These skinks give me the creeps!

Skinks are a species of animal native to the Outlands.

History

Shupavu's alliance with Ushari

Can one of your skinks follow Rafiki and Makini for us?
Ushari to Shupavu[src]
2017-08-04-01 24 24

In an attempt to figure out if he could commune with an evil Lion of the Past, Ushari asked Shupavu if one of her skinks could follow Rafiki and Makini. Shupavu remarked that something must be in it for them, and Ushari answered that, if all went well, the Pride Lands might be tipped in their favor. Acquiescing to his request, Shupavu sent her stealthiest skink, Nyeusi, to spy on the mandrills.

Shortly afterwards, Nyeusi spotted Rafiki and Makini entering the Lair of the Lion Guard and reported what he had seen to Shupavu. She, in turn, informed Ushari.[1]

Shupavu and Njano's reports on Makuu's float

Have your skinks keep an eye on the situation. Tell me immediately if anything changes.
Scar to Shupavu[src]

One day, Shupavu and Njano witnessed Kiburi seizing control of Makuu's float behind his back. They reported what they had learned to Scar, and he ordered them to keep monitoring the situation. Later, Shupavu and Njano overheard Kiburi challenging Makuu to a mashindano. They shared this revelation with Scar, who plotted to trick Kiburi into doing his bidding.[2]

Shupavu's group tricks Beshte

Since Beshte already seems to trust you skinks, we can use that to our advantage. I have a plan.
―Scar to Njano[src]

When Beshte got stranded in the Outlands, Shupavu and her underlings began to tail him. Eventually, they revealed their presence and offered to help him find more shade. In the meantime, Njano returned to the volcano and revealed that Beshte was alone and lost in the Outlands. Intrigued, Scar resolved to use Beshte's naïve trust in the skinks to his advantage.

Per Scar's instructions, Njano returned to his fellow skinks and offered to lead Beshte through the caves underneath Rocky Plateau. Together, the skinks lured Beshte into a dead-end, where Janja, Cheezi, and Chungu trapped him by pushing a large boulder into the only exit. Though Beshte fretted over the skinks' safety, they fled, leaving him at the mercy of the hyenas.[3]

Shupavu recruits Hodari

Makuu's not the only crocodile leader around. Perhaps Kiburi would like to meet that gecko.
―Shupavu on Hodari[src]

After witnessing Makuu reject Hodari's request to join his float, Shupavu mused that a gecko who was friends with the Lion Guard could make a useful addition to Kiburi's float. Along with Njano, she convinced Hodari to request permission to join Kiburi's float, and Kiburi reluctantly allowed the gecko to join.[4]

Lion Guard's trip to the volcano

When the Lion Guard journeyed to the Outlands volcano to collect ash, Scar surrounded them with his army, including the skinks. In order to escape, Kion defeated the army with the Roar of the Elders.[5]

Shupavu's attack on Kinyonga

Skinks, with me.
―Shupavu rallies her group to chase Kinyonga[src]

One day, Kinyonga used her camouflage abilities to sneak into the Outlands volcano and spy on Scar and his army. Before long, Shupavu noticed her shadow, and Ushari ordered the skinks to stop her. After an extended chase, the skinks cornered Kinyonga in the Outlands, only for the Lion Guard to sneak up on them through the use of camouflage. At the Guard's sudden appearance, the skinks fled.[6]

Shupavu and Njano's reports on the Hyena Resistance

Skinks, what news do you have?
―Scar to Shupavu and Njano[src]

One day, Shupavu and Njano overheard Kion and Jasiri discussing the Hyena Resistance at Flat Ridge Rock. They promptly reported what they had heard to Scar. Later, they witnessed Jasiri offering Janja a place in the Hyena Resistance and Janja hesitating before refusing her. They noted his hesitation and resolved to inform Scar.[7]

Shupavu and Njano's report on the mudpots

And they're surrounded by dry plants and grass. *chuckles evilly* One spark is all it would take to send the whole place up in flames.
―Shupavu on Kion, Kiara, and their friends[src]

Upon noticing Kion, Kiara, and their friends relaxing at the mudpots, Shupavu and Njano reported what they had seen to Scar. Shupavu suggested that they set the nearby vegetation aflame, and Scar agreed, entrusting the mission to Mzingo and his parliament.[8]

Shupavu and Njano's report on the Pride Landers

One day, Shupavu and Njano noticed the Lion Guard gathering an army of Pride Landers to train against the Outlanders. This news eventually reached Scar.[9]

Shupavu and Njano's report on Queen Dhahabu

You did well to report this, skinks! But the water treaty with the zebras must be put to an end. I want the Pride Lands to stay thirsty.
―Scar to Shupavu and Njano[src]

When Queen Dhahabu arrived in the Pride Lands to discuss a water treaty with Simba, Shupavu and Njano spied on her. They reported what they had learned to Scar, who schemed to ruin the water treaty. He promptly ordered the skinks to summon Reirei's pack to him.[10]

Shupavu and Njano's report on Makini's mpando mpaya

Sounds like something Scar won't want to miss either.
―Shupavu on Makini's mpando mpaya[src]

One day, Shupavu and Njano overheard Makini discussing her upcoming mpando mpaya with the Lion Guard. They reported what they had learned to Scar and explained that the Lion Guard was personally inviting animals from all over the Pride Lands to the event.[11]

Battle for the Pride Lands

Shupavu: Scar, the Pride Landers are winning. The Lion Guard is headed this way.
Scar: Then it's up to you and your skinks to stop them, Shupavu.
—Scar and Shupavu, during the battle for the Pride Lands[src]

Upon overhearing Simba's plan to invade the Outlands, Shupavu and Njano resolved to inform Scar. Later, Shupavu brought Janja to the Outlands volcano for a talk with Scar. Once Janja had left, Scar ordered Shupavu to rally Kiburi, Mzingo, and Reirei so they could destroy the royal family and Janja's clan.

That night, Shupavu led Janja's clan to the Lair of the Lion Guard and ordered them to keep the Lion Guard distracted. After Janja's clan learned of Scar's betrayal, they reformed and joined the Pride Landers. Shupavu witnessed the hyenas' change of allegiance and reported it to Scar. He, in turn, told Shupavu, Njano, and Ushari how he had obtained his scar.

The next morning, the Pride Landers invaded the Outlands. Shupavu informed Scar that the Pride Landers were winning and that the Lion Guard was en route to the volcano. Furious, Scar told Shupavu that it was the skinks' job to stop them, so she rallied her group, and they attacked the Lion Guard. Despite their best efforts, the skinks were easily defeated. Likewise, Scar's spirit was destroyed, and his army was disbanded.[12]

Physical characteristics

Skinks are moderately sized lizards, with oval-shaped heads, slender bodies, and long tails. Their scales can be a variety of colors, including black, blue, green, purple, red, and yellow. Sometimes, their scales are bi-colored, with their legs being a lighter or darker shade than their main body. Most skinks have distinctive markings, such as spots or stripes.[6]

Sociocultural characteristics

Due to their size, skinks are stealthy and make excellent spies.[1] They are often deceptive and sly, and will trick other animals for their own gain.[3] They tend to live in groups. The most prominent group of skinks serves Shupavu in the Outlands.[5]
