Sam

Sam was a farm girl from Veldt who befriended Jimmy. She was portrayed by Charlotte Maggi in Rebel Moon.

Biography

A farm girl from a Veldtian farming village, Sam helped with the various farming tasks, such as sowing wheat seeds and carrying water. She lived with her parents until they each abandoned her, after which the town came together to support her. Her father first left for Providence never to return, followed shortly by her mother, who left into the winter wilderness to gather firewood, but likewise, never returned.[3] In her spare time, Sam enjoyed quilting and made quilts for the villagers when they needed them.

Sam and Jimmy riverside

Kora was the first outsider Sam met, whom Sam befriended and worked alongside. Sam confided in Kora that she didn't believe she'd find a romantic partner from the village, instead feeling that he'd come from the stars as Kora did. During the invasion of Veldt, Sam made a daisy chain for JC-1435, which unlocked something in his mechanical mind. Later that evening, Marcus, one of the invading soldiers, called her over to the granary where they were staying under the pretense of requiring water. He and his comrades grabbed her and dragged her into the granary against her will. Kora heard this and arrived to help, revealing incredible combat capabilities Sam and the soldiers never would have expected. One of the soldiers, Private Aris, also stood up for Sam but was easily disabled by the other men. Kora managed to take down most of the soldiers, while Aris used her distraction to free himself and fight back, as well. In the end, it came down to Faunus using Sam as a human shield with only Kora and Aris before him. JC-1435 arrived and Faunus commanded him to kill the two opponents, but instead, JC chose his own path and fired a slag into Faunus' head. JC ran off, but Sam was saved.[4]

Veldt dislodges the dropship

Sam joined the group that ventured out to recover the crashed royal dropship and was happy to spend the time with the newcomer, Aris, who was receiving the Imperium's transmissions on behalf of his fallen unit, however, who was never truly one of them. When unable to quickly repair the ship, the group made camp for the night to find that someone had come by and left food for them while they slept and fixed the ship for them. They would later learn that these were the actions of JC-1435, who had taken a watchful position outside of the town for the sake of Aris and Sam, who had each been kind to him.

Sam's banners

When Kora and Gunnar returned with four new warriors to help fight to defend the village, Sam made each of them a ceremonial banner that could be hung in their honor at the edge of the village. Titus' was a mountain, strong and unmoving. Tarak's was a snow elk, untamable yet regal. Nemesis' was a lightning storm, powerful but life-giving. Milius' was a sun, bright and warm. Gunnar's was a heart, the heart and hope of the village. Kora's was a guardian wolf, standing between Veldt and annihilation.

Nemesis v Krypteia

Sam trained with a blunderbuss and stayed in the longhouse during the Battle of Veldt, where she helped protect the children. Using the powerful weapon, she was able to defeat two Krypteian guards while Nemesis kept the others busy. Though Nemesis received a fatal blow from the lead Krypteian, Balbus, no others were lost in the longhouse thanks in part to Sam.[5]

Relationships

Anthony Hopkins as JC-1435

Jimmy was a mechanical heavy lifter for the Imperium that arrived during their invasion of Veldt. Sam made a daisy crown for him, and she reminded him of Princess Issa, who gave him a sense of warmth for the universe. Jimmy saved Sam's life against his superior officer's orders.
