Who are you calling a hippo? I'm a rhino, you baboon!
―Mbeya to the baboon leader[src]

Mbeya is a male rhinoceros. He is the leader of a crash of rhinoceroses in the Pride Lands.

When the resurrected spirit of Scar began sending his army to wage war on the Pride Lands, Mbeya joined his fellow Pride Landers in fighting them off and eventually defeating them altogether with an invasion of the Outlands.

Biography

Early life

Mbeya lived in the Pride Lands. At some point in his life, he became the leader of a crash of rhinoceroses.[1]

While searching for Flat Ridge Rock, Beshte got the idea to ask Mbeya for directions. Together, the Lion Guard journeyed to the watering hole, where Beshte talked to Mbeya. Meanwhile, the rest of the Lion Guard waited on the edge of the water. Eventually, the friends grew impatient and insisted that Beshte wrap up his conversation. Realizing that he had forgotten to ask about Flat Ridge Rock, Beshte went back and asked Mbeya for directions. The old rhinoceros pointed Beshte in the right direction.[2]

Kupatana

Ah! Help!
―Mbeya, after getting stuck in a mud pit[src]

Mbeya got stuck in a mud pit and yelled for help. Eventually, the Lion Guard arrived and freed him.[3]

Savannah Summit

I'm not getting off until you apologize, Zazu.
―Mbeya, after he believes Zazu called him "clumsy"[src]

Mbeya was invited by Simba to the Savannah Summit. He and the other leaders gathered at Pride Rock, where Simba announced that Makuu, the untrustworthy crocodile leader, had also been invited. Together, the party proceeded to Mizimu Grove, during which Simba and Zazu stressed the importance of equality and unity.

Later, Mbeya sat on Zazu, which prompted the hornbill to call for help. The Lion Guard followed the noise to where Rafiki was attempting to paint a portrait of Mbeya, who was sitting on Zazu, and the baboon leader. The Lion Guard demanded an explanation, and Mbeya furiously explained that Zazu had called him "clumsy." The baboon leader clarified that it had been him who had called Mbeya clumsy, then accused Mbeya of having bumped into him. Zazu yelled for Mbeya to get off him, and the rhinoceros complied, to Zazu's relief. The baboon leader and Mbeya started to bicker again, but Beshte stepped in-between them and encouraged them to get along with one another. The three then apologized to each other.

That evening, Mbeya and the other animal leaders looked on as Makuu proclaimed his innocence and claimed that he had only attended the Savannah Summit to help his float. Afterward, negotiations were re-engaged.[1]

Traveling Baboon Show

While patrolling the Pride Lands, the Lion Guard noticed several animals taking off in the same direction. They followed the commotion to where a large group of Pride Landers had gathered beneath a tree. Beshte questioned Mbeya about the ruckus, and he explained that the animals had gathered to see a troop of performing baboons. Mbeya then watched as Uroho, Mwevi, and Mwizi put on their show.

Later, when Ma Tembo summoned the Lion Guard to see a tree that had been stripped of its leaves, Mbeya told the Guard that all the grass around the tree was gone as well. The Lion Guard resolved to find the food thieves, and Mbeya departed with the other animals. When the troop put on another show, Ono revealed that Uroho, Mwevi, and Mwizi were the food thieves. However, after the Lion Guard saved the baboons from Janja's clan, the troop returned the stolen food to the Pride Landers, including Mbeya.[4]

One night, Mbeya attended Bunga's Christmas rehearsal. Things went well until the next morning, when everyone was leaning toward abandoning the project. However, right before the animals could depart, Bunga desperately explained the importance of the performance to both himself and Timon, which prompted the Pride Landers to change their minds.

