Hyunjin (현진 hyeonjin) was born on March 20, 2000 (age 25) in Seoul, South Korea. He is a dancer, rapper and visual[2] of the group Stray Kids.[3]

Predebut

While he was on a shopping trip with his mother in middle school, Hyunjin was scouted by JYP Entertainment to become a trainee. He then joined the company sometime in 2016, making him the fourth member to join the future lineup. Since he joined without any skill, he trained hard for two years.[4] He got interested in dancing by watching the senior trainees perform on stage, and practiced by studying various types of dance at the School of Performing Arts (SOPA).[5]

He was officially revealed by the company on October 12, 2017 for his participation in the upcoming survival show Stray Kids.[6] and was introduced with the roles "Rap" and "Dance" on the show. On the final episode of the show on December 19, it was confirmed that Hyunjin would debut with the boy group Stray Kids.

2018-present: Stray Kids

On March 26, 2018, Hyunjin debuted with the mini album I am NOT as the main dancer and sub rapper of Stray Kids.[7]

On February 16, 2019, he became a fixed MC on Show! Music Core.[8]

In December 2019, he joined KBS's project group BBANGBBANGZ with Yoon Sanha, Choi Bomin and Lee Daehwi.

On May 9, 2020, he released a dance video with an original choreography on the song "when the party's over" by Billie Eillish, as part of the SKZ-PLAYER series.

On December 21, 2020, he released the self composed song "miss you" as part of the SKZ-PLAYER series.

In February 2021, he went on a hiatus following school bullying allegations. He didn't participate in any activities during this period, including Mnet's competition show Kingdom: Legendary War. He resumed activities on June 26, 2021, with his appearance in the music video for the digital single Mixtape : OH.

In October 2021, he was selected as STUDIO CHOOM's "Artist Of The Month", with a special dance performance on "Motley Crew" by Post Malone.

On August 13, 2022, he released the self composed song "ice.cream" as part of the SKZ-RECORD series.

On December 21, 2022, Hyunjin participated in writing and composing his original solo song "Love Untold" for the best album SKZ-REPLAY.

On July 20, 2023, it was announced that Hyunjin became a Global Brand Ambassador for Versace.[9][10]

On August 31, 2023, he was featured on a remix single of "Rush" by Troye Sivan.

On December 13, 2024, Hyunjin participated in writing and composing his original solo song "So Good" for Stray Kids' album HOP.

Artistry

Dance

Hyunjin's dancing is known for its theatricality and control over his body movements and facial expressions. He showcases two distinct dancing styles, switching swiftly and seamlessly from a fluid and relaxed style to a jerky and sharp style. He always gives his own flair to the group's choreographies and easily draws attention. As such, he has become a key element for the performance aspect of the group.

Hyunjin is also involved in choreography, especially for his solo dance covers such as "Play With Fire". He also gives his input when it comes to the group's live performances. He participated in arranging the stage for the group version of "Red Lights"[11] and suggested to perform "GET LIT" at 2023 Asian Artist Awards to showcase something new.[12]

Rap

In the line distribution, Hyunjin is mainly in charge of rap-based parts. Even though his voice is usually high, he has a signature lazy, low voice rapping which is showcased on songs like "VENOM", "Muddy Water" and "Chk Chk Boom". He often gets verses and choruses.

Songwriting

“ The emotions in the lyrics I write are something only I know. In some ways, you might feel like I'm twisting my lyrics in a complicated way. I like writing lyrics that leave room for interpretation. I also get the most enjoyment from listening to someone else's music and interpreting it in my own way. So in terms of the 'style' aspect that you mentioned, I think I try to keep the melody easy-listening and the lyrics deep. I don't know how much that will be conveyed, but my songs have to be enjoyable for me to listen to. ”

Since 2021, Hyunjin got into songwriting and works a lot with Bang Chan to make demos, and since 2022, he started releasing solo SKZ-RECORD songs to showcase his own artistry. He likes writing songs about love and crushes.[13]

Visuals

Hyunjin is part of the visual line along Lee Know and Felix. Body wise, he has long legs and good proportions. Face-wise, he is characterized by long horizontal eyes, thick lips, and a sharp jawline, often called "ice prince" or "chic" type of visuals.

Since 2020 he has been showing off trendy looks carried by a signature long hair, notably blonde or black. A large amount of people, including himself, prefering long over short hair. Since then, he rarely ever cuts his hair short.

When he smiles, he looks much rounder and softer, which has given his nickname "Dumpling". Animals he is associated to are the llama, the weasel and the ferret.
