wants a challenge. This also extends to her method of fighting, as Shin additionally stabbed Sabine in the abdomen, enough to critically injure her, but it seems Hati was cunning enough to realize that she could not hold her own when reinforcements suddenly came to Sabine's aid, instead fleeing with the Dathomiri map to avoid the risk of losing it. Shin gloated that Sabine had "no power," as she was unable to wield the Force during their duel on Seatos.
Skoll highly trusted her with solo missions. Shin was successful in her mission to Lothal to retrieve the star map that would lead Elsbeth and her team to the missing Grand Admiral Thrawn. Additionally, Shin avoids confronting Ahsoka Tano, due to her being more experienced in lightsaber in combat. Instead, she lets Baylan take care of Tano She also has a disdain for Morgan Elsbeth, after learning the latter is a Nightsister and called her a "witch." She seemed disturbed when she met more witches on Peridea. While Shin is very respectful towards Skoll, she wastes no time mocking Morgan when she comments how Morgan "almost had (Sabine and Ahsoka)."
She was fiercely loyal, on the other hand, to her master, Baylan Skoll, who's orders she followed without question. Shin's curiosity about the galaxy and Baylan's past prompts him to impart his wisdom and experience onto her. Despite her antagonistic relationship with Sabine Wren, Hati, though she hesitated, ultimately released Wren from a Force-choke hold when her master instructed it and often, when Morgan delivered orders to her, Shin would frequently look to Skoll for confirmation that he wanted her to follow Elsbeth's instructions. Shin has been shown to be vindictive and cruel, driven by an apparent bloodlust and yearning for power. Despite her dark attitude, she was described as being "eagerly" apprenticed to Skoll. Shin was enthused by the thought that it was now the turn of the Empire and the dark side to take power once more.
Shin had moments that showcased her doubt over what they were doing, hinting that there was more to her quest for power. When Thrawn initially agreed to release Sabine and allow her to search the planet for Ezra, he ordered Baylan and Shin to follow her, and, if she found Ezra, kill them both. Shin was visibly surprised by this and reminded Baylan of his promise. Baylan disappointed Shin, and she was still visibly uncomfortable with the order.
She has yet to tap into her full potential, but her master left her to her own devices. The sudden nature of their parting came as a surprise to Shin. His decision to release Shin so that she can follow her own destiny allows her to finally become a fearsome villain in her own right. Shin's focus is on a more immediate and material form of power, which she seeks to obtain through Grand Admiral Thrawn. Ultimately, Shin and Baylan parted ways because Shin's focus was fixed solely upon gaining a position of power in Thrawn's resurgent Empire.
After being abandoned by her master and left behind by Thrawn, Shin feels disillusioned - and all she wants is to belong somewhere. Now, Hati is a similarly discarded soul, left with no motivation or direction. Shin had little concern for a Jedi Order she never knew and was more than ready to destroy all enemies who crossed her path. Shin has been quick to leap to violent methods and lacks Baylan's calm sense of insight. Hati has few attachments to anything, including either side of the Force or to any particular organization.
History
Past
Shin Hati was a Force-sensitive young woman from an unknown planet. Sometime after Order 66, Hati met Baylan Skoll, a Jedi survivor of the Order that had since become a mercenary disillusioned with the ideals of the Order. After Order 66, Baylan tried to keep the memory of the dying Order alive, even taking on Shin as an apprentice to pass on his knowledge.
Although it should be noted that unlike his old friend, Anakin Skywalker, Skoll's disillusionment did not reach the point where he fully embraced the dark side of the Force as a Sith, but rather became a Dark Jedi. Shin would subsequently become Skoll's apprentice and under his tutelage, she began to learn the ways of the Force as a Dark Jedi apprentice, as well as a mercenary. He planned for Shin to be something more then a Jedi.
Ahsoka
Shin and her master were hired by former magistrate Morgan Elsbeth to liberate her from a New Republic cruiser. The pair traveled aboard the cruiser in a Eta-class shuttle and identified themselves as Jedi. Captain Hayle was suspicious but allowed the ship to land, planning to arrest them afterwords. Hayle greeted Baylan and Shin before asking them to peacefully surrender. In response, Hati lunged at the soldiers, killing two of them before they had time to react. Hati left Skoll then reached the bridge before it was secured, killing Officer Corbyt and the crew stationed there without mercy.