Later that day, Mbeya partook in the "The Twelve Ways of Christmas" performance, during which he climbed into a baobab tree. After the song, Timon lamented that Dandy Claws would never come, but Pumbaa suddenly appeared in costume. He apologized for his lack of gifts, but Timon pointed out that their family and friends were the gifts. The Lion Guard decided to make Christmas an annual holiday in the Pride Lands, and the gathered Pride Landers yelled, "Merry Christmas!" in unison.[5]

Mashindano

Mbeya watched the mashindano between Kiburi and Makuu.[6]

Makini's portrait

Mbeya watched as Makini painted a portrait of the royal family at Pride Rock.[7]

Tsetse fly attack

In the midst of a tsetse fly infestation, the Lion Guard found Mbeya upside-down in a dry ditch. Beshte freed Mbeya, who lamented having rolled into the dry steambed to escape the tsetse flies. The team then escorted him to a watering hole.

Later, the Lion Guard found themselves plagued by tsetse flies. The flies left just as Thurston and his herd appeared, and Ono realized that the flies disliked the zebras' stripes. This gave Kion an idea. Under Kion's orders, the Lion Guard decided to escort Mbeya and the zebras to a new watering hole.[8]

Kumbuka

Mbeya attended Simba's Kumbuka celebration at Pride Rock.[9]

The Lion Guard concluded that the Pride Landers needed to unite against the threat of the Outlanders and resolved to recruit Bupu's herd, Laini's group, Ma Tembo's herd, and Mbeya's crash. Although Mbeya expressed reluctance at the prospect of helping the Lion Guard, Kifaru convinced him to join the fight. At first, the Pride Landers were tense around one another, but Kion worked to defuse the tension and instructed them to race toward Bunga. However, the event soon got out of hand, for the animals tripped over the galagos and ended up in a heap. Kion then got the idea to call Makuu for help. Makuu begrudgingly agreed to assist the Lion Guard, but his training proved to be too rigorous and ruthless for the other Pride Landers to master.

Shortly after Makuu quit the training sessions, the Army of Scar besieged his float. Ono witnessed the battle and reported his findings to Kion. Together, the Lion Guard and their Pride Lander allies stormed the watering hole and fought off the Army of Scar. After the fight, Makuu thanked Mbeya and his crash for the help and vowed to do the same for them should the need ever arise.[10]

Dhahabu's visit

Mbeya watched as Dhahabu announced her water treaty with Simba.[11]

Along with the other Pride Landers, Mbeya trained at Pride Rock for the upcoming battle with Scar's army. That night, he witnessed Scar's spirit appearing in the flames of Pride Rock. After Scar disappeared, the Pride Landers grew concered about their chances against him. However, Janja informed the Pride Landers that Scar could be defeated, and Simba readied an invasion force for the following morning.

The next morning, Mbeya and his crash joined the other Pride Landers in invading the Outlands. During the battle, Cheezi and Chungu challenged Mbeya and his crash, which confused them. Janja then reminded the two that they were on the Pride Landers' side. The battle continued, and the Pride Landers achieved victory.[12]

Lion Guard's trip to the Tree of Life

Mbeya and his crash arrived at Pride Rock to say farewell to the Lion Guard, who were departing for the Tree of Life. Mwenzi got the rhinoceroses' attention as the Guard passed them by.[12]

Battle of the Lion Guards

When Anga returned to the Pride Lands, she took a flight around the kingdom, during which she flew past Mbeya. Later, Mbeya watched the Battle of the Lion Guards, including Beshte's, Fuli's, and Anga's individual challenges. He witnessed the mashindano between Kion and Vitani, and reacted with awe when Askari appeared in the sky and when Kion used the Roar of the Elders to lift Pride Rock.[13]

Physical appearance

Mbeya is a large rhinoceros. He has blue-gray skin, with a dark underbelly and spots on his face and hide. He has two gray horns on his snout as well as small black eyes.[2]

Personality and traits

He knows the Pride Lands like the back of his horn!
―Beshte on Mbeya[src]

Mbeya is quite familiar with the composition of the Pride Lands, which Beshte complimented him on.[2] He is conversational and friendly but can be sensitive.[1] Ultimately, he is brave and will fight alongside his fellow Pride Landers to keep his homeland safe.[12]
