Attrition is a feature in the game that damages and weakens your army. It is represented by a red rectangle next to the troop number to signal the player. Attrition can only be taken by ground units, such as tanks or infantry, and cannot be taken by any unit on water, ship, or aircraft.
How it happens
Attrition occurs when your troops are far from your own cities or attacking nations with cities spread apart. Certain biomes strengthen the effects of attrition on an army. In some cases, attrition cannot be evaded, such as in large, arid or arctic countries with few cities ( Saudi Arabia,
Chad,
Greenland,
Antarctica,
Kazakhstan, and probably the most known country being
Iran). It is essential to note that attrition's effects on tanks are much more pronounced and noticeable, and they are as such more vulnerable during the conquest of these large nations.
How it works
The formula for calculating infantry attrition is:
Where:
- x is the losses per day suffered by your army;
- y is the days already suffered in attrition;
- a is the number of units in said army,
- and b the biome or attack modifier.
The attrition formula tells us that:
20 days in attrition | Approx. lose 20% of your army |
50 days in attrition | Approx. lose 40% of your army |
100 days in attrition | Approx. lose 60% of your army |
200 days in attrition | Approx. lose 85% of your army |
Biome Modifiers
Biomes multiply the losses, this does not account for the reduced speed in biomes:
Jungle modifier : 50% more attrition;
Arid and Mild Winter modifier : 125% more attrition;
Severe Winter modifier: 150% more attrition,
Arctic modifier: 300% more attrition. [1]
How to Avoid Attrition
Certain methods are effective in avoiding or minimizing the damage of attrition, although they depend on the country you are invading:
- Divide your packed-up troops into smaller groups so they individually take less damage from attrition.
- Return to an invaded city or one of your own cities after capturing one to reinforce your troops before capturing another.
- Depending on the country, send your land units on boats, as near the coast of the desired city as possible so the walking distance is lesser.
- Use Transport Aircraft to transport troops over harsh biomes(Note: Be careful of anti aircraft!)