After joining his apprentice on the bridge, Skoll took her down to the detention cells and liberated Elsbeth, then all three escaped on board their shuttle. They then went to the planet Arcana with a former Inquisitor named Marrok where they saw the smoky ruins of a Nightsister temple. Elsbeth was in search of an ancient star map that would lead them to Thrawn. They discovered that it had already been taken by the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano during her search for the Jedi Padawan and friend Ezra Bridger. Morgan then said the temple belonged to her ancestors.
When Hati asks, Elsbeth admitted she is a witch of Dathomir as well as a survivor. Hati seemed disturbed by Morgan's truth and looked to her master for counsel after Elsbeth ordered her to go to Lothal. Before leaving she asked what was there, with Baylan saying Ahsoka's former apprentice Sabine Wren was on Lothal and in possession of the map. Shin went to Lothal accompanied with two HK-87 assassin droids. She sent out a probe droid to find Sabine's location and it reported back to Hati and the droids, who stood miles away on a hilltop.
Shin waited until nightfall then attacked by sending the assassin droids first. Shortly after unlocking the map, Sabine was attacked at the LothalNet comm tower by two HK assassin droids, with one of them grabbing her while the other stole the map and destroyed most of her equipment in the tower to hide the map's location. Sabine broke free of the droid and killed it with her blasters before she chased the other one downstairs and saw the assassin droid and Shin.
After Wren ignited the green lightsaber she once used, Shin also ignited her lightsaber after giving the star map back to the HK droid, Sabine ran towards Hati and the two engaged in a lightsaber duel. Their blades sparked against each other. Wren tried to retrieve the map, but Hati was a better lightsaber duelist. Shin spun her cloak in a quick blur and threw it at Sabine.
Sabine attempted to strike first, but Shin parried the attack with her own saber, which sent Sabine a few meters back. Hati continued the duel by attacking Sabine multiple times, with now her being the one who needed to block the strikes, which Wren did while slowly being pushed back each time their sabers clashed. As their duel continued, Ahsoka Tano and Huyang jumped into their starship and were on their way to the tower.
Sabine and Shin held multiple saber locks before the mercenary slowly tried to push Sabine onto the ground. While Wren was able to get out of the lock, she was quickly struck again by Hati, with the clash packing enough force to throw her onto the ground. As Sabine pushed back against Shin, the mercenary managed to stab Wren through the torso right as Ahsoka and Huyang arrived. Hati and the HK droid successfully escaped with the star map, and left Wren for dead. After retrieving the star map, Hati met with Skoll and later Elsbeth on the planet Seatos where a henge stood and was used for mapping to the other galaxy on the planet.
Morgan, with Baylan and Shin as witnesses, displays ancient Nightsister magicks to unlock the map and reveals the location of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Morgan was able to discern that Thrawn is hidden in a corner of space and time and that the Eye of Sion could be used to find and retrieve him. Baylan was dismissive of the idea of the Path of Peridea, but Morgan confirmed that it was real as she was able to hear and see visions of a future where Thrawn returns.
After Elsbeth left, Shin asked her master as to what would follow with the return Thrawn, which he replied with the answer that for some individuals, would be war or a new beginning, but for them, it would be gaining otherwise unforeseen power. Skoll then ordered Hati to travel to Corellia and assist Marrok in the operation there. Shin went to Corellia where she assisted Marrok in their final preparations for their plan to retrieve Thrawn by retrieving a hyperdrive from a Super Star Destroyer. After Marrok dueled Ahsoka briefly, Hati intervened by using her shuttle to rescue her comrade and escaped the planet with the Inquisitor.
Shin later attended a meeting through hologram with her master and Marrok on the bridge of the Eye of Sion with Morgan. Elsbeth said installation of the final hyperdrive on the ship would be complete, and they will soon find Thrawn again. Knowing Ahsoka was on Corellia, Elsbeth asked Skoll if her appearance troubled him to which he confirmed. Hati responded that there was no possible way of Tano tracking them down, as they had made a clean escape. Hati listened as her master saw Ahsoka was coming through the Force. Unknown to her, Hera Syndulla had managed to place a tracking device on her transport ship through the droid Chopper.
Not long afterwards, Ahsoka, Sabine, and the Jedi architect droid Huyang entered the Denab system by using Hera's tracker. They realized that communications were being jammed when they lost connection while speaking with Hera. As they attempted to reach Seatos, Hati, Marrok and four other Fiend starfighters ambushed the Jedi's star ship. Hati sent starfighters "two" and "three" to shadow Tano's ship. Wren manages to shoot one of the enemy starfighters. In response, Hati told Two-Six to fly with her. The remaining enemy fighters enter into formation and attacked.
