Ragnir

Ragnir[1] is a massive warhammer wielded by Loki as his primary weapon.

Appearance

Ragnir is a warhammer of enormous size, befitting Loki himself, who is around the size of an ancient giant. Ragnir's head is made of a bluish-gray metal, square, and extremely hefty (like an oversized sledgehammer's), with the hammer's handle jutting from the head's center, being comparatively thin, more than long enough to accommodate two hands, and wrapped in white bandages.[2][3][4]

Abilities

Ragnir's Lightning

Ragnir appears to be a fearsome weapon in Loki's hands, as evidenced by Hajrudin's apprehension at seeing a freed Loki grab hold of it.[1] Loki states that Hajrudin is unable to lift Ragnir, which suggests that the hammer is extremely heavy or has some unique characteristic that makes it difficult to wield.[5]

Notably and through unknown means, the hammer allows Loki to summon lightning: by striking a chosen surface with the hammer, he can make thunderclouds immediately form in the skies above and send down large lightning bolts to hit the struck location; the lightning may offer the added advantage of starting large fires wherever it strikes, which is a particularly dangerous prospect on Elbaph, whose weaknesses due to the massive Treasure Tree Adam are lightning and fire.[4] After summoning lightning, the entire hammer becomes cloaked in electricity, zapping anyone who comes near it.[5]

History

Past

Six years ago when Loki was captured by Shanks and brought back to Elbaph,[6] Ragnir remained at the giant's side as he was bound to the Treasure Tree Adam.[3]

Final Saga

Elbaph Arc

When Loki was almost fully freed from his chains by Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro, he immediately moved to pick up Ragnir[1] and, threatening to destroy Elbaph if his last cuff was not undone, consequently struck the Treasure Tree Adam, causing lightning to strike at that location and spawn a fire down in Elbaph's Underworld.[4] Loki's threat was ultimately a bluff however, as he collapsed from his injuries, releasing Ragnir, which was left by his side as he was re-chained and received medical treatment.[7]

Trivia

  • Ragnir is possibly a portmanteau of Rag- from Ragnarök (Old Norse: Ragnarǫk, "Fate/Judgment of the Gods") and -nir from Mjölnir (Old Norse: Mjǫllnir). The former refers to the prophesied end of the world (and "doom" of the gods) in Norse mythology, while the latter is the name of the hammer famously wielded by the Norse god of thunder, Thor.
  • Ragnir, given its name (the kanji meaning "Iron Thunder") and ability to summon lightning, is likely an allusion to Mjölnir, the above-mentioned hammer of Thor. However, unlike Ragnir, Mjölnir is traditionally described not as a two-handed warhammer but as a small sledgehammer with a too-short handle, primarily designed for use as a throwing weapon.
