Bunga! You don't understand! That snake, his bite is venomous.
Ono on Ushari[src]

Snakes are a species of animal native to the Pride Lands. They feed on hyraxes and are preyed upon by crocodiles and hyenas.

History

Strange cobra wounds Scar

The lion would cure the snake's venom as long as I did what he said...
Scar on the strange cobra[src]

In an attempt to manipulate a young Scar, the strange lion lured him into a trap in which his cobra friend scarred him across the eye and injected him with venom. Though the strange lion attempted to use the antidote as a means of controlling Scar, the young lion instead used the Roar of the Elders to destroy them both.[1]

Ushari hunts Pim

It's using the scent from the snake skin to mask its own smell. That way, snakes won't detect him. Pretty clever!
―Ono on Pim[src]

One day, the Lion Guard rescued a hyrax named Pim from a thorn bush. Once free, Pim began to vigorously rub himself with a snake skin in order to mask his scent. However, Ushari snuck up behind him and ate him. Furious, Bunga freed Pim. Ushari protested that Pim had been his lunch, but Bunga simply rolled him into a ball and tossed him away.[2]

Flood in the Pride Lands

Who wants to crawl in and make sure Ushari and the cobras aren't stuck in the mud?
Kion to the rest of the Lion Guard[src]

After a flood hit the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard resolved to check on Ushari and the cobras. Before they could do so, Ono bid them follow him to Hakuna Matata Falls.[3]

Kupatana

Ushari attended the Kupatana celebration at Mizimu Grove.[4]

Ushari's attack on Bunga

Egyptian cobra! Whatever you do, don't let him bite you.
―Ono on Ushari[src]

While helping a herd of cape buffalo escape a mudslide, Bunga got flung on top of Ushari, who reflexively bit him. Beshte asked Ushari why he would bite Bunga, and he replied that Bunga had landed on his head. After Ushari slithered away, Ono warned Bunga that a cobra's bite was venomous, so the Lion Guard resolved to bring him before Rafiki. However, when they arrived at Rafiki's tree, Rafiki informed them that honey badgers were immune to snake bites.[5]

Scar's resurrection

Ushari: The reason Kion is so successful leading the Lion Guard is because he's getting advice from the greatest lion to rule the Pride Lands: Mufasa!
Janja: *laughs* Mufasa? I think you've been pounced on one too many times, snake.
Janja and Ushari[src]

One day, Ushari overheard Kion and Makini discussing Kion's ability to speak with the spirit of his grandfather, Mufasa. Intrigued, Ushari contemplated how he could use what he had learned against the Lion Guard. Shortly afterwards, while in the Outlands, Ushari got attacked by Janja and his clan. Before the hyenas could eat him, he revealed that Kion had the ability to speak with Mufasa and suggested that they try to convene with Scar. Though suspicious, Janja allowed Ushari to go free so that he could learn more.

Back in the Pride Lands, Ushari convinced Makini to ask Rafiki if there was a way to communicate with an evil Lion of the Past. He then instructed his skink friends to spy on Rafiki and Makini for him, and they reported that the two mandrills had entered the Lair of the Lion Guard. Ushari managed to sneak up on the pair and overheard Rafiki explaining that an evil Lion of the Past could be summoned in fire by using the bakora staff and the Roar of the Elders.

In an attempt to resurrect Scar, Janja's clan lured Kion to the Outlands volcano by kidnapping his sister, Kiara. Janja then spun him into a fury so terrible that he used the Roar of the Elders and caused the volcano to erupt. Afterwards, Janja kicked Makini's bakora staff into the lava, and Scar's spirit arose from the flames.[6]

Ushari recruits Kiburi to Scar's army

You're a smart snake, Ushari. I like how you think.
―Kiburi[src]

One day, Shupavu reported to Scar that the Lion Guard had accidentally awoken Makuu's float from hibernation. Shortly afterwards, she revealed to Scar that Kiburi had called for a mashindano with Makuu. Hoping to take advantage of the event, Scar ordered Ushari to convince Kiburi that he could become the new ruler of the Pride Lands.