Hati informed Morgan that the intruders were approaching the Eye of Sion. Elsbeth is disappointed with Hati for letting the intruders get this far but vows to deal with them herself. She tells Hati and her starfighters to steer clear and ordered the pilot droids to prepare the turbolasers. Shin then tells Marrok to form up on her wing and wait for her signal. Ahsoka's ship took intense enemy fire and Hati confirmed that the Jedi's ship has lost power and tells Elsbeth that she and her remaining starfighters will talk over the situation. While Wren worked on restoring the systems, Tano exited the starship in a spacesuit with her white lightsabers.
Marrok and Hati spot her on the wing of her shuttle and shoot at her but Ahsoka dodges enemy fire during the first round while Wren repaired the ship. Shin and her squadron mates return for a second run but the Jedi uses one of her lightsabers to slice through a fourth starfighter, causing it to explode in space. Tano then flees back inside the ship before Hati could shoot her. Sabine then piloted Ahsoka's ship into the planet's atmosphere with Hati and Marrok in pursuit. Sabine leads their pursuers through the stormy clouds of Seatos.
They encounter a pod of purrgil and flew around the massive space whales. Hati and Marrok continue their pursuit of Tano's ship. Sabine used the massive beasts' hulk and tentacle tails to make it harder for their pursuers to catch them. Hati asked if there is any sign of the enemy and Marrok said he doesn't see them. Hati thought that their enemies were hiding in the forests below and decides they should regroup and flew over the red forests away.
At the Seatos reflex point, Shin and Marrok inform Skoll and Morgan that their forces have located the enemy's ship about 12 klicks away. Skoll sent their forces out to stop Ahsoka and Sabine. Hati remarked that they won’t slow them down for long, but Skoll said she would. Hati smiled at her master before departing with Marrok to confront the Jedi pair in the forest. When they came face-to-face in the forest, Hati engaged Wren in a second duel, while Tano fought Marrok again.
Seeking revenge for their earlier duel, Wren chases Hati through the forest. At first, Wren shoots at Hati with her twin WESTAR blasters but the acolyte was able to deflect her blasts with her lightsaber. Wren was better prepared for her rematch with Hati, wearing her beskar armor this time. During the duel, Shin found Sabine much harder work than their last fight. Wren corners Hati among a cluster of trees but the dark sider uses her Force powers to hurl Wren against a tree, knocking her helmet off. Shin attempts to strike down Wren but the Mandalorian dodges her blade, which instead strikes a tree trunk causing it to break and fall. The two fight with their lightsabers, with Wren drawing her green lightsaber.
After Tano killed Marrok, Wren told her to go on and stop the others while she dealt with Hati. After Ahsoka leaves, Hati warns Wren that she will regret this decision before resuming the fight. Shin hits Sabine and manages to kick her to the ground. After Hati disarmed Wren she tried to Force push her back but it didn't work, and Hati mocked her for having no (Force) power. She attempts to strike Wren down but Sabine knocked the blade out of her hand with a dart. Hati manages to temporarily blind Wren with a smoke bomb, and flees. Shin returned to the henge to find her master and Ahsoka engaged in a lightsaber duel, with the Jedi having disrupted the pathway to Peridea from being uploaded.
Baylan told Hati to get the map but Tano levitated her and Force pushed Shin into the henge and knocked her out. She later regained consciousness to find that Skoll had beaten Ahsoka, but Wren had turned up and was holding the map threatening to destroy it. Her Master managed to convince Sabine to hand over the map with the promise of safe passage to find Ezra Bridger with them. Hati began Force choking Wren but relented and let her go, only after Skoll told her twice. Baylan firmly told Shin not to kill Sabine; after a beat of frustration, Shin obeyed.
Skoll then reactivated the map and finished uploading it, before destroying it himself to prevent them from being followed. Baylan and Shin took Sabine prisoner then joined Elsbeth on the Eye. The New Republic arrived with Hera Syndulla but were too late to stop the hyperspace jump. Shin, her Master and Morgan vanished to Peridea with no way to track them.
Shin was aboard the Eye of Sion with Baylan and Elsbeth when it eventually arrived in the unidentified galaxy. Morgan questioned Skoll’s decision to let Sabine live, but Skoll said her focus to find Ezra Bridger blinded her, and that she may yet be of use to them. As they approached the planet Peridea, a beacon signal from the surface was detected, so Hati, Skoll, Elsbeth and a captive Wren departed for the surface on a shuttle.
