The Grocery Clerk is a man employed at the The Last Chance Superette. He might be Milt, although his identity is unclear.
Count Olaf meets this clerk when he visits the superette with the Baudelaire orphans who were his adopted children at the time. Unbeknownst to the clerk, though, Olaf had parked his locked car on the train track with the trio still inside and was sadistically awaiting the passing of the next train.
Biography
The Grocery Clerk works at The Last Chance Superette. When Count Olaf parks his automobile and his adopted children outside the store, he walks inside to buy some soda. The grocery clerk looks confusedly at the suspicious-looking Count as he drinks his soda and reads the paper, seemingly waiting for something. Unbeknownst to the clerk, the Count was actually waiting for the train to come, as he had parked his car on the train tracks and locked the doors, and was hoping that once the children were killed he would inherit their enormous fortune.
Luckily, the children manage to escape their fate by changing the train's course with a homemade spring, but nobody believes that Olaf tried to murder them.
Behind the scenes
The Grocery Clerk is portrayed by Robert Clendenin in the film adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events. The clerk made no appearance in the original book version of The Bad Beginning, nor was the scene in which he appeared in the book.
