Personality

During her childhood, Gerd seemed to be an amicable little girl, as she readily talked to Charlotte Linlin despite sometimes being afraid of her. Like Linlin, she loves sweets, particularly semla, which she explained to Linlin with great enthusiasm. She cares about her village, as she immediately reported to Mother Carmel when Linlin was going on a rampage through it.[1]

Gerd is incredibly kindhearted, as she tried to help the relationships between the Sheep's house children and the giants.[3]

By her own accounts, Gerd adores Humans and thinks they are cute; although she is quick to stress that she is nothing like her crewmate Road, whom she greatly dislikes, on that regard. Gerd is comfortable enough around humans to carry them around on her breasts.[5]

Though Gerd was deeply traumatized by Linlin's rampage at Elbaph, she overcame it to become a strong warrior.[3]

Relationships

Hajrudin

Gerd knew Hajrudin since both their childhoods, as she watched him train to be a warrior.[1] Upon growing up, she joined him in order to spiritually revive the Giant Warrior Pirates, and left Buggy's Delivery to integrate their crew into the Straw Hat Grand Fleet instead.[2] The one disagreement she had with him was allowing Road into the crew.[5]

Road

Compared with her other crewmates, Gerd outright states her dislike of Road, considering him to be a "weirdo" and that he was the real "Shame of Elbaph" rather than Loki.[6] Later, she outright attacked him alongside Goldberg as revenge for his mistreatment of the Straw Hats.[5]

Goldberg

Gerd and Goldberg get along well enough, and she appears to trust him enough to share her thoughts with him about Road.[6]

Piper

Piper is Gerd's pet owl. She appears to have trust and faith in it, having decided to investigate Road's house based off of what it told her.[6]

Straw Hats

Upon first meeting the crew, Gerd apologized profusely for Road's treatment of them. Like with most regular-sized people, she considered them all to be cute, and was comfortable showing them around her homeland.[5]

Charlotte Linlin

Gerd came to know Charlotte Linlin since their childhood, and the two seemingly got along amiably. However, at times, Gerd was somewhat afraid of Linlin's uncontrollable strength. Gerd explained the traditions of the Winter Solstice Festival to Linlin, particularly the semla that they would be eating before the twelve days fasting.[7]

However, upon the seventh day of the fasting, their relationship would break down when Linlin's eating disorder for semla caused her to rampage throughout the Elbaph village, engulfing the area in a sea of flames while injuring many giants, including delivering a dishonorable and fatal injury to the elder hero, Jorul, scenes that Gerd watched in utter horror.[8] Decades later, Gerd openly acknowledges that she used to be friends with Linlin, but that Linlin's actions were considered unforgivable by Elbaph.[9]

Abilities and Powers

As a giant, Gerd likely possesses a large amount of physical power. She was an S-Class member of Buggy's Pirate Dispatch Society, being recognized as one of the organization's top money earners.

She has some skill in communicating with animals, as she understands everything Piper tells her.[6]

Medical Expertise

As the doctor of the New Giant Warrior Pirates, she likely has some degree of medical expertise.[2]She is shown to be skilled enough to tend to Loki's life-threatening injuries and give a diagnosis on how long until he fully recovers.

Craftsmanship

Like Road, Gerd is a skilled artisan, able to craft detailed and delicate human-sized clothes despite being a giant.[10]

Weapons

Gerd wields a single-bladed axe.[2] She is strong enough to knock Road unconscious with one hit alongside Goldberg.[5]

History

Past

Sixty-three years ago, Gerd witnessed the arrival of Charlotte Linlin to the Sheep's House, and the two little girls became friends.[1] She often played with Linlin and taught her about Elbaph's traditions.[7] When Linlin went on a rampage due to her craving sickness, Gerd called Mother Carmel to the scene and watched in horror at the destruction Linlin caused.[11] After Linlin fatally injured Jorul, Gerd witnessed Carmel creating Pandora out of the flames started by Linlin.[8]

Giants Salvage Books from Ohara

22 years ago, Gerd, Hajrudin, and Goldberg traveled to Ohara a few months after its destruction and salvaged the books that had been thrown into the lake. Afterward, they transported the books to Elbaph.[12]