They landed at a mountain temple and were met by three Nightsister clan leaders, the Great Mothers. Hati was weary of encountering yet more witches, commenting discreetly to Skoll. The Great Mothers greeted them and said Thrawn was on his way, but were instantly displeased with Wren’s presence, remarking that she stank of Jedi and was dangerous. They had her confined to a cell alone, with Wren reminding Skoll that they had made a deal to find Ezra Bridger.
While awaiting Thrawn’s arrival, Hati and Skoll talked alone atop the temple. Skoll was contemplative, describing Peridea as a land of dreams and madness, children’s stories come to life. Hati voices that she does not know such stories, as she was not raised at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Skoll continues on, regarding the tales of Peridea as ancient folktales long forgotten. Hati muses that sometimes stories are just stories. Skoll recollects that at slightly older than Hati's age, he watched the Jedi Temple burn and couldn't make sense of it at the time.
However, Skoll states that as one ages and learns history, such things reveal themselves as inevitable, such as the fall of the Jedi and the rise of the Empire, repeating in a cycle that never ends. Hati asked if it is their turn and if Thrawn's return will finally bring them to power. Skoll regards such power as fleeting, instead claiming to seek a new beginning to bring the cycle to an end. When Hati asked if that beginning is there at Peridea, her master smiles, believing that it is if the stories were true.
When the Chimera arrived, Grand Admiral Thrawn emerged and made contact with the group. After Sabine Wren was brought up, Thrawn expressed some interest in the unexpected development, with Baylan taking credit for the capture. Upon hearing the names of the rogue Jedi, the Grand Admiral formally recognized Skoll, addressing him as a former General of the Jedi Order and remarking that he wouldn't be the first to leave the Jedi.
Shin stood by her master as Wren was brought before Thrawn who decided to honor the agreement. When Wren departed, Hati commented that she was on a fool’s errand, to which Thrawn agreed. Thrawn then ordered Skoll and Hati to follow, much to the latter's confusion. He explained to Hati that while he will allow Sabine to reunite with Bridger, he expected the two Dark Jedi to kill them both soon after. Hati was dismayed that he had decided to go back on his word to Wren.
Hati and Skoll departed on howlers and started following Wren. As Skoll and Hati track down Wren, they discovered the remains of the battle between Wren and the bandits, deducing that Wren was still alive. Hati asks her master if he knows the one Wren seeks so desperately; Skoll answered that he does not, as Bridger was trained as a Bokken Jedi in the wild after the fall of the Jedi Temple. Hati likened herself to a Bokken Jedi, but Skoll countered, saying that he had trained her to be something more. Hati asks if Skoll missed the Order; Skoll states that he missed the idea of the Order, but not the truth or weakness of it, claiming there was no future there.
When Hati wonders if her master saw a future on Peridea, which she regarded as a wasteland, Skoll states that the planet once held the Witch Kingdom of the Dathmiri, as confirmed by the presence of the Great Mothers. Hati fears that there may be a good reason the Nightsisters wanted to leave Peridea, but Skoll reveals that he felt something stirring there, calling to him. At that moment, bandits approach the two, but Skoll discourages violence, stating that the enemy of one's enemy is one's friend.
Skoll and Hati eventually found Wren and Bridger traveling across the planet with their crew of Noti. The rebel duo soon noticed the mercenaries, prompting them to stop in their tracks, and swiftly turn around. Baylan then told Shin to contact Thrawn, kill Wren and Bridger, and to take her place in the coming Empire. Confused, Hati asked if he had any intention of helping, which Skoll responded to by stating that with Hati's ambition guiding her one way, he believed that their paths lay in different directions.
After a few moments of silence, Hati then contacted the Empire, informing them of the location of the Rebels, and sending coordinates. Following this, Skoll offered one final lesson: that impatience for victory would guarantee defeat. As the other bandits continued past them, the master and apprentice looked each other in the eye. Hati gave a small nod to Skoll, which was soon returned by Baylan.
Hati let the bandits attack the group first with their blasters and staffs, as the Noti had only slingshots for weapons, relying on their armored pods for protection. Consequently, they were not able to mount a strong resistance against the attack. At Bridger's command, the caravans encircle the stranded vehicle and stop, forming a ring. He tells the Noti to take shelter while he handles the bandits.
