Nemesis was a sword master who was partly mechanical and eventually became a member of the Veldt resistance. She wielded two flaming swords of oracle steel, which were powered by the gauntlets of her ancestors. The swords and gauntlets were ancient artifacts from her home world.
Nemesis was portrayed by Doona Bae in Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver and will also be the protagonist of a comic series written by Gail Simone.[4][5]
Biography
Before she was known as "Nemesis," she was a wife and a mother in the fishing village of Byeol. She and her husband, Min, raised a daughter and two sons in their peaceful village. Min was a fisherman and she carved wooden figurines to sell in the next town. On one such trip to sell her sculptures, the Motherworld attacked her village, leaving no one alive. She came home to find the bodies of her children bobbing in the estuary.[6]
"These swords became my path out of grief."
Nemesis, A Child of Fire

After her children were killed, Nemesis cut her arms off and replaced them with mechanical gauntlets as part of an ancient rite of passage used by the warriors of her home world. The new arms allowed her to wield her molten-metal blades, but also passed down the ways of the sword from those who came before.[7] She used these new weapons and skills to become an assassin and killed sixteen high-ranking members of the Motherworld military along her path toward achieving revenge for her children.

She later inhabited Daggus, which was ruled by the Imperium, who extracted everything useful from the planet while leaving little for its inhabitants. Nemesis was able to navigate the alleys and nooks and crannies, and she protected the exploited miners of that world.[8] It was here that she met the Veldt resistance group that was forming in response to the Imperium's actions in the system and agreed to join their mission. First, she had to save a local child that was taken by a dangerous native to Daggus, the ogumo, Harmada. Nemesis' only option was to kill the grieving mother, but having done so, she was free to join the budding rebellion.

She traveled with the group to continue collecting allies, which led to a battle at an unregistered trade depot over Gondival. She was captured by an ecto-restraints unit, but after being freed by Gunnar, she helped her fellow rebels escape their ecto-restraints. She fought off Hawkshaws and elite Krypteian guards of the Imperium, helping the group secure victory and presumably concluding the defense of Veldt altogether.[9] The group returned to the farming village for payment but were quickly informed of the Imperium's continued intentions to collect the village's wheat.
"There is a difference between justice and revenge."
Nemesis, A Child of Fire

The village came together and rushed to harvest the grain. During this time, Eljun, one of the village kids, sought out Nemesis and attempted to form a type of friendship with her. Though she was closed off, she was moved. When the Battle of Veldt began, Nemesis protected Eljun and the other children and elderly in the longhouse. The scanners of The King's Gaze detected them and they correctly determined that they were the non-combatants, so Admiral Atticus Noble sent his Krypteia to hold them hostage to support the Imperium's negotiations with the village. With support from Aris and Sam, Nemesis nearly single-handedly took down the Krypteia with their oracle steel blades, but the commander, Cadmus, was too much for her and delivered a fatal wound. Eljun jumped in and stabbed Cadmus with a small knife, distracting him long enough for Nemesis to take him down, but it was too late for her. She died at peace, having succeeded in protecting the next generation of Veldt.[10]