During the Timeskip

Many years later, Gerd joined Hajrudin in his goal to revive the Giant Warrior Pirates alongside three other giants and became the crew's doctor. The crew became mercenaries for the pirate dispatch organization, Buggy's Delivery. During the duration of their service, the crew became the five top earners of the organization, as well as earning the rank of S-Class soldiers.[13]

Whole Cake Island Saga

The Stories of the Self-Proclaimed Straw Hat Grand Fleet

Hajrudin pledged his crew's allegiance to the Straw Hat Pirates, and when he returned to Karai Bari Island, the New Giant Warrior Pirates informed Mohji of their resignation from the Pirate Dispatch Organization,[13] before setting out to sea in the Naglfar as members of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Furious at their sudden departure, Buggy added every member of the crew to his organization's deserter list.[2]

Road Attacked By Crewmates

After being informed of the Straw Hat Pirates' kidnapping by Road's pet, Muginn, Gerd and Goldberg made their way to Road's house to intercept them. Gerd was annoyed by having to deal with Road, and decided she would report him to Jarul after finding the Straw Hats.[6] Not long after, Gerd and Goldberg began to chase Road back up the bridge to the rest of Elbaph. At the same time, Goldberg carried the Thousand Sunny with them.[14] While still running down the bridge, Luffy suddenly made a reappearance from the Underworld, to the great surprise of the pair. Gerd adored Luffy and apologized profusely for Road's treatment of him and his crew. The pair then brought Luffy to meet with his crew, but not without knocking out Road beforehand as revenge for his antics. After making introductions, Gerd and Goldberg proceeded back to the village.[5]

Upon arrival at the Western Village, Gerd met the rest of the Straw Hats. While Luffy was being praised as the one to have apparently beaten Big Mom, Gerd commented on the latter's former residence on Elbaph and on her "unspeakable" actions. She later piloted a Svarr to take the Straw Hats down to the Warrior's Spring for a meeting with Jaguar D. Saul.[15]

Luffy Saves New Giant Warrior Pirates

Although she was attending the banquet, Gerd chose to make an early exit in order to treat a couple of injured guards from Aurust Castle, which were brought to her by Road. She quickly deduced that something was up from Road's skittish behavior, and assaulted him to force a confession. After learning that Luffy and Zoro planned to free Loki, Gerd and the rest of her crewmates quickly took a svarr down in an attempt to stop them. However, as svarrs don't function outside of the Elbaph's Sun World, the entire vessel plummeted. Fortunately, they were saved from their deaths at the last moment by Luffy, but were too late to stop he and Zoro, as Zoro had just undone most of Loki's shackles. All watched in horror as Loki rose to his feet, and proceeded to equip his hammer.[16] Loki proceeded to issue a threat to kill everyone in the Sun World, and to make his threat clear, struck Elbaph's Tree Adam using his hammer, causing a fire.[17]

Loki once again issued a demand to be freed, threatening to make the fire worse if his captors didn't follow through. Although Gerd and her crewmates were prepared to give in to his demands, Luffy called Loki's bluff with a simple attack, which easily put the former giant prince down. Zoro mentioned that Loki wasn't far from death, however Luffy was completely against the idea, and begged Hajrudin to save his life. In the end, Gerd tended to Loki's wounds. She gave an official estimation of months before he would be fully healed, and mentioned that his current whereabouts of being exposed in the wild wouldn't help in his recovery.[18] In order to improve the situation a bit, the Zoro, Sanji, and a couple of Gerd's crewmates went on a hunt for supplies, and eventually returned with food and provisions. After the food was ready, Luffy, in his haste, attempted to feed Loki a large piece that was still practically burning, causing the giant further pain. Although Gerd at first objected, she allowed Luffy to continue with his antics, to the point of silently approving of when he burnt Loki with boiling soup.[19]

Trivia

  • She is also the first shown giant doctor.
  • Gerd's adult design could be based on Nami's unused design with a battle axe.
  • Gerd's favorite foods are Hamburg steak and macarons.[3]