While Skoll watches from a distance, Bridger sights Hati approaching with the bandit leader on howlers. When Bridger asks who is the human woman, Wren explained that she is another Force-user and lightsaber duelist but without his sense of humor. As they killed the last of the bandits, Hati snuck up on Bridger from behind and attempted to decapitate him, but he was able to duck out of the way.
Bridger dodges her strike but she manages to singe some locks of his hair. Bridger tells her it was close before engaging her in physical combat. He and Hati then fought, with Bridger using his speed and telekinesis to evade her lightsaber strikes. Sabine then joins Bridger's fight with Hati, who was now outnumbered. Bridger warned Hati that it now seemed the outcome would be bad for her.
Sabine tells Bridger to take her down but Shin however manages to use the Force to hurl Bridger against a caravan, after which Wren and Hati continued to duel. As they fought, Shin gained the advantage and threw Wren to the floor, but before she was able to strike her with her lightsaber, Bridger, using the Force, pulled Wren out of the way. As Wren tumbled to the ground, she used her flamethrower on Hati, but she was able to deflect it with the Force to prevent herself from being harmed.
Night Troopers encircle Bridger and Wren who offers diplomacy but Shin orders the Imperials to destroy the fugitives. With Wren and Bridger outnumbered and outgunned, Hati ordered the Night Troopers to kill them. Before they can, Tano rides into the convoy on Skoll's howler. She rescued Bridger and Wren, Force-pushing several of the troopers out of the way. A skirmish ensues and Hati lunged at Tano with her lightsaber, but Tano blocked the attack with her hands, and Force-pushed Shin away.
As the Night Troopers retreated, boarding their gunships, Hati realized Thrawn was leaving her behind. Tano, Wren, and Bridger now had a decided advantage of numbers, and Hati realized she couldn't win the fight alone. Tano appeals to Hati, asking her to surrender her weapon, saying that she could help her, and tried reaching out to her.
Shin gives a tense and pained look before fleeing away on her howler. Wren made to give chase, but was stopped by Ahsoka. Hati, mounting her howler, fled alone, abandoned in turn by her master, Thrawn, and Morgan. Sometime later, Hati approached a camp belonging to the remaining Bandits of Peridea. After approaching, she raised her lightsaber horizontally over her head and activated the blade, drawing their attention and became their leader.
Powers and Abilities
- The Force: Hati was trained in the Jedi Arts by former Jedi Knight Baylan Skoll. Despite not being a Jedi herself, Hati could utilize telekinesis and Force push. Unlike most dark siders, both Hati and her master wielded orange-bladed lightsabers as opposed to red.
- Lightsaber Combat: Shin Hati is one of the deadliest lightsaber duelists, swiftly killing most of the entire security team to rescue Morgan Elsbeth and besting Sabine in combat, despite the latter's training as a Mandalorian.

Trivia
- Though unconfirmed, much like how her master Baylan Skoll is speculated to have been inspired by the Star Wars Legends character Joruus C'baoth, it's possible that Shin Hati was partly inspired by Luuke Skywalker, a mad clone of Luke Skywalker who served as C'baoth's right-hand and apprentice during the events of Timothy Zahn's books The Thrawn Trilogy.
- A popular theory by fans is Baylan's and Shin's orange lightsabers are powered by Kohlen crystals. These crystals first appered in the Master & Apprentice novel where they are used to make energy shields that are immune to kyber crystal weapons like a lightsaber. Obi-Wan discovered that replacing his kyber crystal with a kohlen crystal creates an orange blade that can break through kohlen-enhance energy shields. Since Baylon has a green crystal on his belt and Shin's crystal in her braid fans assume that both the belt crystal and braid crystal were kyber crystals. This would make since as Shin stab Sabine in their first fight and injured her, even though many people like Qui-Gon Jinn had died almost immediately. Also Obi-Wan discovered that Kohlen crystals can injure a person the same way a kyber crystal can.
- Shin's lightsaber model is likely a lightfoil, a lightsaber that has a slim hilt and narrow blade. Lightfoills appears almost similar to shotos, but there are some key differences; shotos are typically used as a secondary blade in a pair, but but the lightfoil is used alone. It's designed for fencing, which explains Shin's lightsaber form; she depends on swift, quick strikes and moved at speed.
- Shin Hati's name may be a reference to Hati Hróðvitnisson, a wolf from the Norse mythology who chases after the Moon while her fellow wolf Sköll (a different pronunciation for the last name of Shin's master) chases the Sun.