That evening, Ushari convinced Kiburi to use the mashindano as a distraction so that his minions could assassinate Simba. Though Kiburi took Ushari's advice, the Lion Guard foiled his plot, and Simba banished him from the Pride Lands. Furious, he confronted Ushari, but the cobra simply led him into the volcano and introduced him to Scar.[7]

Ambush on Beshte

Just listen! Scar always has a plan. Big plans.
―Ushari[src]

One day, Njano reported to Scar, Ushari, and their allies that Beshte was alone and stranded in the Outlands. Though Scar schemed to eliminate Beshte, the hyenas failed to execute his plan, and Ushari informed them that Scar wished to speak with them about their failure.[8]

Assassination attempt on Jasiri

Did you say one hyena defeated all three of you?
―Ushari to Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu[src]

After failing to recruit the jackals because of Jasiri's intervention, Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu reported their failure to Ushari. Disturbed by Jasiri's presence in the Outlands, Scar ordered Janja's clan to eliminate her.[9]

Ushari's alliance with Kenge

Trust me. My friend is not a little lizard. He's very big...and very bad.
―Ushari on Kenge[src]

When Janja's clan failed to steal some tikiti melons from the Pride Landers, Ushari recruited his monitor lizard friend, Kenge, to help them.[10]

Army of Scar's defeat in the volcano

So, it's a snake and a few lizards. Big deal.
―Bunga on Ushari and the skinks[src]

When the Lion Guard attempted to retrieve volcanic ash from the Outlands volcano, the Army of Scar surrounded them, including Ushari. However, Kion defeated them with the Roar of the Elders.[11]

Skirmish with Kinyonga

Stop the intruder!
―Ushari on Kinyonga[src]

One day, Scar, Ushari, and their allies schemed to block up a river near Hakuna Matata Falls. At that moment, Shupavu spotted Kinyonga spying, and Ushari ordered her and her skinks to stop the intruder.[12]

Battle for the Pride Lands

Stop! You can't destroy him!
―Ushari on Scar[src]
Bunga Ushari fall

Over the seasons, the Lion Guard repeatedly thwarted the Army of Scar's attempts to overtake the Pride Lands. One day, Nyata and Nyeusi reported to Ushari that Janja's loyalties were in question, and Ushari expressed his doubts about Janja and their army's plans to Scar. He, in turn, assured Ushari that he was always two steps ahead. Shortly afterwards, Scar revealed to Ushari that he was double-crossing Janja. He proceeded to explain how he had obtained his scar and declared that it was time for Kion to receive his own scar, from Ushari himself.

As a battle broke out between Scar's army and the Pride Landers, the Lion Guard fought their way into the volcano's caldera. While Kion confronted Scar, Ushari snuck up behind him and slashed him across the eye, scarring him and injecting him with venom. Instead of giving in to his anger, Kion summoned the Great Lions of the Past, who destroyed Scar with rain. In vengeance, Ushari lunged at Kion, but Bunga intercepted the attack, sending both him and Ushari plummeting toward the lava. While Ono saved Bunga, Ushari fell to his death.[1]

Kovu's exile

Several snakes helped drive Kovu from the Pride Lands following his exile.[13]

Physical characteristics

Snakes vary in size. While some snakes are quite large and long, others are smaller or more moderate in size.[14] Snake scales can be brown, cream,[13] purple, red, or tan.[14] Some snakes have long, venomous fangs.[5]

Sociocultural characteristics

The venom from Ushari's bite is still inside Kion. If the venom stays inside him too long, he may no longer know the difference between right and wrong.
―Rafiki on snake venom[src]

Snakes shed their skins habitually. They feed on hyraxes.[2] Some snakes, like Egyptian cobras, have venomous bites.[5] Snake venom is known to have strange properties; it can cause the afflicted to suffer wild mood swings and lose the ability to distinguish between right and wrong.[1] Honey badgers are immune to snake bites.[5]
