Colon

Colon is the half-human, half-giant son of Scopper Gaban and Ripley.[3][2] He is the self-proclaimed captain of the "Colon Pirates".[4]

Appearance

Colon is a small giant boy. He has messy pink hair, with bangs covering his right eye, freckles, and a round, jutting nose.

Like most giants, Colon dresses in Viking-inspired attire, including a horned scarlet helmet, a small light blue cape, and a white tunic held in place by a belt. He carries around a small sword on his right hip.

Personality

Colon holds admiration for strong pirates, including Shanks,[1] the Giant Warrior Pirates and Luffy.[5] He is known as a delinquent among the other schoolchildren, and appears quite violent compared to their more peaceful upbringing.[3]

Relationships

Ripley

Ripley is Colon's mother, making up the giant half of his heritage. He seems to respect her and value the lessons she teaches him, which include the more traditional warrior culture of Elbaph.[3]

Mato

Colon, like his mother, appears to be friends with Mato, as he often hangs out at her tavern[1] and picks up groceries for Ripley.[5] As a matter of fact, their relationship is similar to that between Luffy and Makino.

Scopper Gaban

Gaban is Colon's father, making up the human half of his heritage. Although no direct interaction between the two has been seen yet, both show that they care a lot about each other. Colon admires his father for being a strong pirate who is not intimidated even by Elbaph's warriors, while Gaban shows disappointment at being unable to hold his son in his arms due to his giant size.

Walrus School Children

According to Colon (and the children themselves), all of the attendees of the Walrus School hate him, likely as a result of his more violent upbringing and lack of attendance at the school.[3] However, despite their low opinion of him, Colon considers the entire class to be his friends.[6]

Straw Hat Pirates

Colon first heard of the Straw Hat Pirates when he was rejected by Shanks to join his crew, as he was told to instead remember the name "Luffy". When he was at the Walrus School a couple of days later, his first interaction with Luffy was to ambush him and hit him with a wooden sword, though he did no damage at all. After that short skirmish, Colon introduced himself and his family to the Straw Hat Pirates and was in awe upon witnessing Luffy's strength.

Later, when the other children of the Walrus School were in danger, Colon ignored the warnings of the Giants not to run into battle and set out alone. There, he reunited with Nami, Usopp, Brook and Jinbe and agreed to take them with him, though he insisted on dubbing them all the "Colon Pirates", with him as the Captain. When Jinbe later saved all the children with sea cloud water, Colon was in awe upon Jinbe's achievement, dubbing it cool and thanking the Straw Hats for saving the children.

Abilities and Powers

As a half-giant, Colon possesses greater strength and size than the average human and extended life expectancy.[1]

Weapons

Colon has a wooden sword that hangs in a sheath on his belt,[5] and he appears to have some skill with it, although the sword was easily broken following a brief attack on Luffy.[3]

History

Final Saga

Egghead Arc

When the Red Hair Pirates visited a tavern on Elbaph, Colon begged Shanks to recruit him as he wanted to follow in his father footsteps but was turned down. He later followed the crew as they set off to fight against the Kid Pirates.[1]

Elbaph Arc

Colon witnessed the Giant Warrior Pirates returning near the coast of Elbaph, and was informed they were arriving somewhere else. After Mato gave him a basket of food, he departed for the Sun World to meet up with the pirates and see Monkey D. Luffy.[5]

Colon Attacks Luffy

Upon reaching the Sun World, he found the Straw Hats and attacked Luffy, but was quickly knocked back. Impressed by the Emperor's strength, he got into an argument with the nearby schoolchildren about being too violent, and was scolded by his mother for causing a scene. He gave her the lingonberries he brought from Mato and explained his hybrid heritage to Luffy.[3] When the group left for the banquet, Colon joined them, and played while the adults drank and ate.[7]

After the village suffered an attack by various MMA, Colon demanded a chance to help fight, but was quickly scolded and told to find a place to hide. Undeterred, Colon began prepping a svarr to use to get around the island, which was spotted by the Straw Hats. Having been told to hide as well, the Straw Hats offered to go with Colon, which excited him greatly. As they took off in the svarr, Colon declared himself the captain of the "Colon Pirates".[4]

Gunko Confronts Straw Hats

While sailing through the Sun World, Colon and his "crew" came across his fellow giant children, who had all began sleepwalking directly toward a fire (that had been started by Loki earlier), on the orders of the God's Knights. Acting quickly, Jinbe used Umigumo Ipponzeoi to throw a large amount of sea cloud water onto the fire, extinguishing it. Colon was amazed by Jinbe's display, and sincerely thanked the Straw Hats for saving his fellow giants. However, his words were cut short as a member of the God's Knights, Gunko, appeared on their svarr.[6]

Colon Restrained By Gunko

Colon's allies quickly deduced that Gunko was one of the human intruders on Elbaph, and in the ensuing conversation, Colon demanded that she free his friends. The Straw Hats attempted a few attacks on Gunko, but all failed to hit or leave any lasting damage. When Gunko mentioned her lack of care about the lives of the children, Colon attacked her in anger, but found himself easily subdued with an arrow. Colon was left hanging in the air as his "crew" were thrown overboard, leaving him alone with his captor.[8]

Trivia

  • Colon appears to parallel Monkey D. Luffy during his childhood, also being a tavern-inhabiting child who admired Shanks and wished to be part of the Red Hair Pirates, yet getting similarly rejected due to his young age.
    • Colon's name could be a goroawase-type numerical pun with ko (5) and ro (6) similar to Luffy's signature number: 56.
  • Colon's design seems to be based on the titular character of the Vicke Viking series of books, which inspired the subsequent Vicky the Viking TV series that Eiichiro Oda has previously admitted to having been a fan of during his childhood.[9]
    • Contrastingly, Vicky was a timid and clever boy in a village of brute warriors, while Colon is a violent kid who is considered a delinquent by his contemporaries who left Elbaph's warrior past behind due to King Harald's reforms.
  • Following the theme of Elbaph giants being named after professional wrestlers, Colon may be named after The Colóns, a tag team consisting of the brothers Carlito and Primo, or their father Carlos Colón.
